1. lalantex: I have some questions for you: 1. Have you showed your dogs? 2. Have you done any health checks on them? 3. Have you got a kennel name or are you just having a couple litters because it's fun? 4. Why do you want to have a litter? (I mean what's your reason for making a litter?) 5. Have you studied their pedigrees more then three generations back (I'm trying to find a male for my Bella and I look 8 generations back on every possible mate.)? 6. Have you had any enquieries about pups? 7. Have you had all the required shots and dewormings done? 8. Have you talked to your vet asking about these things? 9. Have you done research on genetics and breeding (ie. Do you know what progresive and resessive or heterozygot and homozygot mean when talking about genes?)? 10. Have you researched the bloodlines? 11. Why do you want to use THIS male? (pro's and con's) 12. How often have you bred your bitch (how much time has it ellapsed from each the first birth to the second breeding and from the second birth to this one?)? I have a million questions that need anwsering for myself before I do even one litter. But it seems to me that you have just a male and a female and you've just decided to make a litter. Mabye you did that decition because you think it brings money on the table or mabye you did it because you wanted to show your kids the miracle of life. Or mabye you just want to care for puppies. Don't understand my post as a very negative one. My goal is to make you think. I know I'm young (19 at the end of this month) but I've thought about this for two years now and counting. I looked for a bitch from a bloodline that I like and got Bella. Now I'm looking for a bloodline to match hers for the male. I'm not going to just buy a male - I'm ready to travel several houndred kilometers to breed her with a good male. But not before she has got her health checks and allso before she's been to more shows. She's been in only one so far and that's not good enough for me yet. Before you decide to have a litter - you have to think. Will this breeding benifit the breed? You can't just think about THIS litter - you have to think about the fact that if the puppies owners want to breed with a puppy from your litter. So you have to think further. I hope this helped.
2. Cairn6: ROFL! Haha! You've got such a silly dog!! :D
3. Gina: Haha! :D I wish I had that problem! I wish I had a POOL! :o
4. Thanks! It's great to be back! :D
5. A dog with hair on his body but not on his head?! :o This is the first time I've heard of something like that. Are you sure the head wasn't shaved? Was it a puppy or an adult? American Hairless Terriers have hair when they are born but they shed the hair before 8 weeks when they are completely 100% hairless. They usually have a dark face and a light spotty back. It would help if you could show the pic but... Did it have short or long hair? Was it a big or small dog? Long or short nose? It might be a Chinese Crested who's face has been shaved or any of the other hairless dogs... Mexican Hairless, Peruvian Hairless, American Hairless Terrier... These are my two: Ben: ...and Bella: And it depends on the camera angle on how good they look on photos... ;-) Example 1: Example 2:
6. Kat: I know! :D Unfortunately Ben can't swim that good. He drops his hind legs to the bottom and if he can only barely touch the bottom he starts panicking and splashing around while screaming. So I have to hold him in my arms everytime I swim with him. Then he calms down and just floats on the water. Bella on the other hand... she swims great! I don't know why Ben doesn't... :-?
7. kendalyn: Oh, I didn't mean in that way. I ment that I will not BUY more dogs then I can care for. You know - several diffirent dogs from several diffirent breeders + my own pups. Ofcourse I will keep the pups as long untill I can find good homes for them or if they are returned. If you only browse through several breedes homepages you can see that many have +10-20 dogs plus their puppies (perhaps 2-3 litters at the same time). I ment that I will not do this, because how can I assure that every dog and pup gets all the attention and care that they desurve? That's why I've decided to only have a couple dogs and a maximum of 1-2 litters/year (by diffirent bitches ofcourse in the future - not immediately when I only have Bella). I hope this cleared things up.
8.
How cute! One word of advice when swimming with your dogs though, is to keep away from the paws! It hurts to get kicked by mistake.. :o
I KNOW! I learnt that the hard way last year! :-? Ouch!
9.
Crested!! Congrats on becoming a breeder and getting your kennel name.. it does not sound like you are a BYB to me, you are goign to the classes, getting a kennel name, having the proper checks done on the dogs and i'm sure you'll get htem all health tested when they are pups as well.. Congrats ;)
Thanks! :D I'm going to check both Ben's and Bella's knees and eyes (with Chinese Cresteds over here - no tests are nessecary and many think they are no good, but I still want to check both). Ben's especially for one reason - to know what to expect in the future. I will allso not use a dog as stud that hasn't had his eyes and knees examined. Plus that he has to be healthy otherwise. I allso want that he's gone to a few shows atleast so I know what diffirent professional people think of him (doing the same with Bella). The stud dog has to allso have good personality and look good in my eyes. I've got a couple that I'm interested in, but nothings sure yet. I want to wait and see what Bella's tests show first. There aren't many tests done on pups here either. But I'll do my best... It might require me to go several houndred km's but that will be worth it. I have even one more thing that I will not do. I will not take more dogs then I can care for. At this point I think I could mabye take one more but that's it. I can't take like 10 dogs that I can't take care of the proper way.
