Guest Anonymous Posted July 28, 2004 Posted July 28, 2004 My husband and I purchased a 7 week old beagle last sunday. Ever since we brought her home, she has had diarrhea and nothing seems to help. I took her to the vet and she prescribed Albon, but after 6 days, I see no results. I have also been giving her Pepto Bismol 3 times a day for 3 days, but that has not been working at all either. I contacted the breeder, and she suggested boiled chicken...that has not worked either. My poor little puppy has to go to the bathroom constantly, and she cannot keep any food in her system. Any suggestions? Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 28, 2004 Posted July 28, 2004 Thanks for the advice. So do you suggest I stop giving her the Pepto as well as the Albon, or just stop giving the pepto? He energy level is high...she never acts mopey, it just breaks my heart to se her with such bad diarrhea Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 28, 2004 Posted July 28, 2004 She is now 8 1/2 weeks old. But I still feel bad starving her... But if it is in her best interest I will do that. When she was at the vet on thursday, she had her fecal done and also recieved her parvo and distemper immunizations. I have called the vet since then and they suggested the pepto, but like i said, i have seen no results. She is usually awake for about an hour to an hour and a half and then sleeps for about 2 hours. Every time she wakes up, I take her outside and it never fails, she always has the diarhea. It is tearing me up becuase I feel so helpless. (p.s. I looked it up and the ALbon is a medication used to treat bacterial buildup and alleviate diarrhea in dogs) Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 28, 2004 Posted July 28, 2004 Yes, Tiara has been wormed. Fecal came back negative on Thursday. Next worming due August 10. I really appreciate all the help. So far this is what i've gotten out of it: (1) 12 hour starve, but what time should I start it? (2) canned pumpkin and plain yogurt, how much? (3) boiled rice, how much? **Taira weighs about 6 !/2 lbs. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted July 28, 2004 Posted July 28, 2004 This could literally be anything from a stomach infection which may require the use of Flagyl or it could be cocicida or a resistant strain of hook worms. Did your vet give her a dose of Strongid (would be a yellow liquid that smells like bananas)? Not all hookworm/whip worm infestations show up on fecals. I would get her BACK into the vets office and DEMAND an answer! Oh yeah it could also be Giardia. A former foster pup had that and constantly looked like water! Quote
mfaust Posted July 29, 2004 Posted July 29, 2004 I can't imagine what you are going through. My chocolate lab puppy of 4 mos had diarrhea, so I took her to the vet on Tuesday. The vet checked her feces and it came up clear, so the vet told me it was probably just the flu. I was supposed to keep an eye on her until today, Thursday, and if she threw up at all call immediately. Well, she threw up at 7 am Wednesday, so they told me to bring her back in. They told me they were going to run the parvo test, and they asked if I could leave her w/ them for the day so they could monitor her. I was a nervous wreck until I called to find out that the parvo test was negative. She did very well yesterday, so the vet does think that she either ate something or has the flu. They gave me two antiobiotics for her for the next week. I definitely recommend finding a vet that you trust. I was very pleased w/ the service, care, and understanding my vet office gave Baylee. I'm pretty new at all of this, so I won't offer any advice, just sympathy and understanding. Quote
