1. OK, I know you dont know me, but I GOTTA ask - what kind of "science doc" are you? Science fascinates me....
2. Thank you Carol - he was a GOOD DOG - always! (well, except for chewing up the cabinet - lol) The breeder I used to work for said that he thought alcohol interfered with the dogs ability to "scent" you - because the smell is so overwhelming to their delicate noses....so that may be why you werent recognized right away Hillside. He said he thought that only the "nosers" (bloodhounds and the like) could get by it naturally because of their ability to train on a scent from a shirt or hat or something, and remember only that scent while they were hunting. He also said that dogs are suspicious of people who smell like alcohol, for that reason. They want to know WHO YOU ARE, right now! lol I have read other stories, too, that dogs can instinctively tell "bad" people by their scent...and will react if they feel themselves or their "pack" threatened. I dont know how true that is. Keep the stories comin'!!! :D
3. welcome doc! You probably dont know me, I'm kinda new. My name here is courtnek, although everywhere else it's Katy... those are my "kids" in the avatar. It has been my experience with shelters that the ones located in more "ritzy" areas usually have better kennel situations for the pets. They are going on govt. grants and donations, so I guess that is why some are better than others. I dont like the thought of dogs in hanging pens.... I have seen cats that way, and they dont seem to mind it, but not dogs.... I also cant say I'm real happy about the being chained out situation. That may be because I'm in the Chicago area, and it gets way too cold here to leave dogs out all weekend. I guess I would try the volunteer thing and see how it pans out. Maybe you could make a difference. Good luck! :D
4. I still cant see it - a lab on the light side would be 35-40 lbs in my experience - and that's a small one. I've never had a BC, are there really ones that weigh only 20 lbs??? All the ones I've seen or met have been around 40, maybe 35 for the small ones....or am I just being fooled by all the hair? My malmaute/BC mix weighed in at 100 lbs....but looked like he was about 150 because of the hair....give him a bath and he shrunk two sizes.... :D
5. sorry, I wasnt trying to imply that I sympathised with the car thief, cuz I dont. And I do have a lot of respect for the police under most circumstances. These particular police need some real help though... It's a sad fact that there are "bad" cops in every precinct. And they give the good cops a bad name. Cookeville needs to do some real thinking about the training or re-training of their police force....
6. Must have been a typo in the ad....there are no lab/bc mixes at 3 years that weigh 20 lbs...... your lab is purebred, right yellow? how much does he/she weigh? My small one is a mix and weighs 75 lbs....so I guess I just cant see it at 20 lbs....(and NO, she's NOT fat.....LOL) :D
7. Thank you laduenda; we appreciate the apology. Please try to understand that we are only concerned about the care of your dogs. And we do tend to voice our opinions, loud and clear in here. That doesnt mean that we are ganging up on you, just that we may disagree with something and will let you know. If it were up to me, I would re-write that contract to be a little more "doggy-friendly" and less bare-minimum of what the law allows. I say this only because there are some people out there who are dog-illiterate, and will think that this is considered proper care. "Legally allowed" and "proper" are often FAR from the same thing. I have had people ask me if it's ok to keep Border Collies in an apartment and walk them twice a day. Technically, it is. In reality, Borders need lots of room to run. I guess what I'm saying is that the people who buy your dogs may not know anything about dogs. Sometimes you gotta train them....the people, as well as the dogs!
8. Good Lord...that police force gets more wonderful every day.... I wonder if these guys drink on duty??
9. Goo, this NOT a good idea....these people may not like dogs, may be afraid of dogs, may be stressed.... I'm sure there is nothing you can do about your moms decision... can yu go away for a while? Maybe tell your mom that you're afraid of LEGAL issues if your dog bites? SHE is the adult, if something happened SHE would be held responsible..... See if she will put you up somewhere, a hotel, or a friends, ANYWHERE Stress the problem that if your dog bites, SHE's liable...
10. That's GOOD! Kids say the damndest things, at the worst times, and yet it's still SO FUNNY!! Remember the show "Kid's say the darndest things?" this would have qualified.... LOL things are quiet tonight. I'll let you all know if another barkfest breaks out.... LOL
11. OK since I suggested it - here's my "good story" When Kyle (my son) was a baby, I used to put him in my room and let hin crawl on the floor while I was getting ready. My cat (Isis) discovered early on that the door wouldnt close. the latch wouldnt kick in. One day, he opened the door and let himself in. leaving it open for Kyle to get out. I was in the bathroom, and he had never opened it before when Kyle was in there. Kyle crawled out, and headed for the stairs. Jarvis caught him on the edge of the stair and clamped his teeth on his "onesie" and wouldnt let go. I heard the dog bark, and then Kyle cry, and came running out to see what had happened. Kyle was "punching" Jarvis with his little baby fists and demanding to be let go. Jarvis held firm. I grabbed Kyle, praised Jarvis and gave him the dinner steaks as a reward. He probably saved my sons life - it was a full set of stairs he was heading for...... I was a new mom, and never made that mistake again. We can only learn from them, I guess.......
