  1. Well, I've read a lot from the library in Texas when I was there, and I know all about training, it's just that there are so many different methods and I just wanted everyone's opinion on it, and maybe there's something i haven't read about that one of you guys know.I just had a 10 mintue training session with DUck.It was just going over all the stuff I had taught her already.Yes, she's pretty young, but she learns pretty fast.Once she gets the point what I want her to do, she does it.She learned sit, stay, come, and beg the first time I showed her, but down took a little longer cuz she doesn't usually lie down.
  2. Thanks, just wanted to ask another Q.Does the quick ina dog's nail grow if the nail isn't cut too often? And should I cut the hair around her nails so it won't cover it up when I'm cutting? If I had to, I'd take her to a professional groomer's place for the hair-cutting thing.
  3. Well, I already went to see the only obdedience place here, and I'm never going to take her there. They used negative training, with discipline more than rewards. She'll do better here than with those people
  4. Rotts:Read my story in the IN MEMORY post and you'll know how good a Rottie is if he is trained well, even if he lives outside.I used to have this concept that any dogs living outside would be aggressive.Wrong thought.Sorry for those people that have dogs outside.Didn't mean to be contradictive.
  5. Oh, I forgot to answer you Q.About kids and other dogs.If the dog(Akita) was raised with a kid in the family, he should be alright around them(gentle kids though.)Remember, these dogs were used in Japan to guard the children whenever they weren't home.About other dogs, I think they just need to be socialised(not sure though).
  6. Well, I guess nobody except me knows Akitas. You guys are mostly pit people, and im an akita-something else-something else person.I've had an Akita before, her name was Mocha.Okay.The thing is, if you want a dog that will stick to you all your life and act uncaring(not aggresive) around non-family people, AND you have experience owning a dog, you should get an Akita. But they take more time to train then Labs, but Labs are friendly to all people. Most Akitas you get from shelters(if they had a loving family before) will take a long time to think you are family. They stick with the same people all their lives. They take more time to train because most are very stubborn, and like getting their own way.And if they aren't trained right, they can be very aggresive(well, that doesn't mean other dogs shouldn't be trained). That's for the experienced part. That's all I'm gonna put for now, if you have any more questions, I'll try to answer. :)
  7. Ok, sorry I didn'y answer all your posts, I was sleeping. It's 9 AM now.Well, DUck is 3 months old.She knows sit, down, beg(two feet on the sloor in sitting position with fron feet up),jump(thats like agility, jumping over a little bar), and stay, but those only work when nobody else is around. The thing that works SOMETIMES is come.If there's somethin REALLY interesting, or food, she won't come. But if there's lots of people she doesn't care about in one room, and I'm in the another room, I say come, and she hears my voice and runs into the room I'm in. :) I just hope she does it everytime.Maybe I shouldn't try weaning her off treats anymore.I tell her to come and she somes and sits right in front of me and gets praise. But she likes food better  .Somebody suggested using pennies in a can, and I tried it, but she only acts good if she sees it.Then she starts biting and grabbing treats from my hand(it HURTS!!).I'm gonna take her out now for a long walk, then review all her little sit and come stuff.I know those don't count as tricks, but thats all she knows and the people her think they are.To me, it's just a basic thing most dogs should know.I hope some of you are still on.I want to talk!!
  8. I'm going to start teaching Duck to do everything after I take her for a super long walk tommorrow. It would be much easier. She's not so big that she walks in front of me yet, but when she is, it will be hard.So how do I train her to heel?
  9. Well, a puppy mill is a place where dogs are bred only for money, without thought for the dogs healthand wellbeing. They are mostly produced in big amounts and have many litters a year, unlike reputable breeders, who only have 1 or 2 litters a year. Most puppies in pet shops are from puppy mills.Puppies from mills are mostly not very healthy, have many behavioral problems, and are bad reprasentatives for the breeds. Some sell at higher prices than breeders, which is a whole big ripoff. The main bad thing is the number of unhealthy puppies they produce to add to the population of dogs without homes.
  10. There's gonna be a local dog trick show here.I think it's AMAZING they actually have that stuff here.My dad says we can bring Duck, and I think she'll do really well if she doesn't pay attention to all the other dogs. She listens to me when there's only me, but when more people are around, she's too busy jumping on them.I need to train her a bit more these days. The contest is on Sunday, November 2.The last contest's winner was a dog who knew sit, shake hands, and beg.ONLY.Duck knows more, but I need to be positive that she'll listen to me.Then if people ask me questions, I'll tell them about all the mehtods I used(like the ones you guys use), and then they'll do it, and I'll tell them about breeding and all that stuff!!The main thing I wanna do is make Duck well-behaved so the people will think of her as an example of a dog trained by positive methods.Think of how much that would help all these issues about breeding and training!!So can you guys please give me all the tips you can give about training?STuff like how to train a dog to act calm around A LOT of people, and listen to me when there's so much commotion and other dogs as well.If Duck messes everything up, she'll be known for the result of positive training!!And I need for her to know she can't bite and jump on other people. And do you guys think there is enough time between now and then for me to train her to be REALLY super well behaved? She needs to be EXCEPTIONAL!!Please help!!!!Put ANY tips you know, or any problems and/or solutions you have been through with your dog, experiences..etc...only about 3 weeks away..
