about a year ago i painted the concrete floors to a man's pit bull kennel and recently most all the paint has peeled off. the kennel floors are exposed to the outside. is there a certain type of paint, epoxy, or urethane that is widely known in the dog breeding/kennel business to paint the concrete floors of dog pens or kennels? i need some help with this problem. do these types of businesses even consider painting there floors due to the abuse they get?

this customer wanted his kennel floors painted because he was worried about bacterial infections from bare concrete. i know that paint on a flat surface outside will weather over time but i've never had anything peel this fast. i've read where the urine and fecal matter from pit bulls can burn grass, can it do the same thing to paint?

any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

cement is very difficult to paint and keep painted. I painted my basement floor, where dogs are not running on it, and in two years it already started to show wear. cement is water resistant. repellant. it doesnt absorb the paint, the way a wall does, so it easily comes off. Basically it lies ont he surface of the cement, and doesnt "take" the way paint does to a wall.

Secondly, what made him think that paint would keep away bacterial infections? bare concrete doesnt hold any more bacteria, to my knowledge, then a painted surface does. And what kind of bacteria are we talking about? Feces? urine? painting the floor wont stop that bacteria from spreading. the floor needs to be cleaned daily (multiple times if necessary)
with very hot water and baking soda.

If it is animal waste he is worried about, he should set aside a space in the kennel with gravel and sand, and teach the dogs to go there. That area too will need to be cleaned regularly.

They have special sealant type paint that is for cement. It's the type you use for concrete block walls in basements to keep them from leaking moisture into the basement and causing mold.

It comes in a white color, but I bet if you went somewhere like Sherwin Williams or Dutch Boy they could probably tint it as well.

Otherwise, I'd probably call a local vet's office and ask what type paint they use on the kennel runs, it has to stand up to constant scrubbing with heavy chemicals and constant fecal/urine saturation on a daily basis. And I'm sure they have to have something that will be durable..because having to paint your kennel constantly would make you lose boarding fees and make you have to turn away clients, and I'm sure most vets offices or clients wouldn't like that very much.

At the boarding kennel I work at the interior floors were painted with a sealant type paint about 15 years ago. The floors have no chips, scratches or any signs of wearing. The sealant is used quite often in boarding kennels...you certainly would not want just cement flooring...it can hold stains, and can hold odors...with a sealant paint it is resisant to stains (of course  ) and does not hold odors. When you have a busy kennel with 50 dogs in it and alot of dogs in for boarding will make mistakes...you don't want the kennel to look messy and have stained floors.
I will find out from the owner of the kennel exactly what the name of the sealant is they used. It's very popular in kennels and lasts for a long, long time.
We did not seal the outdoor runs, but, they are hosed down daily with a high pressure spray hose.
