1. Both the nosie of the thunder and the static of the lightning bother them - as much as you want to, dont sympathize, or make a big deal out of it they responde to that as if you have praised their behavior, and then it becomes learned for attention. Bachs herbal calming remedies are good, you can also try putting her in her bed with a stern "lay down" command, and give her something to play with to distract her. Let her lay by you, and pet her, but dont tell her "its ok" and stuff like that. Just act like everything is normal, and she may get over it. Alot of how they react is in sync with how we react - are you afraid of storms??? If it's completely out of control, the vet may be able to prescribe something, but I am all for Bachs. :D
2. Thanks Cassie I do understand the motor skills/training and motivation behind what she does (I've had retrievers a long time) but I misunderstood what you said. "incurable" threw me I guess. While not normally aggressive towards people, she does not have the usual "happy go lucky I-love-everybody" attitude that labs and goldens are purported to have. I say purported because I think that particular breed standard is way over-emphasized, and can be dangerous to the unknowing dog owner. But my original golden had what his breeder called "natural soft mouth". I have seen him pick up a fallen bird and bring it to me without so much as a ruffled feather. I was told that is somewhat rare without training. Freebee ruffles, a lot. and although she has never kill-bitten, she does show the "it's mine dont touch it" kinda hunting attitude....although she always gives it up, I can tell she would rather keep it. Whether she would actually eat it or not I dont know....
3. She'll be fine Rowie - her hair wil grow back, probably thicker than before and she will look beautiful again. I'm glad the ticks are gone. The scabs and all will heal, she'll be ok. Just keep an eye out for infection while her hair grows back in. Glad she's all better!! :D
4. He NEEDS to be entertained, allright.....in a 6x9 jail cell, or a rubber room, with a straightjacket on....... surrounded by dogs of all kinds and not allowed to move or they'll bite..... :evilbat: sick bastard.....
5. Sorry. That's how it's SUPPOSED to work in the pack - but my dogs never really followed all the rules either, and most people's dogs dont. :D
6. Oh and Rott? as far as your "deep thought".... only if it's MY shoe!!
7. Cassie please explain your comment - Do you mean "incurable" as far as she might become dangerous, or just incurable as far as never being a bird retrieval dog? Shes never been trained to retreive, just kinda does it on her own.... she also points, and has never been trained, but I think she is part German Shorthaired Pointer, too....
8. She nailed a bird in the backyard..and a mouse earlier. When I took them away, they were pretty mangled.... I had to kill both of them. They would have been in pain otherwise. I WISH she would stop trying to hunt.... She doesnt kill them, just drags them around. Leaves that unpleasant task for me, after she's mangled them beyond saving... gggrrrrr.....
9. I hugged my girl, and made sure her heartworm medication was up to date. Thank you.... DAMN people who have dogs and dont bother to care for them....
10. I agree Sanvean - sometimes the police, or the local laws, look the other way. It's still not safe tho... Is your web name french, and if so, what does it mean? It's really pretty....
11. In most places in the states, riding in the back of a truck without seats or seatbelts is illegal. There are no laws covering dogs, but they should not be allowed to ride back there either, unless a harness can be provided to keep them safe. It's dangerous INSIDE the car without a harness, outside, there is nothing, no body of the car, to protect them if an accident occurs.
12. Chrissie, I'm ignorant and sorry, but what is TAZ?
13. This is the Foxhound I want - if he gets along with Freebee that is - called and left a voicemail for the foster parents - isnt he gorgeous???? he's been raied with other dogs, mostly foxhounds, so I want to check and see what his dominance level is (Freebee wont allow a dominant dog, she's just such a, well, bitch.....no pun intended
14. Both my dog and my cat will just let themselves in, if I dont latch the door....what IS IT about the bathroom that makes pets and kids HAVE TO BE THERE when you're in there??? My cat opened the door while my sons teenage friends were there - that's embarassing too....I got it closed right away but they still remind me of it....
