I had always heard good things about the Chicken Soup food and previously fed my dogs Diamond which is the same company that makes the Chicken Soup food so I figured I'd switch them over to that. The ingredients seemed fine to me. As for a Barf diet, that I cannot do as my mother is pertified of the dogs getting worms or some nasty disease from eating raw foods. Ihad Spirit on it for all of 2 weeks and then I had to discontinue it because my mom will not allow it and I do live with her. I think when I get back from my mini-vacation I will take her to a different vet just to see what they say. Sounds gross, but I have sniffed her myself and and the odor is not coming from her behind, it's concentrated in her vaginal area which is why I wanted my vet to take a sniff.

It started about 2 years ago so not right after she was spayed. She too is a little overweight, needs to lose 4 pounds. But this has been going on regardless of her weight. I do like those new doggy bath wipes they've since made and those make it much easier. I just wish I could be rid of the smell, it kills me! And it makes me mad that vet isn't taking it seriously. I asked him to do a swab just to see if it was infection-related, but he just writes it off as anal gland even though the smell does not come from her behind. He won't sniff! Maybe I'll try a different vet and get a second opinion.

 Poor Spirit, she'll be so embarrassed by this! First let start with I have taken her to the vet about this "problem" before and he found nothing wrong, just told me to keep the hair clipped away from her female area and keep it clean. Well, I do this and her "problem" is still there. She is spayed and has been since she was 6 months old, now is 3 years old. Her problem is that she smells fishy "down there". The vet is convinced it is anal gland leakage, but it doesn't smell the same to me. This smells like rotten fish! She can stink up the entire car with that fishy smell on short trips and let me tell you that trips with her to Virginia are not pleasant with that stench! On advice of some I changed her food to Chicken Soup which she loves, but there is no change in odor. She is bathed quite frequently, at least twice a month and her "area" is washed often too. I have noticed that when the odor is really strong my other dogs take a keen interest in that area and Kara will (this is just nasty!) lay there and just lick it forever until I pry her away from that area of Spirit. Then she has fishy breath! What else can I do! People notice her "smell" and I really would die of they thought it was coming from me! My coworkers have commented on the odor too, so it's not just my imagination and they agree that it doesn't smell like anal glands. Suggestions please!

I have alot to go through so bear with me! Scruffy (bridgekid) - He was a scruffy little dog when I bailed him out of the shelter and looked like a mini version of the Old English Sheepdog I grew up with, her name was Scruffy so I named him that too. Alex (bridgekid) - My parents got him when I was a kid, he came with the name. Snickers (bridgekid) - My brother namen him that because he had the colors of the candy bar. Monty - Named after Monty Python. Heidi - Her name was Sara Lee at the shelter, but my mom preferred Heidi because she is german herself. Rookie - My brother named him because he is a rookie cop himself. Spirit - named in memory of Snickers. I was playing with calling her either Rainbow (as in the Rainbow Bridge) or Spirit. I chose Spirit and her full registered (AMBOR/UKC) name is Snickers' Evil Spirit In The Sky. Kara and Kyra - was flipping through a pet name book and these 2 appealed to me. Their former names were Tabby and Paja, didn't quite like those. Plus I like how their names sound alike! Mystic - I wanted to incorporate Spirit's name into her registered name and was deciding between Pagan Spirit (Pagan) and Mystical Spirit (Mystic). Well, Mystic won out because that is more "politically correct" than the other name! Sure would have loved to name her Pagan though! Another dog I will!

Aww, thanks for that - it's very much appreciated! Now I just have to keep an eye out for the next dog I can save and rehome!

Puppies are easier to foster, even little tiny ones that you have to keep till they weigh enough to fix. Usually, by the time that comes I'm quite thrilled to see the little buggers get adopted and leave my house! The adults seemt to have much more of a personality shall we say. They are easier to get attached to. A puppy is a puppy is a puppy, to me they are pretty much all cute and the same until they start developing and becoming the dogs they will be. Give me puppy to foster any day, it's much easier to let them go! There was something really special about this girl, I hope her new family will love her as much as I do! I couldn't have asked for a better application and a nicer family - they even drove in 2 separate cars from an hour away so that they wouldn't stress her by throwing her in the same car as their puppy for the trip home, now that's planning! The other applications I had on her were okay, but nothing special. All of them had something "wrong" with them, in my opinion. She wasn't cat friendly and some people with cats still wanted her, some people didn't want to train her, some wanted to keep her outside mostly during the day, etc. I wanted to adopt the whole shelter to this family, they were that impressive!

I adopted her out today to a really nice family with 4 kids and a 5 month old Aussie mix (who will be spayed next month). They were great with her and she took right to them, didn't even glance back at me when they walked out the door :( . She let one of their girls lay on her side when she was taking a break and they looked so natural like that, it was really a "kodak moment", but I had no camera! They are very willing to train her and she and their pup got along great, took turns herding each other. I'm just so sad to see her gone, I cried on the way home from work. I already miss her, she'd lay right by my feet when I was on the computer and just watch me. I only fostered her for 2 weeks and she made such an impression on me. I've had fosters before for 2 months and I was never as sad to see them go as I am right now. If things were different, she would have had her home right here with me. She is one special dog and I know she's going to just love her new family. I knew she'd be adopted quickly, but even this morning when I was getting her ready for this family to see her, I still thought she'd be sleeping by my bed tonight. Wasn't really expecting them to take her home, I guess. I had renamed her Cozie and was calling her Cozie Shyloh. I wonder what they will name her? I gave them my e-mail address so they can send me updates and pictures, they said they would. She's just the hardest foster to let go.