10.
:Just keep swimming, just keep swimming! :D
I'll try! :D Btw... I love your dog's name!
Will she teach Rosie how to swim, she'll only paddle. And, welcome back you've been away far too long. :buzi:
Umm.. If she could teach Ben not to panic when he gets into the water first... ;-) aww... thanks, mum! I know it's been a long time, but atleast you're up to date on why that is. ;-)
sounds like a great time!!! we need pictures!!! and i agree with MArion WB!! you've been gone WAY to long!!
I hate the fact that I left my camera at home. I was thinking of taking it with me but then I decided not to. Dumb me! :wallbash: Yeah... it's been a while... but I never left you for good! I've been here several times checking out what's happening. I just haven't posted. But... you can't get rid of me! :evilbat:
11. I went swimming today with Ben and Bella. Ben HATES it so he just went in and came back up again. ...but this story is about Bella's FIRST SWIM IN HER LIFE! :D The water was kind of dirty and this green stuff was all over the top. Bella was standing on a rock and I guess she thought it was a carpet or something. So she jumped right on top of it and went under water. She was kind of startled of what the (bleep) that is but did another dive. (same result) So she thought that the green stuff on the other side of the rock would be safer. Again - splash!! It was hilarious to watch... The best thing was - she thought it was fun. I went to swim a bit further away and she stayed on the rock with her tail wagging and barking at me. Hmm... I wonder if I could go swimming again tomorrow... ;-)
12. Ok... Can I give my oppinion? I'm having (hopefully if everything goes ok) my first litter next summer after Bella's eye- and knee examination. My breeder name application is pending in the Finnish Kennel Club and I've gone the first breeder course (and planning on going to the second one too when the course comes closer then 120km that I had to travel for the last one). I personally wouldn't classify any pup as show dog and pet dog. I think it's really weird that some people do. I'm going to breed Chinese Cresteds and they have some teeth problems (the genes for teeth are combined with the hairless gene so usually the more hairless the dog is - the less teeth it has (this is very, very, very simplified!!!).) And some Cresties might have perfect teeth as a puppy but they turn into something really weird when they have changed into the adult teeth. So in my eyes it's just luck if a show quality pup actually becomes show quality as an adult. I think breeders classify pups on the way they look at that moment. They can't say for sure that the pup will actually be show quality as an adult. This is exacly the reason why I will not breed dogs for show only. I will try and make show quality pups ofcourse but I will not start putting labels on dogs unless they have some fault at birth that makes it impossible for them to go on shows (blue eye, overbite...). I would be thrilled if the owners of the pups would go on shows but that is not a must. I know so many people who have bought a show dog (puppy) that has never lived up to those expectations. So they have either abandoned him/her or given him/her back to the breeder. And now the dog is facing yet another home. So what I've been thinking is that I'm going to do my best to make show quality dogs but I'm not sure if I will sell a pup to a home where he/she wouldn't be accepted if as an adult he/she would have a fault. And I'm not thinking of me on this one or my wallet. I'm thinking of the pup. But I guess I will be labeld as a BYB. :-?
13. Courtnek: That's exacly how I feel!
14. StarFox: No... Never. Just had a "kind of" strange times lately. Had a lot to think about so all discussion forums have had to go on ice for me.
15.
My question is why wasn't a 2 week old baby in a play pen or a crib?
This is what my first thought was. If the baby would be in a crib - how would the dog be able to get it then? Laying on the bed suggests that the baby was left alone on the parents bed unatended! That already suggests to me that something is seriously wrong with this family. Then the dog comes and "mauls" the baby! I'm with K on this one! BUT... if the baby would have been in her crib (her own bed) the dog couldn't have picked her up and dragged her to the kitchen. I never like the fact that authorities take away kids from their families but I really think this thing needs more investigating then wondering about if the dog is a wold hybrid or not and if it should be put down or not.
16.

ARE HAIRLESS DOGS UGLY?!
if their german shepards, then YES!! but i know which breed you mean, the Chineese Crested. Yes its ugly and thank you for reminding me of that breed.