15. Is the second loop about 2 feet from the clip? That's considered a training leash, for learning heel and sit, stuff like that. It gets you closer to the dog so you can control it better. It's not a bad idea for training, but sounds a little heavy for a puppy. I have two leashes (three actually) one 2-ft leash, one 6-foot leash and one of those silly "let the dog run" leashes that spins out from the handle and gives them about 10 feet of room...they all have different uses. Good luck with your new puppy! Glad you intend to have him/her trained! :D
16. I need to clarify this post If he will let you examine him, have someone sit on his right side behind his head, and wrap a towel around his muzzle. NOT TIGHT, just enough to have control Keep one hand on the end of the towel, holding it in place, and use the other arm to wrap around his head/neck to hold his muzzle in place. This is a safe alternative to a muzzle if the dog is gentle and willing to be examined, if NOT!! muzzle him immediately. This will keep his head in place so that if you hit a painful spot, he wont be able to bite. If you do hit a painful spot, he needs to see a vet.
17. was the truck moving at the time? or at a standstill? Check his paws, if he'll let you (a dog in pain may need to be muzzled to be examined - dont assume that because he is a golden he wont bite) If he is being good about it, just kinda squeeze lightly along his paws up til you get to his body, and have someone else there to hold his head with a towel. again, if in pain, they can bite, even mild-mannered goldens. If he has issues with this check, muzzle him, please! If you see him wince, or if he tries to break away from whoever is holding his head, then he is in pain and needs to see a vet asap. Dogs do not display pain the way we do. They can keep it all to themselves without you even noticing. If he is limping, or dragging, he is hurt. But if the pain is not severe, he may show no signs at all. That is why you need to check. He may be fine - they are a lot more athletic than we are, but you still need to make sure. good luck, and let us know how it goes :D
18. I missed the first one, I picked a dog that looked similar but wasnt the Pit Bull. The second one I got first try. Some of those dogs have floppy ears! I wish I could adopt the second one, he looks so cute
19. barking is a warning sign - informational - and only the lower members in the pack do it. Duke may not feel he is a low member, or, since he is a guarding breed, may feel that noise is unnecessary unless he feels threatened. Freebee only barks if a stranger comes to the door, otherwise she is really quiet. Alex wouldnt shut up - he barked at everything. And once he started, she would join in and it sounded like a barkfest here all the time (the neighbors dogs join in too) He may just feel secure in checking out the door. If he doesnt feel threatened, he might not bark. My old neighbors had a GSD, and it never barked (well, once in a great while) but if it suspected something was up, it would growl.... Also, wolves dont bark....not like dogs do. They make this silly "wooofffiinnnggg" sound, under their breath. Could he have wolf in him? I think he's fine - he may even start to bark when he gets older, and then you'll wish he would shut up!! LOL :D
20. gettin' kinda spoiled there....LOL If you dont want to break it up, then dont. Believe me, they'll eat it eventually, especially bacon....they wont let themselves starve, unless there is something physically wrong. :D
21. I have been searching Petfinder to look for a friend for Freebee, and the reason that they have so many "labs" is that they classify a large number of the as "lab mixes"...any dog that even looks remotely like a lab is considered a lab mix, because people are more willing to adopt them. That one pup may have had a lab parent, but it was definitely red-nosed Pit nonethe less. I know they want these dogs to get homes, and they do test them as much as possible at the shelters, but if someone adopts red-nose not knowing he is part Pit, and something bad happens, red-nose gets PTS....That's why I think that people should not adopt dogs without a small amount of testing. I had to fill out an application to even look at Theo, and then they wouldnt let me have him (I think because someone else wanted him) but the application is a good idea.
22. I set up the sprinkler and let Freebee play in it She loves it
23. Most of the big pet stores around here (Petco, Petsmart) only carry supplies, fish, reptiles and once in a while they will have birds that are brought in for adoption. They also hold dog and kitty adoptions there on weekends, they get sponsored by some of the area shelters. I have occasionally seen Ferrets and rabbits, but they stopped the whole rabbit thing because they kept being brought back. Oh yea, and Gerbils. People like Gerbils, they sell alot of those. But even their Ferret and Gerbil cages are set up like a natural environment, it was cool... I like the fact that they do adoptions there too.
24. He'll be ok Malamum - it's not a good idea to let him get all wound up with the big noise of a party, they dont like noise, and may respond badly to some of the guests. If he's used to being at your mom's, then this wont hurt him at all. . My malamute didnt like parties, or noise, and we had to put him in the basement when people were over. I always wished I had somewhere to take him..... Have fun!! Happy B-day to your B/F!! :D
25. she looks like my lab mix, who does the same thing. lays on her back looking all goofy and chasing her tail. She must feel very secure, most dogs wont willingly lay on their backs with their feet up in the air if they feel frightened...lol :D