I've seen one, a friend of the family bought a show quality female last year that she hopes to show and breed one day. She was a beauty and I saw her when she was about 4-5 months old. Lots of people thought she was a saluki, but nope.

I just posted an update over there and it seems we lost another puppy (although she was 6 months old) under similar circumstances. I just don't know what's going on, maybe a new strain of parvo? I just hope we don't lose any more than those 2, I really loved that Basset girl her adopters are just crushed. They only had her from tuesday til friday but they truly loved her already.

My poor Scruffer-butt, that's the birthday I picked for him as I adopted him Dec. 20 and he was 8 months old. He was an awesome dog, I still miss him but he's better off at the Bridge, the last year was really hard for him. Yep, Rumble is Mystic's uncle - 1st litter whelped by his sister. It's coming up on a year that he's been gone.

Here's where I ordered them from, they aren't very expensive either. http://www.raspberryfield.com/index.html

I'm glad everyone likes it so much! I can't believe I thought to get her a vest like that, but I'm glad I did! I just ordered one for Kara too. Hers will say: Top - Kara I Save Lives, I'm Spayed Left side - Prevent a Litter Fix your critter Right side - It takes BALLS to neuter your pet! Can't wait till I get that one, hers will be yellow. When Mystic is nearly done growing I'll get her one too!
-
I ordered a service dog type of vest for Spirit and had some custom embroidery done on it by the company I got it from. Turned out great! Now she can wear this to Petsmart and the dog park and it speaks for me! I even had it made with zippered pockets so I can out some handouts in there. Yes, they can have puppies (dogs don't know about incest like people do), but they should NOT have puppies as inbreeding this closely brings out the absolute worst genetics. Puppies produced from a breeding like this will have temperament, behavioral, and major health issues. My Keeshonds are examples of this, one of them Kyra has a horrible temperament and their parents were half-brother and sister (had the same father, but different mothers). I wouldn't wish a dog like her on anyone. NOT a good idea to allow this to happen!

Kind of... there are still BYB of Shilohs as in any breed and this foster likely came from one as she is pet quality and was not spayed. They have lesser chance of inheriting hip dysplasia as it's not as common in Shilohs as it is in GSDs. Plus they are much more laidback, calm dogs too for the most part, some are quite driven.
-
I know, I just love looking at her! She is so pretty and shiny now that I've groomed her. It was 3 hours of hard work, but well worth it. She didn't complain at all, just licked me alot! She is amazingly well-tempered and so calm, just like Mystic. She really just likes to lay around the house. Here's a link to her own page, I added more pics to it and info. It's too bad your dad isn't "allowed" to have her, she'd be a great friend. http://www.fuzzybutts.com/shylohspage.htm I changed the address to her page so be sure to look at this one. She is really going to be hard to let go!

My Shiloh Shepherd, Mystic is from a breeder and a great one too! She is helping me rehome my foster Shiloh which is not from one of her breedings. Mystic is my first well bred breeder purchased puppy, all my others are rescues.

ME ME ME!!! I have 2 Keeshond sisters that I adopted from an all breed rescue March 2002. They were 6 months old then and are now 1 1/2. Kara and Kyra are their names. They had been purchased from a horrid breeder in Michigan (if you know much about bad Kees breeders, you'd know this one!). Below are links to their pages on my website, fuzzybutts.com http://www.fuzzybutts.com/kyrapage.htm http://www.fuzzybutts.com/karapage.htm There is also a link to their pedigree and you will see that they are inbred, their parents had the same father, just different mothers. You can read more about them on their pages.