12. He'll be ok Luka, dont worry. He overfed himself and paid for it - sometimes that's the best treatment....He cant gain additional weight like that, it would take days of overfeeding to put on extra pounds. and ten pounds would take more than days....weeks most likely. Put his food somewhere where he cant get it. I know this is a dog forum, but I had to give up one of my cats because the doctor (wrongly!!) said my son was allergic to him. My friend took him in. She soon found out why I had "baby locks" on my cabinets. That cat could open/get into/ escape from any normal lock ever created. If you left a window open he would let himself out. I had the locks before I had the baby!! She put his food into a closet, and came home to find the bag torn open and food all over... When her children were born, the locks were already in place. You couldnt stop Isis from getting what he wanted.....
13. THIS IS HILARIOUS!! I'm glad I suggested it, although it was just a thought..... Keep the stories comin'!! I've never met a dog owner without a "story" of something their dog did. So, I'm changing the forum. We can still call it "horror stories" but GOOD stories are encouraged too!! :D I'm a natural troublemaker, y'know....
14. Because it's bad for the dog, or because you want it all for you?? LOL just teasing! :D
15. My mom did not like animals in particular, especially in the house. She was WAY too neat fo that. When we were kids, we kept badgering our dad to get us a dog. (Mine was immovable)..Finally he gave in and told my mom he was getting us a dog. She told him to get a "shedless" one, poodle or terrier, something like that. So he went to the breeder where I had worked over the summer, and came home with a 3 month old GOLDEN RETRIEVER!! (Shedless? lol) He and the breeder had been planning this for some time, I found out later. That pup, although purebred, was neither stud nor show quality. I had fallen in love with him and asked if I could work off his price. He had called my dad and that's how it all got arranged. Anywa, he pulls up in the station wagon and lets the golden out of the car, and he promptly throws up on the front yard...never did like cars, that dog...My mom just about fainted......lol throughout his years he: Chewed up the legs on the piano bench Peed on the Christmas Tree Managed to get out and wander around the neighborhood at least once a month, putting us all in a panic to find him. We'd come back and find him laying on the front porch, looking miffed that we werent there to let him in.... ate part of the carpeting (something spilled not noticed?) sorted through the laundry, found something he liked and would sleep on it whether it was clean or not was irrelevant....he'd pull clean clothes off the dryer, too. Not really horror stories to me, but my mom would swear up and down she would never have another animal in her house..... lol
16. I didnt know that Watchdog - thanks. So what kind of chocolate does have enough ot be dangerous? Like Fannie Mae's or something like that? "real" chocolate?
17. oohhh yea..... We ought to start a thread called "horror stories" and tell all our tales... :D
18. Maybe K, maybe.... However, the word "sulking" comes to mind here..... I'm always willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt - I'm with you on that. But if it were me, and I suddenly discovered that I was wrong, I would up and apologize and be done with it
19.
*mutters* at least your dogs didn't start chewing up your house! :-?
I had a malamute/bordie collie Mix (Jarvis) that chewed up my kitchen... I lived in a town house at the time, and when he was a puppie we confined him to the kitchen (tile floor) during housebreaking.... He decided he wanted out one day, couldnt get past the gate, so chewed up the side of the cabinet on the floor...(he had chew toys in there) chewed up enough of it that he could squeeze by the gate and get out.....
20. Tootsie-rolls are a hard, chewy chocolate rolled into "log" shapes. the logs have indents in them allowing you to break off pieces of the log and eat them little at a time. They take a long time to chew up. How big was it? Was it one of the giganto ones, or the little 3 inch long ones? And how long ago did he eat it? If you cant get the vet, and you're really concerned - you could give him a 1/2 teaspooon of syrup of ipacac - it's what they give kids who have swallowed something they shouldnt - it will make him throw up. But if it was only half on one of the small ones, I wouldnt be too concerned. You could also call Poison Control in your area. They may be able to give you the number for an emergence vet service, who will tell you on the phone exactly what you need to do. Good luck!
21. Kiger!! HELLO???? What happened to his leg/paw??? :o Enquiring minds want to know...... :D
22. OK that's it - mine are officially "Pestaciolli's" - modelled after "mostaciolli's" but specifically for dogs who CANT MAKE UP THEIR MINDS..... "Should I stay in? Should I go out? OK, I'm out, I want to come in. OK I'm in, I want to go out again......" ARRGGHHH!!!! I wish I had a doggy door! Of course, any door big enough to let them in/out would easily let the average small adult in/out as well...... LOL you gotta love 'em!! :D
23. The Ace is the way to go - providing he doesnt chew it off. The taping never sticks and it all unravels..... You cant use really secure tape because pulling it off pulls out the fur as well. The Ace should work. If he starts to chew you may need a "collar" though.... what happened to his leg???
24. I'm SOOO sorry, both Canary and Gigi - Can I help somehow? Both of my parents (and grandparents) are gone now, so I can sympathize..... My prayers are with you. Hope everything turns out ok for you.
25. LOL - you want a LAB experience too? They run off, they lick incessantly, the male cant drink without leaving a trail of water behind him.... all in all - I wouldnt give them up. I love them dearly. I might let you borrow them tho, just for the experience.... :D
