  1. SHARA!! Chill, please....what happened to Hazel was not your fault, and we know how much you agonized over every little bad thing....Dont let the people at SitStay make you feel that YOU are unworthy...your parents are not helping you with yur dogs, and because it's their house they will claim priviledge...it's not right, but it happens. You worked your ass off to help Hazel become a good, solid dog....you tried everything you knew...it just didnt work. That's not YOUR fault...but, as they say, shit happens.... Try to train Coal as best yu can, so he doesnt do anything to piss your parents off, and just kinda go with it. I know how hard it is - my mom didnt like my golden, and everythng he did wrong was MY fault.... He survived to 13....and when I moved out I took him with me. It's a long road Shara, but if you really want this to happen, you CAN DO IT... despite all the bad press and the fact that no one is helping u. This will make you stronger in the long run, trust me. Come here and we wil help you. PM me and I will help you, I promise.... let us know how it goes, ok? we are here for you! Katy
  2. yea, he is....he has an ego to match his size as well...he has a thyroid disorder; he'll never get any smaller, but with medication he wont get any bigger... doesnt matter to him, HE is King of the Hill, and any dog that wants to challenge him will pay the price..... even when he was small, no dog won the challenge. Both Freebee and Alex let him have his way, it was easier on them!! LOLOL
  3. vitamin E oil, works great for healing scars on people - but you need to check and see if licking it will cause a problem... Good luck!!
  4. thanks very much Marble for thinking of me....I have to find a submissive dog because Freebee is very dominant, and that makes the choices somewhat slimmer...but I am NOT giving up!! Thanks very much!
  5. they told me someone else adopted him....I can only go on the weekends, because of my work schedule, so he was gone before I got there.... :(
  6. could be Guest, could be a lotta things... does the 17 year old have issues with other family members? (dont ALL teenagers?) The dog may feel the child is out of line, especially if there is tension betweent he child and the parents....the dog may feel the child needs to be "put in his/her place" so as not to upset the parents... Dogs have been known to turn on teenagers that are giving grief to the parents, especially if they are more bonded to the parents than the child... there's a lot of things going on....only a real behavriorist could tell you... Dogs want the "pack hiearchy" to be in place, and followed by all... maybe the 17 year old is breaking that hiearchry is some way....
  7. yes, we would love pics - we are an addicted group of pic lovers... however, dont ask me for help - I am finding I am picture-posting illiterate.... LOL
  8. depending on the age of the dog, and when she was spayed, it could be both a dominance thing and prior learning. If unspayed (just FYI) they will hump to relieve sexual tension, hormones out of control, that sort of thing. in a young dog that is....if past 1 1/2 years, and spayed, then humping is dominance...Every dog/wolf in the pack is going to try to reign supreme over every other... the whole pecking order thing. And if they think they can go up another rung by putting another member down, they will do it. They may not challenge the Alpha, ever, but they will challenge each other. This is where small children become a problem with a "wannabe" dog...they dont understand, they dont know they are being challenged.....Personally, I would never leave a small child (and 5 is small) alone with any dog. Not saying that you did anything wrong, just a precaution. Even he "nicest" dogs in the world can turn on a child, if they are trying to move up in the ranks...I know I have said this before, so bear with me. There is a Golden Retriever here in the hood who bit off half of a childs face, because the kid had the dogs toy and he wanted it back - no one ever suspected this dog of being dangerous (Goldens never are y'know...this is a touchy subject with me) and the child is now disfigured for life. The kid was only 6 years old...and no one ever thought eh GR would hurt him.....but a dog is a dog is a dog - descended from wolves, and the pack instinct remains....I would suggest just not letting the dog and the snall children be alone together. and definitely dominate the dog if it shows humping and other dominance behaviours toward the children. It may never turn on you, but it has to understand that it is bottom of the pile, even around the small children. Best of luck - it's an easy thing to miss, since humping doesnt really hurt anybody - but it can (not always WILL, but CAN) lead to other unpleasant dominance behavior....
  9. I was also told no Tylenol, no Advil, no Excedrin, no Alieve....my vet will ok aspirin (childrens aspirin only) only after a kidney and liver analysis. Some dogs do ok with it, others have kidney/liver problems.

Ol Yeller made me cry really bad too...the poor dog saved their lives from the bear, and then had to be put down because of Rabies...I had nightmares about it...... Bambi didnt bother me so much - my mom had taught us that those were cartoons, and so not real, and Bambi didnt really die because he was never really alive....(after all three kids were in hysterics the first time we saw it - lol) but she couldnt do anything about Ol Yeller except tell us that they really didnt shoot him - it was just a movie..... Disney decided to change Bambi because it was basically a show for small children, and it was upsetting them very badly, so they made the new version....my son never saw the old version...it may be considered a collectors item now....
  11. VERY funny!! LOL here's another one, from a television skit A woman brings her two poodles into the vet (wheeled in in a baby carriage of all things...) complaining that the female is getting fat. The vet examines her, and pronounces her pregnant. The woman gets all upset and says "That's not possible - she hasnt been near any male dogs....!!!" The vet examines the other dog and says "Well, this one is male...." She gets very angry and says "YOUNG MAN!! Dont be disgusting!! That's her brother!!!"
  12. Mostly from books, experience, and a theme paper I did on wolves in College...... One of my favorite books is "Why Does My Dog....." by John Fisher.... it helps answer a lot of questions on why dogs act the way they do.

Angel, do you mean Ol Yeller or Turner and Hooch? they didnt actually shoot either dog, my question to Mei was that if this is something you dont do, kill an animal that is, then is that why they made a different version of Ol Yeller, where he doesnt get shot in the end? I have seen both versions of Ol Yeller, in the second one he dies in his sleep, I think.... There were two versions of Bambi, too. One where he dies and one where he doesnt....

Mei, what about "Ol Yeller?" in the original version of the movie (I'm old, I know - lol) they had to shoot him in the end.... is that why they made another version?

  25. ROFL@Pumpkin!!!! My dog is 75 lbs, so size of dog doesnt matter. Cats are cats, and they will assault any dog they think they can win over.... My cat is 15 years old, fat, not fast anymore, but when he says "JUMP" the dogs says "how high?" - it's just the funniest thing to watch....
