Have fun looking around, there is a great group of people here, and though I can't vouch for EVERYONE else, I certainly don't bite,so if you have any questions......... :D
It happened to me too...   I had a big ginger cat named Leo. He was born befor my eyes in my bedroom closet... well he had this wound under his chin that wouldn't close up so my mom took him in to have him tested... he had feline AIDS. She didn't tell me. We took him to the vet for what I thought was a surgery to fix the wound and then I saw the vet go through the hall to the back rooms... I can still see him  She didn't tell me until we were a few blocks down the street in the car. I demanded to go back and get my cat from the butcher (my very words) he was mine and I didn't want him to die!!! But she wouldn't go back. I never got to say good bye either. The really horrible thing is this clinic was cited just a couple of years later for throwing dead animals in the trash, which is illeagle in Washington...
Hazel, thats awful!! :( I have to admit, I had to laugh at your "Butcher" comment though.....an activist at a young age

<sigh> Apparently they need to RAISE their "minimal requirements" :x well at least YOU tried,Gooey.... :-?

that is so sad :( . and it makes me furious that AC couldn't have at LEAST checked up on the dog to see what his living conditions were
wash their faces like a cat
Aroura, have you noticed that characteristic in LILY too? Boxers seem to have a lot of cat like tendancies when it comes to grooming ...its interesting to know that Basenjis do the same!. I've also noticed that Loki SLEEPS like a cat...either all hunched up in a ball, or sprawled out on his back.....LOL

Oh and I don't know if it will be helpful or not,but I have had success using a head halter (halti, gentle leader) on my dog. He came to me with the philosophy that the definition of "walk" was "drag mom around the yard like a ragdoll".The Gentle leader corrected this behavior almost immediately. Some dogs don't adapt to it as readily though, and I can't vouch for how escape proof it is....my Boxer never tried to escape his lead....I guess he felt that pulling me along with him was part of the "fun"
-
Oh my! Thats an awfully large mix to have to wrestle with everytime you go for a walk!! Have you tried taking her to obedience classes? If not ,I would DEFINATELY sign her up for some.....if she's HAD obedience already, well it never hurts to sign her up for MORE...especially since she's such a handful on lead. I would consult with your trainer on the best collar/training device to use...and always walk her armed with plenty of her favorite treats....no treats when she pulls....reward reward reward when she's NOT fighting you....food bribery goes a long way  Good luck and keep us all posted on her progress!!

thats weird, that some guy can make a mutt and 100 years later we are here talking about it
Naw what is weird is someone can make up a breed and make up a breed history and then sell the dogs to people as 'rare' <LOL> You should see the 'history' on the Munchkin - why they were VIKING dogs don't you know
 ok, now I have this hilarious mental image of Leif Ericksen standing on his viking ship with his trusty Munchkin dog at his side

Thanks for the info,Carol and Bensam :D

ooooh <shudder> BAD memories here too....I literally grew up with my first dog.(corgi/foxy mix).He was six months older than me...my parents bought him just before I was born.....He lived til I was 17...I came home from school one day and my parents had taken him in to have him euthanized (without warning me)...I never got to say goodbye...nobody went in the room with him when they gave him the injection...and then they just left his body there for the vet to cremate...I felt SO guilty....and was angry with how my parents handled the whole thing...I know they thought they were doing the right thing and it would be easier on me,but I will never make that mistake with MY son...when its time for his pets to cross over he WILL get a chance to say goodbye.....

Awwwwww!...K, Bobbi is adorable!.......wait...can you classify something that BIG as adorable???? How about, she's adorable in a big cuddly polar bear sorta way???...yeah that works....ooooh but I would never cuddle with a polar bear...oh blahhh! you know what I mean!!! congrats on the new "pup"

