  1. Never had to pick one up off the street, but did have a Beagle cross my driveway while I was backing out one day. Thought it was the neighbors dog (he escapes all the time) so I had my son run him over there. It wasnt their dog. So I put him in my yard and called the police. They gave me the number of a person who had reported losing a beagle (no collar or tags) and I spent the whole day calling the number, only to get an answering machine....I had let my dogs out to play with him, and they all were having a great time, but it was winter, and the sun would set by 5:00 and I couldnt let the poor thing outside, and I couldnt bring him inside because of the cat....so after having him for 6 hours I finally called the police back and said the owner never called and someone needs to come get him....They sent the animal control van, and NOT 5 MINUTES after they left the owner finally called.....she was able to get him back fortunately. apparently he escapes all the time - WHY NO COLLAR AND TAGS?
  2. I, too, would have stopped the animal with any means possible. Including shooting it if necessary. I'm sorry, I hope no one is offended, and I have nothing against Pits. I have Labs, but if one was attacking and attempting to kill my dogs I would stop it cold. Any dog can attack and kill an animal - it's part of their wolf instincts that never really go away....
  3. I envy you - you spray water at my dogs and the male tries to steal the bottle, the female bites at the water and thinks its a game.....labs.... water-dogs-from-he** - LOL :D
  4. Thank you Rott - I wanted to know this too however, what is a "shutzhund"?
  5. I agree - providing the animal chooses to fast....dogs eat grass when their stomachs are upset because they know instinctively it will make them vomit.... I do not agree with imposing a fast on an animal, except for the old worming problems and when they are expecting surgery, because they know better then we do when they should and shouldnt eat. :D
  6. Shady - I am really sorry about your goat...and I understand why you didnt leave it to go get the owner. I wouldnt leave any pet of mine hurt that badly. and Laduenda, I am truly tired of your spouting off on this subject, and I truly hope you never have children.....I get the feeling you'd defend your dog if it savaged your childs face. How logical do you think YOU could be if something you loved was being aggressively attacked by someone's animal? Whether it be a pit bull or not, you cant decide to defend the dog when it's killing your own animals or family!!! I have nothing against Pit Bulls; they have a bad and often undeserved reputation, but YOU arent helping it any!!! ANYONE who owns an animal with a breed-aggressive tendency needs to KEEP IT UNDER CONTROL!!! Bottom line, the owner is responsible for this, not the dog. I am glad Shady that you have been able to work something out positively in this situation. This owner appears to care, which means he probably was not aware of the aggression his dog was capable of. It doesnt matter what they were bred for, originally, the owners need to take all of that into consideration when they get the dog. It's because of the owners that dont that the breed gets such a bad name in the first place. My thoughts are with you Shady....
  7. so sorry BK - our thoughts are with you. Rinny now awaits you on the bridge. You will be together again....
  8. You could try this but you have to be careful - enlarge the hole a little, pull the squeaker out and tie it in a SMALL balloon - then put it back in. this should muffle the squeaking without completely stopping it. Make sure the balloon is loose around the squeaker or it wont squeak anymore....But also make sure the dog cant pull it out - make multiple knots in the tie to be sure he cant pull it out of the toy, or else monitor his chewing closely. Good luck - earplugs otherwise??? :D
  9. The more I look at that picture the more I think it's Freebee's other half...the lab part is obvious, but she doesnt have the thick head and neck, and her legs are very thin (looks funny on her muscular body) and she doesnt have anywhere near the shoulder width of a purebred lab. The adorable pup in this picture looks alot like her in a lot of ways, and she does point without ever having been trained to.....
  10. aaawwwweeeeee - he's ADORABLE!!! Now I want one, and a Rufus, and a Newfie and I may as well go live in the shed after that....LOL :drinking:
  11. LOL - I LIKE that! Instead of calling Alex a Lab Mix from now on I'll just call him a DMD....
  12. As backwards as this may sound, put her in her crate, with her toys, and then ignore her. Dont talk to her, coax her or try to get her to be calm when she cries. When you pet her while she cries you are actually reinforcing the behavior. The same as you would pet her for being good or coming when called, she sees this as reinforcement of her fear. She will then use it against you. Realizing that you will pay atention to her when she's afraid, she'll act afraid every time she wants something.... Sometimes putting a blanket over the crate will calm then. or a sheet if it's very warm out. Makes them feel "denned". My golden never got over his dislike of the car - but he eventually learned to be calm when he was in there. :D
  13. This was the ONLY time YOU weren't calling ths shots. Hazel....He freely crossed even though you were holding her, and before that YOU had control over every situation. Probably the better bet would be to keep her on a lead (so you can control her) and let him wander freely through the house. Correct her firmly for every mistake, make her do all of her obedience training over and over, till she finally gets it. Aggression is hard to train out, but with persistance it can be done. Also, is he afraid of her? (Good luck getting him to admit that, but try....) They can sense fear. If he feels more comfortable around her if she's muzzled, you might want to consider that as well. At least for training purposes.... Good Luck! I know you have been working really hard with her, and in the long run it will most likely pay off! Keep at it! :D
  14. I always name mine after I get them too.....but I like Elmo
  15. LOL@DP!!! really! let's have a test on some of the things people really want to know!!
  16. Neither have I Behle - All my pups have always been spayed/neutered and all have come out fine. Just make sure they dont lick too much, and that the incision site doesnt get red or swollen, and in a few days they'll be right as rain again! we'll keep our fingers and toes crossed! :D
  17. NEGLECT???? What, did he think you sicced the Porcupine on your dog? Some people are just stupid...... My old Jarvis got skunked, TWICE, by the same skunk.....(not real bright, that time....lol) I suppose that would have been considered neglect too.... With all the real neglect that goes on, it amazes me how some people want to make an issue where there really isnt one.... :o
  18. definitely Pics!! I GOTTA see this..... LOL :D
  19. Neither of mine can tolerate fireworks....4th of July is always fun here.... :o
  20. I think nicknames are more common than proper names anyway....I only call my dogs (and my kid) by their proper names (KYLE RICHARD!! ALEX!! FREEBEE!!) when they're in trouble anyway.... otherwise it's Alex-Dog, Biggie Dog Biggie....Freebee-girl Freebee-babe Freeb Baby....They have to be considered intelligent just to remember that all of that refers to THEM!! LOL It reminds me of the old Bill Cosby skit when his kids thought there names were "Jesus Christ" and "God D*** It!" :D
  21. Y'know, as much as I love the Web, there is such a thing as TOO MUCH information..... I read quite a few sites/topics on ticks, all of them have instructions on how to remove them, but some of them say "pull straight out" (something my vet told me NEVER to do, because of the sucker/clamp things they adhere with) and others said "counterclockwise" without ever stating why. None of them said "clockwise" so there's probably some reason, I just havent found it yet.... Anyone else have an idea as to why counterclockwise is preferred? :-?
  22. Here's something unusual - Iomadh (Eye-oh-mod) gaelic for "Lucky" Anich (ah-neek) gaelic for "Rescued" :D
  23. "biggest" was a bad choice of words - biggest as far as height, weight, width? oh well.... I did about 60% - I didnt know the heart and breathing stuff.....
  24. Thanks Pik!! I have been WRACKING my brain trying to remember where I heard the name "Zaphod" before - I used to watch "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" all the time!! :D
  25. Is ok! :D
