1. This was a trivia that my sister had to try. How many fear words do you know that actually exist? Does anybody know cool "fear" words? All I know is... arachniphobia - fear of spiders hydrophobia - fear of water I'm afraid of heights. How do you say that?
2. Yeah, it's hearable. But I don't understand the direction line, about setting it to your dog's pitch intensity. It all sounds the same to me and Luka's reaction doesn't seem to change with the different pitches.
3. i'm glad to be back too! I have a break from horse shows until August. And it's summer vacation! How's everyone been doing? I wanted to teach Luka to come to it, just because we have woods that Luka wanders through. So if there was another person with a dog whistle around here, would Luka follow the wrong whistle?
4. Anybody here use a dog whistle to train their dogs? I just got one, but what are the things you can do with one?
5. How do you keep your dogs cool in the summer? We don't use air conditioning unless it becomes unbearable because it's upposed to be bad for your health. It screws up the body's natural cooling mechanism, or something like that. But Luka's panting and drooling. I know it's normal and not dangerous, but still, it's hot. Thank dog we have a furnished and cool basement, but it's so boring down here. And, Luka hates the water, so it's not like he'll go out and jump in a doggie pool or chase the sprinkler. He dosn't eat ice cubes cuz he gets bored of them. :-?
6. Last summer, there were couple of cases where mothers murdered their children by locking them in the car. Two kids were locked in the trunk! How could they do such a thing? Just think, they cook in there and eventually pass out, never to awake. :x
7. Absolutely! Thanks for reminding us. It's especially dangerous in the heat if you have a flat-faced dog (bulldogs, pugs, etc.), because they're prone to breathing problems. And the metal buckles of the seat belts can actually burn the dogs. You shouldn't leave dogs or children in the car for more than 7 minutes (or so I heard), with windows rolled down, parked in the shade (just for emergencies - like if you absolutely had to stop for a potty break). By the way, be careful leaving your dog ou in the yard during the summer. Pavement gets very hot and can burn a dog, and tar can melt and become matted in the fur and burn. BTW, is it true that dogs with thick fur is insulated from the heat, along with the fur acting as a cooler in the heat?
8. Yep! They have a bunch of colors. The most common is red, but they also have red with a little black overlay (sesame), or black with tan markings, which are all preferred by the AKC. However, I have seen all tan ones too.
9. I love all Japanese breeds. - shibas, akitas, shikokus, and the ainus (hokkaido) I was actually almost going to get a shiba, but decided to rescue Luka instead. According to this Japanese website, http://www.na.rim.or.jp/~ako/shikoku.html, it's 49.748yen (about $500) to ship one from Tokyo to New York, in a 60X45X50cm cage. Plus the price of the dog.
10. Some of you may have noticed that I haven't been posting as much lately. Well, the reason... I don't like you guys anymore! (jk! - never!). The real reason... I've entered the horse show season and I'll be wicked busy. Practicing, training, and working the horses until about 6:00 most days, then school work. Then I'll be off at the shows on the weekends. *sigh* The season starter was today. Because it was a small 4H show that's not as competitive, I took a challenging saddlebred. She's hyper and likes to randomly take off on you or start bucking or do something crazy. We pinned 6th in the equitation class, but didn't pin in the pleasure class. She's not as flashy and showy as the other horses, or well behaved, but we had a great ride! She actually tried behaving and she didn't give me a hard time. So, wish me luck, and don't forget about me! LoL.
11. Thanks guys! I forgot to mention to the new members, Luka was surrendered by his previous owners because of separation anxiety. But I don't understand how all of a sudden, after 4 months of having him, he'd start showing signs of it again. There hasn't been a change in the household either. He had a full exam, but the vet didn't recommend drugs for him, unlss it got WAY out of hand (it's getting there) and it'll prolly be $$$ because there won't be a guarantee that it'll help, he said. BTW, Luka willingly sleeps at night in his crate, so he is used to the crate. I just can't think of how to leave him alone from now on. I'll need a solid iron box with nothing in it... How can he be left alone without causing damage to the house and to himself? BTW, do the "Comfor Zone" plug-in things work? It's supposed to release female dog pheromones that comfort and relax the dog, the same thing that the mothers use to relax her puppies. It's supposed to help with s.a., but has anyone ever tried it? And do you think regular play sessions with other dogs would help relieve some stress and improve his status?