what height of chain link fence/pen would be adequate for a
Smooshie replied to a topic in Everything about dogs
WHAT! those little yippers can do 12 FEET :o . I'd figure a golfball size hole in a shoe box and a couple pieces of raw spagehetti stuck in the ground, badda bing, containment  12 FEET I am absolutly shocked :o but hey if you guys say, it must be true
yup.....if Nike could only patent whatever's in a JRT's feet...lol...they are little fireballs! lol...deep,you'd better get a handle on the containment issue QUICK! Boxers are also well known for their "houdini-esque" escape skills. Loki can clear 6 ft chain link WITHOUT the benefit of momentum.....and can dig a trench in seconds...all in the name of FUN  -
I'm a big fan of Alpha wolfness for the tough problems above possitve enforcment (treats) sounds like your problem is already improving so no need for my advise but I'll tell you about the Akitas in my opinion Akitas are the WORST. now granted I've only known 4 or 5 but they all are missbehaving tyrannts, if I owned an akita it would have to be on a huge piece of land, but anyway me and a friend moved in together for awhile to do some construction work on a house and he had 2 akitas that were at eachothers throats 24 7. We tried alot to get them to mellow out to no avail so we decieded to take matters in our own hands and retake our house. we were ruff with them if they fought he or I was right there really fast we'd grabem by the scruff of thier neck lift them into the air, just till their feet were off the ground (something about animals and not having all four feet on the ground) and then we'd put them back down and hold them on the ground while YELLING. It all looked very drastic and I'm sure the dogs were scared, but that was the point. we never hurt them and they never cried. but the fighting did stop while we were around. They never liked eachother but at least they didnt fight this is just a small part of a huge problem with those dogs and that owner the whole family now 3 dogs 1 guy is a bit disfunctional and he wont hear anything anyone says to him about his dogs.
My ex boyfriend had a Dane/Lab/GSD cross with dominance issues....we took him to a trainer who gave us similar advice.....get him on his back ,either on the floor or up against the wall and hold him until he stops struggling, tucks tail and submits (NOT an easy feat with a 140 lb dog) BUT we did it and it worked like a charm...only had to do it twice...after that he never tried to bully either of us again....
I like to fight my pit bull: 1. For my socks in the morning "even if the dang thing is half on my foot already their still seems to be enough to grab and start a tug of war game........uuggghhh :-? 2. To use the rest room alone " well I have to fight my wife and kid as well, but Goblin makes a go at it" 3. To be intimate with my wife with out the voyeur watching with much interest. "crap who left the dog door open, what do I do now...no goblin get off the bed we are not playing" 4. To get out of the shower and not get licked dry........look dog this is a towel I can do it myself. :P    :o :D  :x :D
...what IS it with dogs that INSIST on BATHING you when you get out of the shower???? Loki will go into a kissing FRENZY when I get out of the tub and follow me around the house on a mission to lick every inch of exposed skin.....I have to put on socks and a sweatsuit before I leave the bathroom, just so he can't drool on me!

Corgi's are so cute :D ...are they Pembrokes or Cardigans?.....I had a dog as a child that was half Pembroke Welsh Corgi, half Fox terrier....he had that stubby little Corgi body with a pointy face fox terrier head..lol Are Corgi's actually docked or are some of them born tailless?.....The reason I ask is that I saw a Corgi the other day at the Dog Park that had no tail at all...not even a stub...I was wondering if this was genetic??
-
lol...Chaos is another one of the names hubby and I tossed around before ultimately settling on "Loki" (who incidentally is named after Loki the Norse God of mischief and chaos.....or Matt Damon's character in "Dogma" ) BTW...Havoc is a great name!....very fitting for a Boxer :D
-
Yes it is interesting to note the difference between how the docked boxers hold their "stubs" as opposed how Melli takes advantage of that (very long) tail! If you noticed on the downside of the A frame, all the docked boxers position their tails straight UP, while Melli holds hers DOWN for balance. You're right though...Boxers are docked at such a young age that they probably don't miss the functionality of having a tail...it certainly reinforces the issue of why no one should EVER dock an ADULT dog though. That tail isn't just for looks
-
yup....if there was a way to generate PINK boxers with white polka dots, SOME "reputable" breeder would be breeding them   Ooooh....I found a website that has pics of the original black boxers from Germany.Their body type was SO much heavier back then.....much more mastiff-like... http://www.moloss.com/001/breed/b/b006/

Speaking of German Boxer standards.....I was just recently on an Agility site that had pics of German bred Boxers competing ....I noticed that not one of them was docked...they all had full tails!...I wonder if this is becoming the standard there,or if it has always been that way??? I wonder if its acceptable in conformation shows too, or just in obedience/agility Boxers? Its interesting...they look like a totally different breed with a TAIL :D
Lyn, I would love to visit that site and see agility photos, do you still have the link info and would you be willing to share? thanks!
Sure Carol :) I can't seem to locate the article on German agility(it was a link from another site ,and I can't remember which one) but THIS is a great site for agility info: http://www.agilityboxer.com/ It has a pretty large photo gallery and a whole page of agility links....oh and there's a pic of one of those "Boxers with tails" on the front page too :D
