Leash Pulling!

Hey Rotten Two, No offense taken. :D As trainers we just have different training methods. I am always open to new ideas. About the only method I'm really dead set againist is the Kohler. That is just way to harsh for my taste.

Leash Pulling!

I don't know if you have a Wal Mart available or not, but they carry a pretty nice no-pull harness. It works on the premise of it goes under the dogs front legs so the harder they pull the tighter it gets. Think about it this way. If you had something pulling under your arm pits you would stop. Now this like anything else you use is a tool. As Rotten said you may not even make it the length of the driveway, but as soon as the dog starts to pull you stop in your steps and give the command "No Pull". As soon as the dog stops moving praise him/her. Basically become a tree don't move as long as the dog is pulling. You may only be able to take one or two steps, but they learn pretty quick that if they pull you don't move. You should be walking on a loose lead before long. Some dogs are just plain more stubborn than others and you have may have to repeat this excerise numerous times. If you do that is okay. Just remember to always end any training session on a positive note. If you have to have the dog sit or down, what ever they do best finish with that. You want to making training fun for the dog. Good Luck!
3. Pictures??? Awwww man. I knew I forgot something. But trying to watch him and hubby, it was worse than 4 kids
4. Well we made it through Halloween. This was his first Halloween and I wasn't sure what he would do, since he is only 8 months. The only time he braked was when a kid came to the door dressed as a ware wolf. The rest of the time I told him to sit and stay, and he didn't even wiggle with all of the kids coming to the door and the strange costumes. He was such a good boy. Hubby on the other hand, taught him to howl. He had a darn tape playing to scare the kids of wolves howling. And of course he had to encourage Jaeger to join in when no was around. Yep now the dog howls on command. Men you can't live with em and it's against the law to shoot him. I'm guess I'm stuck.
5. 6 months is a bit young in my opinion. They are still puppy stupid and investigating everything. Unfortunately a puppy uses his mouth to investigage. If this is your only option, then check all of your plants, I had one dog that was death on roses. Yes even with the thorns he would chew on my roses. I had to move the rose bushes. Even with all of his training as an adult that brat would eat the rose petels. They won't hurt him, but hubby couldn't bring me flowers unless we put them out of his reach. My bigest concern is rocks, small pebbles will pass, but if he starts chewing on rocks he could destroy his teeth. As hard as it is I would puppy proof a room in my house so he didn't have to be crated all the time at least until he is a little older. Good luck! Sincerely,
6. A good rule of thumb for a puppy is they can hold their urine for about one hour for every month of age. Example for a three month old pup they shouldn't be left for more than 3 hours. It also depends on the breed. Some dogs will just learn to control it faster than others. However, I use the one hour per month until they are at least 6 months. If the dog is starting to mark and that is a distint possibilty. They have the belly bands for male dogs. Basically a diaper. That usually breaks the habit pretty quit. They don't like that feeling. Also if the crate is big enough for the dog to stand at the front and hike its leg and go out side the crate, the crate is probably to big for the dog. I would section it off and not give as much room for playing in there. JMHO.
7. This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart. I "had" a service dog that had to be retired because he started having Grand Mal seizures. The first one was on New Years Eve scared me to death. When you have a 120 pound German Shepherd that doesn't know you it can be dangerous. He also was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism which was a contributing factor. Some breeds are just more pre-desposed to having seizures. With Max we put him on Phenobarbitol which didn't control them, then we added Potassium Bromide. The problem with seizures if they aren't controlled quickly the dogs brain will only continue to miss fire more frequently. Max started having Grand Mal seizures two to three times a day and at least twice a week. When they have repeated seizures in the same day its called railroad tracking. This happend to Max, I had to rush him to the vet, she gave him a shot of valium to break the cycle, he died in my arms. I'll never forget that. We did a necropsey to see what was going on and the vet discovered a small tumor on the pituary gland. We also discovered he had an enlarged heart. One thing to remember if a dog is seizing. DO NOT! Put your hand near their mouth, its a good way to get bit. A dog due their anatomy can not swallow it's tongue its best to just let nature take it's course and move anything awayf from the dog that could hurt them. Good Luck.
8. OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!! I knew part of the stuff but I didn't know all of that! When she was putting on a show about how confused she was I took her to the hospital. I sat with her and listened to her and I warned her not to let me catch her in a lie. And, now I find out all of this!!! all I can say is GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. I am so in shock I don't know what to say. I just wish that Justin would read that letter she wrote and would see the pictures of her and her boyfriend. I'm sure he doesn't know all of that.
9.
Is their last name Browlow or Brownlow?
Brownlow
10.
One other thing... am I the only one that thinks J looks kind of like Uncle Fester? I don't mean that in a demeaning "he's ugly" sense, but... well, just look. Is it just me?
ROFL I'm sorry but that is too funny. Ever since I met him, I have been trying to put my finger on who he looks like now I know. FYI he doesn't look any better in person.
11. Just to put your minds at ease those those pic's of Naomi and Justin are the real deal. Unfortunately they are so co-dependent it's pathetic. I'm really glad he is getting out of the Army in November - December time frame. We don't need people like him in Army. They give the rest of a bad name.
12. Unfortunately I don't have any idea where Zoey came from. I wish I did.
13. Thanks Lorraine for posting those e-mails from Naomi. It's a relief to know that everyone is finding out about her. As far as I know Naomi has said "they are moving to Arizona" they plan to live with her mother until they can get a place. I'm just so glad that the truth has come out. Sincerely,
14. Hi, I know I'm new to the board. However I wanted to clarify a couple of things. I'm Alena's friend and I have 20+ years of training experience. I have taken numerous courses on Canine Behavior. What Alena was trying to say was I'm Certified as a Canine Good Citizenship Evaluator. I have worked with a couple of Master Trainers and my specility is to go to the home and evaluate the dogs with problem behaviors. I told Alena along time ago to use the NILIF. This is not the first time Star has shown aggresion to her son. Star shows classic signs of Fear Aggression. When you approach her she backs away with hackles up and barking fiercely with her tail tucked between her legs. She did this even when Alena brought her to my home. I have tried to help Alena as much as possible. My opinion is Star had major problems before Alena ever got her. I didn't know she was getting her or I would have temperament tested her. At this point Star is very unpredictable. The medical issues can be dealt with, Pancreatic Insufficieny can be treated, the fear aggression is another issue. Anyone who would temperament test this dog would fail her. She is jumpy at loud sounds, she is afraid of things that she is not familiar with. If startled by something unusal she backs away with hackles up. Unfortunatley something has happened in Stars past that we will never know about. I will continue to help Alena anyway I can. If she really wants to try a rescue I will continue to look, but the three I have talked to said they did not have resourses to deal with her.
