I've been bitten a few times. First time, think it was our dog Pepper who wandered over and got into a fight with the neigbors Irish Setter males, both of them. He didn't care, he jumped 'em both! Luckily a friend was with me, we got the dogs separated, I took Pepper (who was not supposed to be loose in the front anyway!) home. I had a bite on the back of my hand, cleaned it up and that was that. 2nd bite was at another time, the older male Irish Setter got really mad because he had to wait his turn to go outside, grabbed my bare foot and bit me hard. Please don't crucify me, I was MUCH younger at the time, I beat the crap outta him. Looking back and knowing what I know I can see where his aggression was 'allowed' to build and I was in the wrong place at the time. But when he literally savaged my foot, I saw red (also literally) and smacked him pretty darned hard upside the head. He lunged at me again, I clocked him again. He thought it over and decided to back off. Good thing cause I was ready to kill him. 3rd bite, my own fault, I was teasing my sheltie, she nailed in the nose, I said please let go of my nose sweetie and I will stop teasing you! She did and I did. She was not punished because I knew I brought it on. 4th bite was from Jesse. I was brushing his teeth, he did not like it. At one point he looked me dead in the eye and then bit down on my finger. Hurt like hell. I cuffed him LIGHTLY upside the head and told him if he bit me again I'd pop him again. He's never deliberately bitten me again. 5th bite, Jesse. Totally my stupidity, playing with him with a paper towel roll, got the brilliant idea to slip it over my fingers. DUH. He bit me to the bone. Of course no punishment to him for my dumbness. Heck there are probably more that I have forgotten about.

Brittany is an Australian Shepherd/German Shorthaired Pointer mix [img]http://members.toast.net/agilk9s/Brittany_in_the_yard.JPG[/img] I certainly don't know this for sure but I've been told that Candy is a mix of Yellow Lab and Jack Russell Terrier. Could be! There is definitely some sort of terrier in the mix.

Just an idea, would putting each animal is a separate crate in the same room do any good? Making sure of course that each crate is VERY secure, put them across the room from each other, ignore the rumbles and growls, ignore the animals, just sit in the room and read or play a game, IGNORE the animals. If/when the growls and grumbles subside, move the crates just a bit closer then again ignore the animals. I'm thinking if this is to work it will take some time, maybe more than one day. The idea is to very gradually move the animals closer to each other, ignore them till they decide its not getting them anywhere by snarling and growling at one another. I'm wondering if some quiet low key praise to both when they are BOTH quiet will help. I still would not trust them loose around each other for some time but perhaps this will help desensitize them to each other a bit.

Is this for real? Sounds just a bit fishy to me. If it is real, sounds like a horrible accident waiting to happen, also a HUGE lawsuit.

Science_Doc, I think that if the dog was smacked just once, not much hissing/spitting and certainly no biting, it would depend on the dogs personality more. JMHO, I feel this way because Jesse the Belgian is very cat aggressive. Years ago when we lived at home with my mom, there was a neighbors cat that would come over the fence to play and/or chase Jesse around the yard. Jesse was fairly young and seemed to enjoy Tom coming to visit. He would poke his nose at the cat until the cat chased him. [img]http://members.toast.net/agilk9s/Being_chased.JPG[/img] Tom was not declawed, as Jesse got bolder and closer, Tom nailed him a few times. I saw as Jesse became more and more aggressive towards Tom, actually trying to bite him. Luckily Tom's people moved soon and took Tom with them. My mom's cat does not care for dogs in HER house. She whacks them every chance she gets, will lie in wait and reach through the back of the dining room chairs. At first, Jesse would react as though killing her was the ONLY thing on his mind. The teeth would flash and the snarls were serious. However, he quickly realized that she was not 'stinging' him. She is declawed. With time and some work on our parts, his aggression has significantly decreased. He will actually stand there while she rat-a-tat-tats on his nose wagging his tail. He still pokes her with that nose, he wants her to get off her lazy bum and chase him!

