Hi all, info seeking again........
On another thread I read about, and saw, one of the most beautiful dogs I ever laid eyes on, the Saarlooswolfhound, or wolfdog as I have now seen it called. It may well have been love at first sight! However I have had very little success in surfing the net for more info on the breed.. can anyone tell me more? Somehow I think my chances of getting one are very low indeed, as I am Uk- does anyone have one in this country?! I'd love owners- I know at least one has visited the forum- to tell a little bit more about their dogs and what they're like to keep. Oh and are they recognised by any breed societies because I can't find them on the UK or American kennel club sites........Thankyou!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think they originated as wolf hybrids but that they have been developed into a breed of dog with certain wolfish characteristics... I am not sure, the thread where I stumbled across them was under showing and was called 'showing dogs with hereditary defects'- I think..!! So they are a breed of dog, again I think!!!!! :-?

This was on the breeds part of this site

General His colours are ranged from light to dark black-wild colour (wolfish gray), from light to dark brown-wild (bush-brown) and from very light-coloured to white. Typical for this wolf-dog is the very close way he wants to live with his family. Being so attached to his pack it is quite impossible to keep him in kennels for long periods, especially alone. This will destroy his sozialization and make him panic-stricken. The wolf in this dog makes it impossible to use or train him as a guard dog: he is lacking in every kind of egression against people. Meanwhile his strong personality and will, need an affectionate and continuing education. patience makes him a well-behaving dog, but without showing complete submission as seen by shepherd dogs.

Characteristics There he is, the actual Saarlos wolf-dog, in whom children especially recognize the wolf. A powerful, wolf-like, coarse haired dog. The height of the male dog may average from 65 till 75 cm and of the bitch from 60 till 70 cm. The Saarloos wolf-dog has to give an impression of an alert, carefull, affectionate dog, behaviour: reserved against people and situations strange to him, but this without showing nervousness or fear.
History Leendert Saarloos (1884-1969) was an obstinate, but very enthusiastic man, interested in everything nature could offer him. Dogs were his primary interest. But Leendert raised objections against the domesticated dog, because this dog had lost a lot of his natural qualities and had degenerated too much. It is not amazing, that he saw himself challenged to halt the decline of degeneration and domestication, hoping to improve working qualities at the same time. To realize his experiments Leendert Saarloos chose a German shepherd dog of the classical type and a wolf, because of the resemblance in their appearance. The German shepherd Gerard van de Fransenum and the she-wolf Fleur became the ancestors of the breed. After a long period of stringent selection a new breed was born - in 1975 officially recognized and given the name of Saarloos wolf-dog: honour where honour is due.

I, myself, am owner of three Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs, a breed which have very similar origin to Saarlooses. The breed is also FCI recognized (and only FCI).

I know there is already one CzW in UK but I didn't hear anything about any Saarloos Wolfhonds there. The breed is not so popular because its requirements are quite high. The owner have to be already experienced dog owner and know how to socialize dogs.

The Saarloos Wolfhond is recognized only by FCI. AKC and KC do not recognize the breed.

There are some Saarloos Wolfdogs breeders in Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and France. I don't remember any links right now but you can visit http://www.wolfdog.org web site (it's about Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs) and check links section (in the menu on the left) which also has links to Saarloos related web sites. :)

Hi Huan, can you tell me if there are any specific laws that the uk CzW owner has had to abide by or is the dog seen as just a dog? I am just wondering because of all the hoohah about wolf hybrids we had here a while back, is there any kind of licence required to keep this breed?