 HAHAHAHAHA!!  Sorry... Well it must be pretty weird how you think of only Chinese Cresteds when you hear the word: HAIRLESS... The truth is that there are other hairless dogs such as Peruvian Inca Orchid (Perro Sin Pelo Del Peru), Mexican Hairless Dogs (Xoloizcuintli) and American Hairless Terriers... Then when we go outside dogs there are hairless cats (Sphynx) and hairless mice... rats... even hairless guinea pigs!! With all these hairless creatures you have to wonder that if people have allowed these gene mutations to grow... Do THEY think they are beautifull?? ABSOLUTELY!! I love hairless creatures!! (allthough allso hairy creatures. ;-)) I wouldn't change them for anything. Yup, my first thought when I saw one was UGLY, but... It took me a week and I thought that the dogs looked absolutely gorgeous!! As for German SHEPHERDS (see, I'm learning too.), Pitt Bulls and all of the above that you named Rabid... I honistly think they are beautifull too! ESPECIALLY after seeing a Bullmastiff pup at the dogschool. Adorable and cuteness overload! Everyone's got their own opinion and are entitled to it, but that doesn't mean that you need to go saying "that's ugly, that's yucky..." because it just causes people to feel bad or even get really angry and offensive. Would you go up to a wrestler (let's say... umm.. Big Show from WWE) and tell him you think he looks like a girl? I DON'T THINK SO!! So as an advice... TREAT EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING AS BIG SHOW AND I BET PEOPLE WILL LOVE YOU! ;-) And as for the troll thing... I agree with K. Many of us have seen trolls way too many times! How about the crating thread? ;-) This is even more stupid then that one. An obvious troll!! Oh, and Rabid... even though I know you're a troll... Here's something for you to think about... I love hairless dogs and have even applied for a kennel name so I can start breeding them. I think they are the most beautifull dogs in the world and I honistly don't care what you think! Nothing you say can make me change my mind and I know all of the people here think the same about their breeds SO WHY EVEN TRY?? It's fine for you to think that way but this whole thread is totally unneccecary and useless. Sorry if I hurt you, but THAT'S WHAT I THINK!
17. Thank you guys!! :D Bella hasn't started nesting yet... just big "dogboobies". ;-) I've been thinking that if it turns out that Bella gets this every heat I'm going to spay her. If it's just a "one time thing" then I won't... atleast not yet. I'm planning on spaying her after the age of about 5+ depending on her health... The reason for that is that when she's in my eyes too old for breeding I don't have to worry about her getting unwanted puppies at old age...
18. Oh, brother! Rabid: You still didn't anwser my question... ARE HAIRLESS DOGS UGLY?!
19. kendalyn: Haha! :D Exacly!! Oh, and Ben and Bella have something else they want to say... ;-)
20. Soooo... The question everyone wants to know is... Are hairless dosg ugly?? As you "kindly" forgot to mention them. ;-)
21. I put a thread on the 'care' forum earlier asking if it's normal for a dog to have big "boobs" and got a very good anwser... false pregnancy. I asked about it of Bella's breeder and she told me that Bella's mom had false pregnancies after every heat. (she's now spayed) Could you tell me more about the whole false pregnancy thing? Does the dog experience labour? How long does she care for the "puppies"? Is there any way to easier get through it? Are there any long term problems with it if Bella starts having false pregnancies after every heat? Anything and everything is helpfull... I have no clue about false pregnancies so all help is very, very welcome!
22. I've been trying to feel her tummy to see if I feel any "lumps" etc. (puppies) but I can't feel anything there... :-? I was a little afraid of falce pregnancy... I have no experience on this what so ever so I guess I have to keep a very close eye on her.
23. I thought I'd ask... Bella's first heat started 5:th of April and they ended about 4 weeks afterwards. Now I've seen that her "boobs" have just been growing and growing. Should I be concerned? I was very clear with my parents that during Bella's heat she was not allowed to run around off leash and was to be kept away from other dogs. And I was even more clear about the fact that she was not to be left without supervision for a SECOND when she was outside. I didn't want any unwanted puppies and especially not from her first heat. I talked to my parents and they both said that they saw to it that no other dog got near her during this time... So why are her boobs still this big and still growing? Is it normal? Should I be concerned? She's totally herself - happy, jumping, energic... But still I'm worried. Here's a pic so you get the idea of what I'm talking about. (I lifted her front paws up so she's standing on her hind legs (she loves it)).