Well, I MUST be on a nostalgia kick, found another old photo. This one is my brothers dog Snappy and my sisters kitten P.J. Snappy was a shepherd mix, born under a car at a lot. Mama dog was a stray that snuck in to have her babies. All the pups and mom found a home. My brother was 8 or 9 that year, Snappy was (of all things :D ) a Christmas present! Snappy may have 'belonged' to my brother but he gave his heart to my mom. He was with us for 14 years. P.J. was a Himalayan kitten, his life was not so long, he had a heart defect. Having had no experience introducing a pup to resident cats, I'll offer ideas anyway! :D Just some thoughts mind you. Do you cats come to you for attention? Are they affectionate with you? Perhaps when you first bring the pup in, just sit quietly with pup in your lap or arms, if cats approach give quiet praise to all. I would try to prevent pup from yapping at cats, they don't seem to like dogs yelling stuff at them. Take it slow, don't force the dog on them, let the cats take the lead. I would absolutely separate the dog from the cats when you will not be around to supervise. Do you already have a crate home for your little dog? This could be a safe haven for the pup to keep him/her from dangers. Being that the cats are declawed, they might be more inclined to bite the pup if they feel threatened or just put upon. Roo, I have mixed feelings about cats being declawed. My moms cat is declawed, she does not seem to really know it. Of course she is an indoor cat. She will stretch herself up on the couch or chair and 'scratch' away with a look of bliss on her face. She's doing no damage but satisfying that urge. When the dogs walk by as she's stretched out on a chair, she'll reach out and whack 'em with both paws, lightening quick. Scares the heck out of them each time. Jesse will poke his big nose in her face, she will smack him quite soundly while he stands there grinning. If she DID have claws, the first time she 'stung' Jesse, he would try his best to kill her.

Check out [url]www.petfinder.org[/url] for adoptable dogs in your area. They are (of course) not free but certainly far less than pet store (puppy mill) puppy or even a breeder. If your looking for a pet, petfinder might just have a dog for you! You might also want to try Yorkie and Papillon Rescue orgs, they might have adult dogs looking for new homes. Hi Jessica! Welcome to you and Frodo! Looking forward to hearing more about your adventures and seeing more pics of the pup. I have a special fondness for cairns, all because of one named Charlie. Many many years ago, perhaps 9? I was at a dog show with Jesse. It was an obedience trial, while waiting our turn we were just sprawling on the grass. Along came a lady walking a cocky little cairn boy. She stopped so the boys could sniff noses. Well they took a shine to each other, started playing. Charlie was a bit older than Jesse and intact but the boys got along just fine. Jesse of course towered over Charlie, so I convinced him to lie down. He stayed down, he and Charlie did some playful face fighting, then Charlie proceeded to climb all over Jesse, literally walking on his side and shoulder. Jesse thought it was a hoot. The lady who owned Charlie took some photos and promised to send me some but alas I never did get any. But back to Jessica and Frodo! Bet you're enjoying that pup immensely!

I forwarded the link to my belgian list, hopefully we'll get more yes votes! There is a raging discussion going on with the belgian people right now, many were not aware that not all shelters required animals to be spayed or neutered before leaving. Heck even the SPCA in Richmond which does require it before adoption allowed me to foster Candy without her being fixed first. She was old enough to have come in season and either snuck under the fence or had a fella visit.

I have to agree with Anne, this is NOT cute. It actually is irresponsible in my mind, while I hope real steps are being taken to curtail this escaping by Tessa, Aroura thinking it's cute is kinda bothers me. Lets be real, if no one here knew Aroura and she was a new poster, you'd be all over her for this. I know this may be too strong for some and I don't mean to just ruffle feathers first thing in the morning but I believe the dogs best interests have little to do with how cute one might think the dog escaping its yard is.

Congrats on your new pup! I also suggest you contact his breeder to check on his puppy feeding requirements. I bet he is tiny right now! As far as the water bowl, are you currently using a stainless steel bowl or a plastic bowl? Stainless is better in that in can be thoroughly washed/sterilized but some dogs are afraid of their teeth touching the steel or the shimmer of the water in a shiny steel bowl. When Jesse BSD was younger, he had crooked teeth in the very front that would 'ping' on a metal bowl and he freaked out each time. I had to use a heavy plastic bowl for him. The girls are ok with metal bowls. Also, you've only had your pup 1 day? He might just need a little more time to settle in and relax, probably will be better about eating and drinking after a while. Maybe I'm working too hard but I clip a bit off then use the dremel to round off the nail and smooth it out. A word of caution, keep ALL long hair, yours AND the dogs away from the dremel! :lol: I'm speaking from experience here! Jesse has long feathering on his front legs, I wrapped his hair around the spinning dremel one night. The dremel stopped, didn't hurt him but it startled the heck outta me. You can slip an old nylon knee high over the dogs leg to keep long hair away, better tie your own up.

It almost frightens me that I totally agree with something PETA endorses! :D I have cast my yes vote! The only exceptions to this that I can think of are babies simply too young or animals that are too weak or undernourished to tolerate the surgery until they are stronger.

ooo-whee, look at them paws! Paws just made for slapping the boy dogs that get fresh. A VERY pretty girl! First thing to mind was Seeker, I also like Sheba. Don't feel too rushed in naming her, sometimes its better to wait and she will tell you her name.