  11. Well, I only read the first page cuz I'm too lazy, and something like that happened to me before, and I am only 13.My mom wouldn't let my Akita inside the house, cuz she said the couch would have hair all over it and the floor would be dirty...well, I told her that Mocha was dirty cuz shw as outside...and that if I gave her a bath and kept her inside, she would be nice anc clean all the time...it worked..partly.My mom wouldn't let her go upstairs, probably cuz my brother is scared of ALL dogs and doesn't like them.....It's very weird how my parents don't like dogs at all(well, my dad does a little, but he thinks of them as a personal police thingy or something..he used to have a Boxer and he trained him to be nice to him, but Oh, I have to go now...sorry...ill continue next time..I REALLy have to go..
  12. Well, rowie-the-pooh. just thought I would remind you that aroura had a time scheduled for spaying Lily already, but then she came in heat...hehe  you probably forgot
  13. Yeah...way different..thanks..
  14. Well, I'd have to translate the whole thing, and it takes me a minute to type one Chinese word...狗..that's dog.And I'm not a good translator anyways...the thing would turn out all wrong and maybe even give a misconception...I posted that on everywhere I go that has a forum...If there was a Chinese version....wouldn't that be SOO much better..I'm willing to translate though...for the good of all dogs...
  15. Well, I've never seen any in the dog products catalogs I ask for, so do they sell those at Petsmart or Petco?
  16. I'm going to send it to all my friends!!It's soo sad...they'll talk to lots of people and lots of others and then lots more..hope it helps
  17. OMG!Did you just pick up your puppy from some person selling off the streets? And if you prepared yourself well for getting a puppy, I think you should know the basics about dogs..Or maybe you just found a cute little dog from the pet shop window and thought you just COULDN'T resist? And are you sure it's a staffy if even the gender isn't sure?
  18. The standing on the leash thing didn't work for Duck, cuz she chews on the leash whenever it's on(unless we're in a VERY INTERESTING place).Oh yeah, any idea how to stop leash chewing? The thing I do is what Connie suggested:SIT.I know every dog is different, but Duck is such a PIG(I mean in the eating manner, she would eat every bit of food you give her even if she's was full!).She sees a treat, and BAM, but's on the floor. She usually jumps when I tell her to come,(she's always so happy to come running!)so I either just step out of the way or tell her to sit the second before her feet leave the ground.
  19. Is this the site that the animal control officer made?If it is, I've been there, and I sure don't want to go again.you guys all saw the really disgusting pics but I didn't cuz I'm under 18, and I DON'T WANT TO either.
  20. Well, sorry I can't answer your question, but I have my own little question: What should I use to groom Duck?(She's a yellow Lab puppy just in case you don't know her)
  21. I cut Duck's nails every week but it still hurts when her nails accidentally scratch against me, it hurts a lot.Is there like a product that can help smooth her nails?
  22. Well, first of all, I never saw the mother...but I think they're all doing okay, except the white one..The white one only moved when I put food down..., but the others didn't get as close to me as the white one.I think the other three are as healthy as feral cats can be, cuz in Taiwan, there are lots of feral animals and they are smarter and more independent than most people think. If a dog from America came here and got abandoned, he would probably die right away, but a dog here knows how to cross the road by himself, knows where to get lots of food and where he won't be welcomed, and once I even saw a dog going up the skybridge made for the students to cross the road. They cross one part of the road, wait in the middle, and then cross when there are no cars, and once I saw a dog turn back cuz he knew he would never get past.So there are not many animals that die crushed by a car here, unlike in America, where they are so spoiled( :bday: Duck is more spoiled than any dog here). My friends came over once and when they saw Duck with all her chewy bones and treats, they were like Hey, she gets treated better than some people here!!.And they were so shocked when they found out I had the airconditioning on for Duck when I wasn't home.LOL.Oh, I forgot what I was talking about before all this.Ummm...oh yeah, the kittens.I wasn't really thinking of keeping them, just helping them survive when they're small and maybe taking them to the vet to be spayed and nuetered so they won't have more kittens when they grow up.Cuz these cats are probably going to takea long time to be tamed and I think they would like it better outside with the other cats because they have never known human companionship before.
