What does Roan mean?

I just got a new Cocker Spaniel and on her papers it said under color that she is "roan" what does that mean? What is the different between Parti color and roan?

Hi! I don't know if this is the same thing or not, but have you ever seen a blue roan or a red roan horse? Well, their hair is several different colors mixed together. They have a light, medium and dark color. My pup has white, gray, and black hairs (she is registered as a merle). He named is Roaney because of this. I guess with different breeds they call it different things. What does your dog's coat look like?

i'm pretty sure it is when one color, like brown, red, black, gray, etc. are mixed in with white hairs, not in patches or spots, but the actual hairs are mixed.

My dog is white with large patches of color that are siver with just a little black and tan. She has white legs with very small tan spots, just above the eyes she has red.
To me I would call her a "parti" color but am not sure what the different between Parti and roan are.
