My ex- in laws had a Black lab, that I think had a problem with it till he died. He woudl try to mount people, he mounted his doggy pillow (which was very disturbing to me) and was a general terror. I've been taking the water bottle to Soldier when he is bad or barking. It seems to be doing the trick. But for the male dog owners who's male puppies never went there...that's amazing to me. I've never had a male puppy who didn't go thru that phaze and have to be trained that it was rude. WOW :o I thought it was basic male puppy behaviour just like chewing and potty training! Who Knew!

Maybe Soldier is in the minority here. I always thought that this is a normal stage the boy dogs (and some girl dogs) go through. I know it is bad mannors (of course!). Aside from my very first dog when I was wee little, every dog I had that was male went through this! LMAO! Maybe it's just where we live...it's in the water!

Yup, he's neutered. lol. He was neutered a week before xmas. He's not exactly a spastic dog. He's not over the top with anything...good or bad. It's just funny. And trying not to laugh when I'm correcting him, is really hard. I'm sure you know what I mean. Trying to make your voice deeper and strong when you want to laugh. If I have a puney voice and I'm laughing, he pays me no attention. lol

Ah yes...Soldier and I :Help_2: have entered "The Humping Zone". One day he's my little puppy, the next he's grabbing my leg in the kitchen, or tackling me if I'm on the floor. That weird, persistent, glazed look in his eyes which convey to me "I don't know what I'm doing, I don't know why I'm doing this, but I MUST I MUST!!!" He's so polite when he jumps up, trying not to push me over or scratch me...but at the same time it's just RUDE! *Laugh* It's been SOOOO long since I have had a boy puppy, I actually forgot about "The Humping Zone" :shake: Dee dee Dee Doo Dee Dee Dee Doo Dee Dee Dee Doo

I just worry about the puppys when they are sent on a plane. My gosh, you guys should see what some of my bags looked like after I got to my destination! I dont' know if the handlers are nice or criminals, dog beaters or wife beaters! It's just too scary for me. My Timber mutt flew from Fla to NC a million years ago, she came away unscathed and not bothered (other than happy to get out of the travel crate). So I know that the experiences can be fine, just from my own. But i'm so paranoid about stuff like that. And researching a dog and a breeder online and over the phone...without seeing the living conditions of the animals and so forth...just seems risky to me.

Showing my age (ack!) Old Yeller! 1. Old Yeller was so much like my dog! I would watch the movie everytime it came on tv and I would forget that my dog wasn't on the screen in that movie. 2. Also, the original animals in "The longest journey" They were orginally a Siamese (very much like the one I have now) a Lab and a Bull Terrier. I thought that they were all awesome. 3. The bears in "The Bear" Not the cartoon version :P

Soldier is basically 4 months old. He walks VERY well on his leash...not perfect...but for his age I can't complain too much. When it's just me and him, he walks beside me and only gets distracted when he see's people. (wants them to pet him) He knows Sit, Shake, At ease (lay down) Roll over, beg and Kisses, Leave it, Down...I am probably leaving out a few. I need to teach him to stay and to heel. But when I do....Timber mutt comes over and bungs it all up. It's also rather hard for me without a second person. I have always in the past had a second person to hold the dog and assist me with "stay". Soldier is starting his "humping" stage :roll: and these two commands I feel would help to curb this. What a dork he is when he tries it! Ugg! He is a very smart dog...but very independant at the same time...does anyone have any ideas to help?

If you have a Lowes or Home Depot near you, they have a Capture Pet stain and odor with enzymes. This is what I use on my carpet. The smell is somewhere between shampoo and laundry detergent and very light. It works wonders on my carpet and I love it more than NM! I do not see where it says it's laundry safe, but I should imagine it would be alright. You could test it out on something "not so important" like an old dishrag or something first. I do have to mention, tho, that when there is an "oopsy" I normally pour this straight on the spot and work it with a towel. I have not had any problems with the towels I have used. NO discolouration or bleaching. They are fine. If my dog or non-dog :kociak: made an oopsy on a blanket, I would not have second thoughts about putting the blanket in with this Capture. :)