She actually weighs 80 pounds, not 90, and had some "liposuction" done along with her spay yesterday! Apparently, her uterus was extremely large (larger than normal) and was surrounded by lots of fat so the vet removed the fat along with the uterus and she's probably even lighter than 80 pounds now. She's an awesome dog, I hope she gets adopted fast so that I don't get terribly attached, although I already am! She's a much easier dog than I thought she would be! She's been doing great with my dogs and still is fine with them even though she's not feeling too hot right now from the spay - makes me wish she'd been done by her former owner at 6 months, much easier on them! Shyloh is getting along very well, I simply adore this girl! After 3 hours of grooming last night she is now shiny and nice smelling! I had to cut away her front leg feathers, they were just caked with mud! She is being spayed as I write this, I have to go back to work later tonight to pick her up. They had no surgeries scheduled today and since her spay will take a long time they figured we should just do it today. Heartworm negative and she got her interceptor. She'll be microchipped today too. She has found that beds and couches are extremely comfortable! She slept by my bed last night (didn't crate her) and this morning she leaped onto the bed when I woke up to lick me to death! She absolutely LOVES little Mystic, thinks she's the greatest thing since sliced bread. They romped around this morning and Mystic got her to play with a ball that they shared. She won't play with toys on her own. Then they took turns licking each others mouths and faces. Maybe she knows that Mystic is a Shiloh too since she doesn't play with the others like that? She likes to chase Miles in the yard and really moves fast, but not as fast as him. And now Shyloh doesn't want to go outside at all! I had to go out with her this morning to get her to potty! It's like she has realized how nice it is to be inside and doesn't want to lose that privilege! Poor mixed up girl! Everyone at work thought she was just beautiful! I kept her in the grooming room we have and she was so quiet and just slept all morning. She clacks her mouth alot especially when she's being petted, not sure what that's about! She doesn't much like treats, prefers being petted so that will be my reward for her during training. She just craves attention and relishes being loved! She makes me want to cry just because she seems SO happy to be in a home and getting love and attention. This morning she wouldn't eat her food unless I was nearby - she wanted to make sure I wasn't going to just leave her. It breaks my heart! I think that woman rehoming her is the best thing that's ever happened to this dog, she can now have a real life! She did chew away a corner of my backseat and chewed the seatbelt in half, but I don't care about the car seat, it's fixable. It's the dogs' car anyway so I don't care! Shyloh has just grabbed at my heart since I saw her online ad. I knew I had to get her and even though I can't keep her, I know that she will get plenty of love and attention now. I just can't see how people can keep their dogs like that, it's so sad for them. I'll take more pictures of her tomorrow and post them. Her former owner has said it had been awhile since she'd been brushed because she wouldn't sit still long enough to brush her. Well last night I had her laying at my feet while I spent about 2 hours brushing her and clipping fur away without any problem, she never moved except when I moved her. She's already very focused on me and just wants to please me which just shows her resilient nature.

She's like a 90 pound puppy because she just doesn't know anything, never been trained. I live in southwest Ohio, but my dad lives in Northern Virginia (Ashburn, near Leesburg/Reston/Herndon) and I'm visiting him later this month. She did great overnight and I think I can crate her tonight - she was very bouncy this morning and happy to see me! Lovely, lovely girl!
-
Her name is Shyloh, but I'll be changing it. I'm not actually keeping her for myself, although I'd love to! I will be placing her for adoption through work and will be screening applicants for her. I imagine I won't have her for long, Shilohs tend to get adopted fast.

A week ago I saw an online ad for a free to good home (unspayed) Shiloh Shepherd located about an hour from my house. Well...... I went and got her today! The owner was given her when she was a puppy and does not know who the breeder is/was. She has been an outdoor (chained up) dog since she was 7 months old and she about 3 1/2 years now. I'll be getting her spayed as soon as I comb out all her mats and bathe away all the mud caked to her. She looks a lot better than I feared! Her temperament is outstanding! She doesn't seem to like female dogs (might be from being intact?) but she tolerates Mystic and Spirit because they are very submissive. She doesn't want to come in my house so I guess I'll have her sleep on the deck tonight and work on crate training her tomorrow. She's going to be an awesome pet for someone! I know that I just gets my feathers ruffled a bit when there is talk of breeding more Labs. I work for a humane society and we ALWAYS have Labs or Lab mixed available. Right now we only have one purebred Lab and about 6 or so mixes. But a little while ago we had 3 purebred Yellow Labs, 2 impounded from a puppy mill and the other an owner turn in. 2 were adopted and one was euthanized. The county shelter ALWAYS has at least 2 or 3 purebred Labs, too many mixes to count. I believe there is a saying that big, black dogs are always the last to be adopted and the first to be killed. Here's something to support that: "There are 2 adolescent black lab females who are being put down at Wayne County Humane Society tomorrow 5/30/03 for no other reason than they are black dogs.....and it is harder to place black dogs.....any ideas...." These dogs are in Ohio and are purebred black Labs. There have been as many as 13 ads in the paper for purebred Lab puppies. In Ohio they seem to be everywhere and impregnating everyone (along with Chows, they also are busy populating the world with their offspring!). I have a friend who has a show quality yellow Lab female that is almost finished, she is OFA'd and everything. She spent alot of money getting a dog of show quality, showing her and training her but, she isn't sure she wants to breed her because of all the Labs already here. She may end up being spayed soon after she gets her Ch. There are plenty of purebred Labs everywhere I look that I just don't see a need to be adding more unless they truly are being created to better the breed. Just because some friends want a puppy from a dog isn't a good enough reason to me to breed a dog. But that's only my opinion and it would be the same no matter what the breed of dog. I would just tell those friends to go to the shelter and adopt a Lab or Lab mix. There's no guarantee that all the puppies in the litter will be just like the mom. And with them having huge litters I don't think I would even know enough people to each take a puppy without having to resort to selling to other people. But that's just my take on it. If it were a rarer breed and she was a finished champion and had all the necessary health clearances and would be contributing a great deal to the breed then I would feel better about it and wouldn't see anything wrong with her being bred as it would be done for positive reasons that were beyond just what the breeder wanted.
