1. It probably is a swear word koolie!! My dog has his "tantrum" bark that he uses when he's having, well, a tantrum eg. when he's hyper and I go inside (and then he bites my ankles), or when we're in the car going to the dog park and he thinks it's taking too long "are we there yet? are we there yet?", or when I pat another dog and ignore him... it's funny  anyone else's do that?
2.  it's too bad, K, when there are no bite marks! (but lots of sneaky chop-licking and a full belly  )
3. hmm sounds like another new member who plans to be on the attack guests bandwagon
Hmm, sounds like the guest who attacked me for being "new" (because I have SO much control over that) and also jumping on the so-called "attack guest" bandwagon- I don't believe there is one but if guests continually get at people then they're going to react... (not meaning to offend the nice guests!!) Isn't the purpose of this board to discuss dogs in a friendly fashion?
4. What about this classic: I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, you can't prove anything! (from a dog who thinks he's Bart Simpson)
5. Hi Bensam, it's good to see another Aussie on here :D (even though you joined before me!)
6. I don't have any expert advice to offer BUT...for all you arachnophobes: http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/spider/pholcus1.html The daddy-long-legs spider... "eats mostly other spiders. One of the spiders it eats is the much larger hairy funnel-web spider. So if you hate spiders, take a daddy-long-legs spider as a pet!" As for them being the most poisonous spiders, check out this page: http://spiders.ucr.edu/daddylonglegs.html It's really interesting and debunks a few myths too  Horsefeathers, we don't have funnelwebs in my part of Aus, it's too cold I think for them, but we get white-tails *shudder*
7. Guest... Why does it matter if I am new or not? If a regular poster, a guest, or a moderator said something I didn't agree with I would certainly express my opinion- but I would like to think there should be an underlying respect for EVERYONE'S opinions no matter what their status. I was just curious as to your reasons for not being a member- thank you for answering that, spam is a worldwide curse

paws

Me too. How can I walk around on one paw? :D
9.
I am going to buy a dog soon and have a few breeds in mind. The dog I eventually do get will have to fit in with my lifestyle.
What will you do with your dog if it doesn't fit in with your lifestyle? Dump it? Dogs aren't toys or machines, they're living breathing creatures with personalities. The one you eventually choose will be relying on YOU to care for it; that includes spending time with it, socialising it lots with other people and their dogs, and giving it the training and exercise that all dogs, especially the large dogs you're interested in, need in order to be happy and well-behaved, particularly if your pet is going to spend most of its time alone and cooped up. I suggest you reconsider your idea of getting a dog if you are not prepared to adjust your lifestyle to some degree for the next 10-15 years. You'll have a little pup to look after and that requires time, energy, and selflessness. Oh, and patience!! Good luck with your search.
10. Sorry Aroura!! I will try and post HAPPY stories from now on!! :D I'm so glad you saved Tessa. BK has always been there for me, and I'll always be there for him. He never fails to make me laugh with his antics. Today, he wanted some of my breakfast for his breakfast. I told him to lie down and he did, deliberately putting his paw over my foot so I couldn't move without him knowing, and looking up at me expectantly as if to say "well I'm lying down... hurry up!" He ended up getting some toast for his cuteness factor :D
11. Aroura!! Wish I could do that with Bk!!! I know this isn't really relevant but it's funny: One Easter we got all our choccies etc. and when we were out BK went into my sister's room and ate all her expensive chocolates (he tried the cheapie chocs; they were covered with dog saliva). If he'd got sick it would've been awful but the fact that he had a discerning palate was hilarious.