Ups. I looked into it further and noticed that there is no CzW in UK yet but there are people who want to import one this month or maybe they already imported one. They have their own website at: http://pacino.homestead.com/1.html and their email is on this page: http://pacino.homestead.com/contact.html. You can contact them and discuss your questions. I don't think there are any special arrangements required but it's better to talk to them personally. BTW: As far as I know they will take CzW from the French kennel: de Louba Tar which also breeds Saarloos Wolfhonds.
MY apology still stands Mei-Mei I feel so bad ..but I have found out some interesting information on why I have been mislead...I spoke to the man at the dog home here he has what are wolf/husky hybrids and he is very proud of them..he contacted the Saarlooswolfhond association over 5 years ago and apart from thanking him for his interest he has heard nothing more although he is more than qualified to own and keep one!!! so he does'nt rate them very highly and he said the people who do own one of these animals are very secretive about it for fear of the dog being stolen or something bad happening that they very often pass them off as hybrids too in the need to be safe....so I could of met one and not known it!!!!with a bit of paranoia sinking in he could have them too and be lying!!!! oh no I need a lie down.........
I can certainly understand not wanting to sell a dog considered purebred to someone who is raising mixbred wolf hybrids ie mutts with some purported wolf in them. I would not sell a purebred dog of any kind to someone like that either.
Sounds to me like the Saarlooswolfhond association has some careful and wise breeders in it.
In many areas wolf hybrids are illegal to own or breed or sell or a combination of the above.
I personally think its a terrible thing to keep a wolf captive to breed mutts off of - something that is as bad for the breed of wolf as it is for the breed of dog mixed in with it. Its another case of unwise breeding for the sole purpose of selling cute pups to the gullible in most instances.
Its really tragic here in the states how many of the mixes go to completely unsuitable homes that have completely erroneous conceptions of what they have purchased and the poor animal ends up dumped out or dead for it once it matures or earlier when it does not meet expectations.
I think if you love wolves you would not want their gene pool polluted with domesticated dog genes. If you love dogs you are undoing thousands upon thousands of years of selection for animals that can get along safely in human society when you mix wolf in. Doesn't make any sense to me.

I was concerned as I could imagine that there would be great interest over a dog that looked like a wolf, and that there would very likely be someone reported for keeping a 'wolf' because of it. I know that many people were reported for owning wolf hybrids in the UK a couple of years back and that at least one dog believed to have some wolf blood, was taken from the owners. I would think/hope that the correct papers would be sufficient to 'clear' the owner, provided by the breeder. I don't know the legalities involved- where do you stand if you are accused of having a wolf that is actually your dog!!?

Hi
I own one SWH and taking care of a second one over the last couple of weeks.
As has been said before the SWH /TWH are dogs, not hybrids but are definately not the easiest pets. They are very pack-orientated but also very strong willed andare close to nature. Most of them are really cautious and shy, can't stay hojme alone and you can't really expect to have a working dog when you get a SWH. (unlike the TWH that is better too train)
I have my own problems with the dutch association but can't blame ( actually agree) for not wanting to sell them to someone who ones hybrids.
The SWH is a dog i definately fell in love with and I hope that by the strict regulations as to knew puppy owners, the association as well as other breeders have, we can safeguard the future and well being of the breed!!

Hi nanoekie
Thankyou for the information- I really learned from this post and the links people have contributed and I am just fascinated by these dogs. All my life I have personally :) preferred dogs that were closest in form to their wild ancestor- the first I really noticed in that respect was the German Shepherd dog and I have loved the breed ever since, but I think that huskies and Malamutes are particularly striking. I find these breeds that I have just discovered particularly beautiful. Thanks again to everyone who contributed! :D

I have always been a lover of the breed. I think that sometimes it would be hard to own one yes, but immpossible.. no. I hope to be able enough one day to get one. I fall for the "wolfy" looks.

Errrggg.. sorry K but this is summer vaction! No homework.. untill a few weeks when I start high school.. scary! We already have to learn spanish and I'm trying to learn german at home... those were german dog commands by the way... I usually train dogs in german.
Really why? is it so that people would find it hard to steal your dog as it will not respond to them I heard that somwhere before?
Lots of reasons.

I guess that could be one reason.. Then I think they respond to you better in the ring because they have to acctually listen to you. And I have always wanted to be a K-9 police officer but have decided not to. I have lots of friends that are and my mom used to be extremely active in law. So I thought it would be cool to train my dogs in german like alot of them do. Also its only my mom me and sister in this house no man or dad so I get kinda worried when my mom or any of us are at the house alone at night and we have some weird people living by us so when you teach your dog german its kinda a safety thing as well. If someone is breaking into your house tell the the german command for attack and they will not know what it means so they don't know when to pull the gun on your dog. That is just the way I look at it.
