applechickbsn
Hi everyone! I just bought a male Shih Tzu this weekend...named him Connor... He's 3 months old, born Feb 7th. How can I gauge his adult size? Is there a growth chart anywhere? I tried to weight him on our home scale and it said 6 pounds, but I just don't buy it... We have a trip to the vet today, so I'll find out his corect weight there. Just wondering if anyone knew where I could find a growth chart to see about how big he's gonna be! Thanks a bunch! rotten_two
within a breed each dog is different. did you see the sire or the dam? that might be the best way to gauge his adult size. in general i think they can be as much as 11" at the withers and anywhere from about 10-16 pounds. applechickbsn
Mom weighs about 8 pounds and Dad is smaller. Vet appt is at 2:30p.
DogPaddle
Congrats on your new puppy. I hope everything goes well at the vets. With an average shitzhu being between 8-11 inches and 9-16 lbs, and you saying the mom and dad are on the small side I would just guess he would fall on the smaller half of average - Maybe 8-10 inches and 9-13lbs? applechickbsn
well...visit at the vet went well. Doc says he is healthy. He thinks maybe between 10-14 pounds, which is ok. The only thing I am worried about is that he has a hernia that doc says is a pretty big one. He says some close up at about 6 months, but he doesn't think from the size of this one it will..if it isn't closed by 6 months, he wants to surgically repair it.
DogPaddle
Good to hear that otherwise he is in good health. Sorry to hear about your pups hernia, looking for the bright side - at least you'll have time to save up for the surgery and then if he doesn't need it you'll have some extra money.