12. Okay, well, Luka's all of a sudden turned into a really bad family pet during the last two weeks. He snatched 4 BBQ porkchops and 6 bananas, 2 danishes, and 5 muffins from the counter and ate them. He also totally went through the trash. A lot of people suggested crating him, so we put the crate in the basement and lef him there for an hour while we were out. Well, when we came home, she had broken out of his crate, and had totally trashed the room. He dumped trash cans and tupperwares and totally scratched at the carpet. Part of our floor has no carpeting now, cuz he dug at it all the way to the concrete underneath. So what do I do now? My parents are p!$$ed, and if he's that powerful outside his crate, imagine how much self-damaging he'd be in his crate. If he doesn't improve, or if I can't find a solution ASAP, we're gonna have to give him up  . What I don't get is that up until about a month ago, he was perfectly fine being left alone for 5.5 hours! Now he can't even be left alone for 1 hour without being so destructive! Why? What to do? HELP!
13. I'm doing a research paper for school and since it was a free topic, I decided to do it on how pet stores are greatly contributing to the number of unwanted pets. And because we can use any source we want to, I need your help. What are your views on pet stores? Do you agree that it is irresponsible? Do you disagree with selling animals to just anybody, without finding out about their history with animals, knowledge, or housing requirements? Do you think that it would be better to have staff that have knowledge about animals, and not just hiring anybody for the job? Do you agree that dogs from pet stores have physical and behavior problems? Do you feel that many unwanted dogs are due to the ignorant owner, who purchased a dog at a pet store because it looked cute and sad? It'd be great if you could give me any type of info concerning this. I also need help narrowing down the topic, because my teacher said that I'd find too much info on this topic and that it should be narrowed down. Any suggestions? He suggested doing a paper on the psychological affects on dogs at pet stores, but it''s hard to find info on that. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
14. My sister got cut by a fishing line cuz these two boys were running along, dragging a really long piece behind them. They whipped right by my sister (she was only 2), and she got caught and cut her leg. The rope thing is a good idea, but I tried this at home, and he kept runnning back to me and then back out, that he and I were all tangled. We looked pretty hopeless and pathetic... I think I might put some treats in a crinkling bag, so that he can hear it. Thankds for all the advice guys! Has any of your dogs "taken off" in a public area?
15. I really want to take Luka to the beach or lake or something, but how do I insure that he can run off leash? At home, he's really good at coming back when I call him. But when he gets excited, I bet it'll be a different story. How can I make sure that he can run around, while still coming when I call him. He's got way too much energy for me to run along him with the leash.
16. This is a little thing that my teacher made us think about over the weekend, and I just wanted your opinions. Would you live forever? Why or why not? I'm for no, but I can't think of a good reason why not to. I mean, it's just one of those things...
17. I can't believe she wanted to "plan to reapply ( for a breeding license) and begin breeding again in Jackson County and eventually in Madison County, where animal control laws are more lax." That idiot!
18. How old is Freebee? Depending on the age, it may be a typical lab problem. I know that shaking the butt when walking (waddling) is a pretty common result of hip socket problems. Some one may have already suggested this (sorry, I didn't have time to read all the posts - homework...), but while she's standing on all four legs, try picking up the back leg and turning the foot over so that the toes are curled up and the top (opposite of the sole) of the foot is on the ground. If Freeby immediately picks the foot up and fixes it, so that all four paws are in contact with the ground, it means that it's not so serious. Sorry, I'm the worst explainer of things... Hope everything works out fine. Could she have tripped while playing outside and maybe strained herself or somehing?
19. *sigh* ofcourse not. Not to mention he's part lab... *sigh*
20. Thanks for asking Daisymom. The little :evil_lol: is doing fine. He still has diarrhea, but there were little chunks of pork bones in it (yeah, I checked...), which means that his digestive tract is still working. He even went jogging. He go some rice and bananas yesterday. Now the only problem is... do you think he learned his lesson? LoL.
21. Luka-pop

I have puppies due

Awwww! They're so precious! Four girls, no boys? I'm sorry about the fifth one.
22. If I had the time to take Luka to classes, I would love to. He's very athletic and agile, so he'd enjoy it.
23. Dunno. But Cheetah just started agility classes with her spayed Roxie. Lets all wish Cheetah and Roxie luck!
24. I have a lab mix, and all he does is shred everything and then just spit it out. I guess it's cuz he's only half lab! LoL
25. Yeah, how is Daisy? BTW, Luka just had diarrhea! It means that is bowel is working, but iit's also a preliminary sign of bloat. Hope everything works itself out. And thanks, I'll give him veggies tomorrow, if his diarrhea is settled.
