  1. I give people who foster dogs a lot of credit. I really don't think I could do it. I know I would have a real hard time letting go of the dogs I had fostered, as I get so darn attached so quickly. But I'm sure glad that there are people who foster dogs, as both of my rescue dogs were fostered at homes with other dogs, so I got a good idea of how they were in a home setting.
  2. I took my two dogs to the barn today to see my horse, and we stopped at the car wash on the way (the kind where you sit in the car while it's stopped). Maya was a little concerned, but Jackie jumped in the front seat and almost into my lap! That was REAL scary! Maya is afraid of the hose when it's turned on. If it's just laying there, she's okay, but if there's water coming out, she's outta there!

    Show Update

Congratulations on a great show! He's just gorgeous! Thanks for sharing the pictures.
  4. Abbie sounded like a wonderful girl, and a great friend. Hopefully she met up with my Golden Retriever, Cracker, up in doggie heaven.
  5. She was a beautiful girl! I hope she had a happy birthday up in doggie heaven.
  6. Why did Hazel have to get a haircut? It looked like she had a beautiful coat in the snow picture. Did she have mats or something? One of my Golden mix girls, Maya, had to have mats cut out of her before I got her, including her tail, but it's all grown back great, and her tail is getting bushier.
  7. I'm so terribly sorry for those of you who lost your beloved dogs to the ProHeart6 shot. Before I knew of the controversy regarding the shot, both of my dogs got the ProHeart6 heartworm shot (about a month ago), and luckily they have had absolutely no reaction whatsoever, and are running, playing, eating, pooping and peeing just like before. After hearing all these terrible stories, at the end of the six-month period I think I'll go back to the monthly chewable heartworm preventative. I was lucky with my dogs, but I don't want to take a chance if I have a choice. Thank you all for sharing your heartwrenching stories of your dogs' reactions and deaths from the shot. You have my deepest sympathies for your losses.
  8. I don't know what he is, but he's gorgeous!
  9. Skidboot was absolutely amazing! That was the coolest thing I've ever seen a dog do. I'm still trying to keep my dogs from excavating in the back yard!
  10. I always say "Jackie Girl" for Jackie, so I guess that's her last name. Maya is in her terrible two's, so sometimes her middle name is "quit" or "down" or "leave it." But when she's being good she's "Maya Girl."
  11. When I adopted Jackie, the name the rescue shelter (who had her for about four days) had given her was Ashley. My dad said he didn't like the name Ashley, so we had to come up with a different name. When I was a kid, every dog we had was named Sandy, and I figured we didn't need to continue on with that tradition. My last dog was a once-in-a-lifetime Golden Retriever name Crackerjack's Prize (nicknamed Cracker), so I named her Jackie in honor of him. Maya was already named when I adopted her, and she had been an owner-surrender, so that had been her name all her 1-1/2 years, so I kept it.
  12. Cool name! I adopted Jackie in February 2002, and decided that she needed a sister, so I adopted Maya in October 2002. They fell asleep on the same sofa the first night, and have been best friends ever since! I found both of them on Petfinder too. It's kind of like internet dating. I saw their pictures and fell in love! Here's a collage of Jackie and Maya's very first day together. 13. Thanks, Lukapop. I rode western for about 20 years, and switched over to hunters and jumpers about 15 years ago (jumpers being my preference). Now I have a 5 year-old gray Appendix Quarter Horse mare who I have great hopes for to be my next jumping star. I've been out of the show ring since 1997, which was the last year Lena could be shown. I'll be re-entering the show ring doing the baby hunters with my green mare.
  14. I have two wonderful puppygirls, both Golden Retriever mix rescues. They're best friends, and they're MY best friends!
  15. Hopefully it's okay to post a memorial to my horse. Due to severe leg injuries, I had to have her put down on November 1, 2002. She was a very talented, athletic jumper with great potential to take me as far as I wanted to go in showjumping. And she had a heart of gold. She was like a big (huge) puppy dog, and loved getting kisses and hugs. I'll miss her always. 16. Holz, I just found this information in another post. I got the wrong information previously. You need 50 posts for a second paw. 1 paw - more than 20 posts 2 paws - more than 50 posts 3 paws - more than 100 posts 4 paws - more than 500 posts 5 paws - more than 1000 posts
  17. So did you go to Sweden to get your new dog yet? Pictures, pictures!
  18. My dogs like to smell their pee and poop, but luckily they don't eat it! EWWWWWWW!
  19. I love that! And it's oh so true.
  20. I'm addicted too! I looked, and you need 40 posts for your second paw. I'm getting close! I pretty much just check out the message board now when I log in.
  21. The first time I took Jackie swimming, she was having fun wading around in the shallow water, but she wasn't quite sure about actually swimming. Then I started swimming right next to her, and she would swim wherever I went. Then she decided it was really fun!
  22. One of my rescued Golden-mix dogs, Maya, is deathly afraid of the hose, and I think I might have a good idea why. She was an owner-surrender, and her previous owners kept her tied outside for 8 hours a day, and she would bark all the time. As she was only 1-1/2 when I adopted her, she was (and still is) a puppy and had lots of energy. My guess is that they sprayed her with the hose to try to get her to shut up. Now that she has an older (by six months) "sister", Jackie, and a fenced yard, she can run around and play as much as she wants and she's a great dog! So there will be no cleaning Maya off with the hose, that's for sure!

    Blue tongue

Here is a picture of Maya, my Golden Retriever/Husky mix, showing off the blue spot on her tongue. I call it her birthmark. 24. Here is a picture of the hole that my girls, Jackie and Maya, dug next to the house. castration

I'm definitely no expert, but I also think that the vet is wrong in saying to wait to have the dog neutered. I've had horses for most of my life, and there is the same type of myth that if you wait to geld a stallion, that he will get taller or bigger when, in fact, the opposite is true. The longer you wait to have a male dog neutered, the more testosterone you'll have to deal with.
