1. I use the citronella ones too they are very good especially the new version! Bec
2. Snowdogs, believe me not everyone who breeds cross breeds does it for money. I know some and they take as much time and care in breeding their dogs as I do and I've never even made a small profit on the litters I've had. RR, I agree anyone can set up a club the same as anyone can breed but surely it is better to have a club and try to makl an effort than people breeding willynilly? Rosebud, define a fully functional dog please. With regards to lack of uniformity of type in your breed then blame modern breeders. They are the ones defining the breed today, breed standards are so open to interpretation that people see different things hence different type. It happens in every breed I don't see why that should be an exclusion for 'new breeds'. Bec
3.
Yes, purebred dogs were originally crosses. But Bec, this is the 21st century, most of those purebreds are now recognized by the AKC.
I think you'll find that the AKC does NOT accept MOST pure breeds of dog. The KC here in the UK accept more and the FCI even more. Besides, why should new breed creation be considered a thing of the past? The Cesky Terrier is a fast becoming popular little dog, recently created. It has achieved recognition by the KC and FCI so in time will be accepted by the AKC. Maybe you ought to have words with the breeders of these 'mutts' as their dogs haven't had the centuries of development that others have? Bec
4.
Bec, if you still believe that the "breeders" of MIXED BREEDS are just trying to be nice and make a new breed that people will love, then look at this little guy who is sitting in the shelter now. Simply because his owners didn't want him any longer. If the breeders of this dog were responsible, they would have taken him back. But if they were really responsible, this dog never would have been bred and he wouldn't be sitting there with no home right now. Bec
5. Mouse, just because a book states that it can be traced back to the Han Dynasty doesn't mean it is nor that it has been pure bred since then. These comments are made based on carvings and statues which are claimed to be the origins of many many breeds, I know I have the books to prove it. Rosebud, you stated why breed these crosses at all, why breed any dog at all? Do you really think that african tribesman kept their lines 'pure'? With regards to functionality I suppose that's difficult to define. If they are being bred as companions then that is their function. Yet again another one who believes that EVERYONE who breeds crosses do so for money. This isn't always the case the same as not every pure bred breeder does so for money. Some do some don't. Breeding crosses does not affect pure breeds at all. If you believe it does please explain how? Rottnpitt, I do see the probelms when people breed for money but I make no distinction, like yourself, as to whether they breed pure or cross breeds. No dog should ever be bred for money fullstop. If someone wants to put the time and effort in to create a new breed and offer all that a responsible reputable breeder sghould do with regards to their puppies then there is no problem. Crested, stray dogs increase because of irresponsible breeders and owners not responsible ones. Efforts should be concentrated on educating these people. Exactly how do you think the Chinese Crested came into being without crossing breeds? Do you have any evidence to prove that the Chinese Crested is NOT inbred. I'd be interested in reading it. Exactly how many dogs do you think the current stock of chinese cresteds stems from? Bec
6. Sorry Hobbit, didn't mean you!! I meant the Royal you :D! Crested, Why is crossing to breeds a disaster? Exactly how do you think EVERY breed came into existance today? How inbred do you think Chinese Cresteds were in order to get the hairless gene stabilised? Is that responsible breeding? Encyclopedia, many people who are attempting to establish these 'crosses' as a new breed do have a background of pure bred dog breeding behind them. I agree that if you want a hypoallergenic dog get a poodle. Yes many many people breed crosses for money but so do many pure bred breeders. Mouse, the Sharp Pei is a relatively 'new' breed. Do you reallty think the breeders in China stuck with stiking Shar pei to shar pei? No they used the best dogs they could find and eventually established a type. They must have chow in their somewhere because of the coloured tongue. Rosebud if you want to stop dogs being bred for money then get a law passed to make it illegal to sell them in pet shops. That would stop most of the commercial breeders in their tracks. I'd be right behind you on that one. Yes responsible breeders do have homes lined up and offer lifetime advice etc but that isn't confined to pure bred breeders either. Lucky, who are you to say we have enough. Since when is it your decision to make a statement like that. In you opinion yes there may be but others may not think the same. RR I suggest you take a good look round the net. In America there are 2 clubs for Cockerpoos. One appears to be far more responsible than the other so there are people trying to do it properly. Prairie Gurl, every breed around today was started from scratch so it is, therefore, not impossible. Athenix do you know how hard it is to get even a breed that comes from another country 'recognised' if it isn't already so. Most of the Kennel Clubs of each country require a huge amount of generations and breed standards etc set before even considering it so I think it highly unlikely that people will be requesting that this crossed with that to be recognised. Starfox, is there any good reason to breed any animal? Bec
7.
Bec --- the reason so many people are against the crossing and calling it a NEW breed, is because --- it takes LONGER than 63 days for a breed to be established. YEARS of perfection, selective breeding and genetic manipulation to be able to consciously call the mixture of two breeds, a NEW breed.
I entirely agree but you shouldn't tar everyone with the same brush. If someone wants to put the time and dedication in that is required to create a new breed then good luck to them. It's not responsible breeders who's dogs end up in rescue (and if they do they will try to get them back) it's the irresponsible that should be condemned whether they breed pure bred or otherwise.
8. Please explain more why you believe that these breeds have 'no business' being created? Why not? Surely as long as the health and temperament of the dogs is utmost in peoples minds and all breeding stock is tested for the relevant hereditary disorders applicable then it doesn't really matter. If someone wishes to create a new breed (as people have done such as the Cesky Terrier which is now an internationally recognised breed and is basically a mix of Sealyham and Scotty terriers) then let them. Yes money is a motivational factor but so is the breeding of pure bred dogs for some people and huge numbers of pure breeds are bred without thought and consideration. You should be condemning everyone who breeds purely for money regardless of what they chose to breed because it is the money grabbers that fill the rescue centres not the beautifully raised dogs (regardless of pedigree) where the breeder gives a lifetime of help and support and will take the dog back for whatever reason. Bec
9. Contact the College of Animal welfaer. They do many dog courses and are based at Wood Green Animal Shelter in Cambridgshire. The course are from a day course to longer depending what you want to do. The more of these types of courses you have under you belt the better your chances are of beating others as many many people want to do what you do. Get the dog papers, Dog World and Our Dogs as live in positions are advertised in there. Or you can do what i did and set up your own business! Good Luck Bec
10. Apparently it's been withdrawn in America but not Canada! Bec
11. There is a petition set up to get Nike to withdraw this advert as it portrays a Rottie and Pitbull facing up to each other. http://www.petitionpetition.com/cgi/petition.cgi?id=5531 Bec
12. Actually there are longhaired Dalmatians! see http://www.geocities.com/~paisleydals/color.html Bec
13. Have to agree with Hobbit here. To produce the quantity that are around today must have involved 'other' factors. To establish any line takes a minimum of 5 generations which is equivalant to 10 or more years. The breed has only been around (according to your figures) for 35 years. That's a small amount of time in the big scheme of things. Presumeable, then, the dogs that are being bred are being registered as Australian Shepherds as they are 'pure bred'? Bec
14. It'll be 14 at the end of the year have a Schapendoes coming from Finland! Then that's it until youngest is old enough (or suitable enough) to have babies probably when she's about 3. I like to leave my pups until they have had one season to make sure everything is functioning OK. However, Tala, the poodle in question, has deformed 'bits' so I really want to make sure there are no other problems with her. I don't actually think she will ever have a season so when she hits 2 and no seasons she will be done! Bec
15. Sorry to hear of your loss but remember he is at the bridge waiting for you when your turn comes. Bec
