1. Our akita, Nikoma, will be 10yrs old this fall and is a wonderful dog nanny. His page is at http://www.6stardanes.com/nikoma.html Nikoma shares the house with 2 people, 6 Great Danes & 3 cats. 2.
And then there is Weela the APBT who saved people as well as livestock I remember Weela. She was a very sweet girl who smiled alot. I use to board my horses at the same ranch as the Watkins did. I remember the flood - ugh it was horrible. So many of us waded through it in the beginning to get our horses out. Of course afterwards we needed Hepatitus shots. :-? As for famous dogs wasn't there an Akita who went to a train station daily in hopes to see his dead master? What's the name of the Service Dog Lab that aided his blind master our of one of the 9-11 buildings?
3. I'd highly suggest that during the vet appt you get blood drawn and a full panel run on it. I agree with others this is not normal. We neutered our guy Roku at 6 1/2... now 4 months shy of his 8th birthday he's seems even more lovey, lively and interested in people - if that's possible.
4. Yeah, I wouldn't let a bad experience scare me off.
5.
Imagine if those pet shops INSTEAD, took dogs from shelters and tried to sell them off...wouldn't that be a great idea?
Actually, that is what the petstore closest to where we live does. They work in close conjunction with the Humane Society and get dogs/puppies & cats/kittens from them. They also once a month have the Humane Society come and set up shop outside the store with other adoptable critters. We all have our own opinions and do what we feel is right.
6. Good luck! In all honesty its not good for a body to be vaccinated AND have surgery perform right on top of each other.
7.
A clause that breeders must take take back any dogs they have breed etc etc I could go on all day!
That's a must! It's in our contracts that if the puppy owner can not care for or no longer wants their pup that they must return the pup to us - for the life of the dog. Breeding is one of those topics that will always have people having varying opinions on. Yes, we breed but we also exhibit in conformation. We don't breed for pets they just come from breedings too.
8. That's great! I'm sure the ridgie is all the happier.
9. We feed our canine kids a raw diet so every day they get nice meaty bones to chomp on which helps to clean their teeth. However, prior to dog shows I do brush their teeth. They really like that. They enjoy the Petrodex toothpaste.
10. This url is only good for a week http://www.mountain-news.com/articles/2004/06/17/news/features/feature1.txt This is a copy on my site of the above so won't be time restrictive. http://www.6stardanes.com/mtnnewseagle.html
11. Here are a few more pixs of Pryde with last year's (That's My Baby) puppies. 12. Here are a few pixs of Pryde with some of our puppies...
13. Also our other cat, Pryde, loves when we have puppies. He'll get into the whelping box with the pups and when they are being weaned he loves to eat with them. Here he is with newborn Eagle I'll find more pixs later.
14. Here's a recent pix of our 3yr old Harlequin Great dane boy, Eagle, with kitty buddy Dante'

I'm going to add a little bit more.... As I said I'd like if there was an Altered Class at AKC shows with a different award system. This being said I'd like it to be open to ALL color/colors/variations of the breeds. Take an example Great Danes. In Danes there are only 6 color variations permissable to show in AKC shows - Fawn (tan with black face), Brindle (chevron or striped), Black, Blue (a steel gray color), Mantle (a blk/wht markings that resemble a Boston Terrier) & Harlequin (white base coat with black torn patches) With Danes there are several colors that are considered only pet - these include Merles (gray base coat with black patches), Piebald (White base coat with rounded spots & black on the skull of the head) With Harlequin breedings a litter can be entirely pet marked/pet colors leaving a breeder for nothing in the show ring. It can be disheartening. If these colors were allowed to show in the Altered class a breeder could have some pets that they wanted shown to the world out there.

At AKC Specialty show (a Specialty is a single breed show - not an All Breed Show) neutered/spayed canines can compete in the Veteran Dog/ Veteran Bitch class if they make the age requirement. With most breeds its 7 yrs of age. For A Gt. Dane its 6 yrs of age. Personally, I think it would be nice to have a different class for altered canines with a different award system. One of the main reasons this more than likely won't come to pass is - I'm going to be blunt here MANY breeders would not want their pet quality dogs in the show ring as they may embarrass them. Me, I'd love our pet kids to be out there.

RAW diet?

We've been feeding our 4 footed canine kids a raw diet for almost 4 years now. There are soooo many things I like about it! We're lucky to be able to get the majority of our dogs' menu from a co-op.
19.
this lady had a great dane and she stuck her hand ALL THE WAY in her poor big dog.. you know that had to hurt the dog. and WHY woudl someone stck their hand THAT far up.. why stick a hand in at all? ..
I understand feeling for animals however you have to remember that the show boils the "story" down to a total of 22 minutes. A whelping which has taken hours and hours is trimmed down to a matter of a few minutes. You fail to see everything going on. That Great Dane is our girl, Star. Did I hurt her? Not at all. When she whelps she wants me there with here and helping her. Next time you see the show watch it closey... when Star walks in the room and is laying on the bed. When she has that 1st big contraction... look at her face - what does she do? She looked immediately at me. Yes, I had my arm in there... Star was standing and was not at all restrained. She knew I was helping. I don't have a big hand, its about the size of a small Dane puppy. If I hadn't assisted the the times I did 2 pups more than likely would have died. I've spoken with other breeders of Giant breed dogs and what I did is done by others when it is necessary. I say Giant breed because you wouldn't do this to a bitch of a small size because it would hurt. Some background on me... I use to work at our vets. Do you notice during the show that I'm there WITH Star during her Xray and not in another room or on the side lines. Our girl Star is around 133lbs. She's a good sized girl. More about the filming for someone who has been there-done that. They filmed us around 14hrs the 1st day (pregnancy) They filmed the whelping (2nd visit) but didn't catch it all with the stationary camera. We had a Merle born outside on the deck (3rd puppy- you see him in the litterbox but didn't see his arrival) 4th puppy was stillborn, 5th I pulled out - I was so scared she was going to be dead because of being contaminated from the stillborn. 6th puppy -(there was a 6th!) was born after the camera crew left. Before the camera crew returned at 7 weeks of age we sadly had 1 pup PTS as it developed a terrible infection. That's why you see 4 .. then later still 4 but there is a change of color. A lil more info... Lass graduated to become a Service Dog earlier this year and Fortune is over 1/2 there to becoming one .. he already has most of the requirements met. During the camera crew visit at 7 weeks they were here for another 8 hrs or so. So Chaos Entertainment decide what to put in a show and how to edit. Personally, I think the show has its pluses and minuses. I think it is sad when a shelter animal is bred. I wish the show was stretched out and more like an hr show so that way they could go into whatever "breed" is being aired, that they could about health & health clearances and show the bad points as much as the good. I do like that they didn't edit our stillborn puppy out - I think that's important but sadly gets swept under the rug too swiftly. P.S. Thanks Alicat. :D I found this place by following a referral link to my site.