12. that's hilarious! Bk doesn't do anything like that, he thinks he's too cool for toys! Sometimes he's also too cool for us mere mortals, if he doesn't want to be patted he'll go to his bed and put his paw over his face as if to say "leave me alone"- it's so Greta Garbo! But he doesn't complain when you DO pat him... the big sook :D
13. oh I could go on but it's all been said... :-? I have half a mind to email the club and ask them why they are not pushing for desexing as much as they should be. :x Deepsesnake- I have a paw too now, and it feels GOOD
14. The Titanic theme music doesn't help either :(
15. At the moment BK's an outside dog (dad's decision, not mine!). He used to be an inside dog, then we moved house and he became an outside dog. When I move out of home in November, he's coming with me, and he will be free to roam inside once again... I don't know how the hair still ends up everywhere though! Gizmo is gorgeous, look at the photo... how could something that playful-looking be anything but cute?! So is Sasha BTW :)
16. I've just finished bawling my eyes out over this story: http://www.geocities.com/bhcv_club/howcould.html This story really got to me because we had a Basset who died in 1991 at the age of 14. She was absolutely adorable and the gentlest, most affectionate little darling...I even miss her howling and her slobbering, though BK makes up for all of that and more
17. LOL I can think of some people who need neutering too... Gizmo is adorable!!! What is it with some dogs and their shedding coats? BK is exactly the same, his hair ends up in the washing, in the kitchen... not to mention Rinny's (our other dog, a 15yo GSD mix) fluffy hair, the birds use it for their nests
18. Yeah, I thought it was a pretty irresponsible bit of information. Think of all the uneducated dog owners out there... and imagine this sort of advice (from a DOG CLUB, mind you) being bandied about everywhere... :x
19. Does Star behave the way he did to that guy to anyone else? That's a little odd, and maybe something you should keep an eye on. He sounds like a pretty obedient pup though!! :D
20. This info is on the Cocker Spaniel Club of Victoria's website (ed. by me): http://connexus.net.au/~cockers/page7.htm "Considering that city by-laws request a dog to be on a lead at all times when off the owner
21. What a great dog you have there Star!! Blitz works for effusive praise and food! I used to use a check chain on him for walking but that was hopeless, he would just pull and choke for an hour no matter what I did... Bullboxers- the head halter has done wonders!  thanks for your advice about the harness though :)
22. GORGEOUS pups... and big too! (Mum thinks anything bigger than a Cocker is HUGE, what if she saw one of these...!!!)
23. Yes they can be VERY noisy and will bark at anyone in the street (from the comfort of their own home, of course). They also don't like cats in my experience. There was a cat who lived next door to Grandad and for 2 years it pranced along the top of the fence and teased the hell out of the dachshunds. One day the cat must have slipped while showing off and that was it. The dogs broke its back and mauled the poor thing, it had to be put down- but the cat's owner was surprisingly philosopical about it and had been aware for some time that his cat deliberately goaded the dogs. It was nobody's fault (though maybe something could have been done to either stop the dogs barking at it or stop the cat from teasing them), just one of those awful, natural-instinct things. :(
24. Should be easy to photograph him now I can keep him still. :) Now all I have to do is teach him that the Halti is GOOD and HERE TO STAY, and no amount of pawing at it, whining or pouting at me is going to remove it.
25. Ahh dachshunds. My grandpa has had dachshunds since I was a kid and though I am nowhere near an expert on them I would like to share some experiences: They may be small; my uncle calls them bonsai Dobermans! Dachels think they're a lot bigger than they are. They have a deep bark for something so small and are very good watch dogs. One dog, Peebo, managed to scare off a couple of robbers by jumping over the high barricade that kept him in the laundry at night. This damaged his back so severely he had to be euthanised. They're fairly active and with any dog, it's important they get out and socialise. They are very affectionate and fond of luxury. They are generally obedient but opinion seems to differ, I do know they are stubborn! They tolerate small children but will snap if provoked (like most dogs). Overfeeding can lead to back problems in later life. Their life expectancy is around 10-12 years (from my own experience anyway). Some of the problems my grandpa's dogs had were heart murmur, leaking valves, and diabetes. Currently Grandad has a 9-month old standard dachshund, Tomson, who is adorable if not a bit hyper. He loves BK and tries to mate him (or his back leg, that's all he can get around!) at every opportunity. BK got sick of this and all he had to do was put Tomson's head gently in his mouth and BREATHE on him, and Tomson was VERY subdued after that. Dachshund Club of Victoria is a good website for info: http://www.ozramp.net.au/~teckel/dcv/dcv.htm And here is a picture of Tomson (ok, here is a link to see the picture) http://image1ex.villagephotos.com/pubimage.asp?id_=519142&uid=36240