is there somethign you can keep at the house for snake bites for dogs? Being on the other side of the world, I have only heard how poisonous Aussie snakes are. It seems I heard somewhere that there was something you could put down in yards/gardens to repell snakes. Although we have Rattlesnakes and copperheads/water moccasons here, 9 times out of 10 they hit the trail if a dog gets after them. And normally if a dog gets bit, there is enough time to get them to the vet for anti venom. (Course size,age and health of dog plays a part as well)

well, educated guesses to what Soldier is runs along these lines: Boxer mix GSD mix Rottie mix Chow Mix Lab Mix So I figure his mother was a GSD Boxer mis and his father was a Rottie Chow Lab mix! (There is absolutely NO way to tell unless we get Dion Warwick over here to ask her psyc friends) But I do know he's got some measure of GSD in him. And the tale tell black spots on his tongue tell me chow chow. His paws are HUGE and webbed, which makes me think there is a sprinkling of Lab. His head has been described as Block Head, and many rottie owners see rottie in him. He was listed as a Boxer mix from the Pound I got him from, and his nose is really short and wide for any of the dogs I listed above. I could lay a fifty cent peice on his nose FLAT. When people ask me, anymore, what type of dog he is, I tell them to take their pick, and run with it! k, My Ole girl Timber has never been a big barker. She would bark in the back yard if she saw the neighbors let their dogs out. She would bark at a stranger in the yard...that sort of thing. But she has never been a big barker. My dogs in the past weren't exactly big barkers either. It was what i consider "normal". They weren't always quiet..but when they barked they had their dog reason. Cat=bark, stranger=bark, other dogs bark=bark...very very typical. Soldier, however, seems like he's trying so hard to TALK. Before I hear all the technical stuff about dominance and any reaction is a good reaction to a dog....just hear me out. hehehe He barks like a 4 year old child would talk! If Timber won't play with him, he grumbles and barks. The barks are a high pitch "little puppy" bark. If Timber is chewing a toy he barks. He goes back and forth between the highpitch bark and the grumbly bark. Which I translate as him begging and then trying to initiate play...as in "I'm gunna get it...you better watch out...are you watching??? i'm gunna get it..." If he wants Timber to love on him, he makes this nasal squeaky whine and acts like he's going to nip at her lips, but doesn't. When he eats (I thought this was a problem but it turns out it's not) he makes what could be misinterperated as a growl. But it's more of a YumYum Growl Purr combination. I really think it's the same sound I woudl make if I had really good lobster. "MMMmmmmMMMMMM...OH YEAH!" When i'm at the PC having coffee in the morning and he has just gone potty and been given breakfast...is all rawled up...he will try to jump in my lap and makes a "growlowlowlowl" sound. When I do actually help him up in my lap, he just licks and wants a cuddle then wants me to give him a chew toy (while he's in my lap) When I grab him quick and kiss him nose, he makes a sound that I can only explain as cross between squeaky door and a growl. But when he's making that sound he tries to give me kisses and submitts on his back and there is all kinds of wiggling involved. Nothing that leads me to think it's a dominate-style behaviour. He just always seems to show what mood he's in by some "verbal langauge" These aren't all growls and barks...at me or Timber...it's really coming across as TOO me and Timber. :niewiem: Does anyone have a dog that is so Verbal?

hehehe I know that has to be frustrating! But at the same time, it's really funny and charming! You should be proud that your dog is SOOO clever. Even if it is an inconvience! What a great dog!

He is, thank gigishiba. I had a bit of a worry last night. After he woke from a drug induced nap, his left eye looked like cherry eye. Both of his eyes were puffy, but the inside third lid on his left eye wasn't retracting. It and HE seem fine this morning. I still plan on calling the vet when they open and talking to them about it. But he's playing with his toys, bothering Timber Mutt, appetite for food and water back to normal and even wants to sit in my lap while I have my morning coffee. This, however, I'm not letting him do. He's not a lap dog and I dont' want him getting hurt over my struggling to pick his gangly self up!. (Soldier is a 14 week, 25+ lbs mongrel of med/large breeds. No one told him this and he heard me picking on him when he was TINY telling everyone he was half Chihuahua and half Great dane. So I believe he thinks that this is what he is and that makes it acceptable to sit in my lap when I'm sitting at the PC table) When Soldier has a few more days under his belt, I feel I will let him up in my lap again. Tho I will have to put a chair on either side because he really is too big to be a lap dog :dog:
