1. I was wondering if any of you own a grooming business or a pet setting business because i wanted to get an idea of how many types of permits etc are needed. i know all cities are different but i just wanted a general idea. my mother and i are going to try and open a pet sitting service we are writting out the long long to do list and seeing just where we stand. so please give me your imput! Thanks so much ~pawpaw~ :D
2. if you give mimi a potato chip, she will lick it untill its mushy then leave it there. she also does that weird kibble thing, grabs a few and tosses them on the floor then eats them one at a time. she will whine for a treat, only to bury it in her bed OR MINE! over and over again like its a game lol she has this squeaker toy that has the squeakers at each end, and if you put it under a blanket and squeez them at the same time it sounds like its crying so she franticly digs then grabs it and lays on it like shes feeding babies and it turns into this huge game every time lmao this always cracks me up if you say "daddys home" she runs to the door, and if i say it just to trick her :o , she will drag the mat away from the door and "fight me for it" hahahah when we are in the house, and i say "get it.. go get it" she grabs a toy.. if i say it outside, she digs a hole lmao she always sleeps behind my knees and when im in one of my depressed moods, she just kinda knows, she doesnt even play.. just follows me around looking at me all day i think its more sweet then quirky tho lol
3. hhhmm, i dont know why it posted me as a guest, i did sign in lol maybe this time it will work ! :drinking: ~PawPaw~
4. Thanks for the go-ahead... This is what i had got for mimi .. the 8ft. (they also do custom sizes) http://www.myrope.com/products/standard-leash.html And here is the home page http://www.myrope.com/index.html I really am never too happy with what i get over the internet, But these are just great. to me its worth the money. ___ If you look at the Left side on just about any page, they have the form to get the free catalog and 2 samples rope. ~Mel~
5. I came across a site one day and i orderd a lead for mimi.. the prices are good they use heavy swivel clasps, AND the cutest part of all, they personalize it with your pets name for free in script or block letters. I am very pleased with the product and i am getting ready to order another one in another color. (lots of colors there) The site has a free catalog and 2 free samples of the rope thye use. They make the product for horses, dogs, boats.. etc. I just wanted to pass it along if i am allowed to post the web addy here. (and for the record, I have NOTHING to do with the site) Im just saying for me, it was money well spent. ~Mel~
6. MiMi was never affraid of thunder storms at all or any loud noises...(except the vaccum) NOW since i moved to florida and am going threw rainy season, the storms just come and go day and night and mimi is so scared. one night a few months ago the lightnig and thunder had gotten so loud, it felt like it was crashing in the drive way it woke me up out of deep sleep like bombs exploding. the power went out.. etc. When i looked for mimi, she was on the floor shaking and had shredded hubbys blanket to bits.. it must have been storming for a while for her to do all that. and l did what anyone else would have done, i scooped her up and wrapped her up in her blanky and we all went back into bed. mimi would not sleep.. she was trembling and twitching and just staring at the window as if something was going to get her. ever since that night... she freaks out as soon as she hears a little rain.. she will trembel and be at my ankles or make a B-line for under the computer chair and whine to me as if she saying "MOMMY DO YOU HEAR THAT" her being at my ankles doesnt bother me, its seeing her whole body tremble like shes going to burst. I guess you can call this traumatic stress? The Vet gave me some ideas to try and nothing works.. He suggested tranqulizers but i would rather go about this in a different way. ..shes only 1 yr old and i dont want to have her taking meds the rest of her life.. i hope you can understand how i feel about that. I am in desperate need of help from anyone. I will try anything. THis is what i have tried so far... I have played sounds of thunder very low for a few days strait to "get her used to the sound" that didnt work i have gotten her a new toy that we only play with durring storms so she can see it as something positive, also new cookie treats that didnt work, she wanted NOTHING to do with it. I have tried to not pay anyattention to her.. i have tried to comfort her .. a few times i held her in my arms on the porch when it was down pouring so she could see that its only rain etc.. all she did was sniff the air and start to whine and shake more.. I have told her no and made her go in her bed ... I am out of ideas.. and its just getting worse.. :drinking: I Love t-storms so she isnt picking up any bad vibes from me Any one know what i can do? Im sorry this post is soooo long. ~Mel~
7. i would say take him to the vet but like yousaid you cant... sure hes just not home sick? how long has it been since hes eaten? some times dogs just do that, they wont eat and a few days later they are hungry. he might have some kind of blockage in his intestine.. or just an upset stomach. after our long move to florida, mimi wouldnt eat or go to the bathroom for a few days.. LONG car rides can bother dogs even if they like to be inthe car. I would try my hardest to find a vet that would work something out with you. and for now, if you have to sit near him for him to eat, i would do it. something is better then nothing.

9. Im in Fort lauderdale, and i REALLY want another dog, but i have a small apartment so it could only be a small small dog ( also says that on my lease) i know for broward county the limit is 3 animals. 2 is my limit with an apartment. If you know of any little dogs that need a home and would be good with a hyper active chihuahua.. plese let me know. its ok if he/she isnt house trained either, i have tile floors so cleanign up is easy. plus i have a yard with lots of pre dug holes... mimi is trying to get to china. OR strike oil.. which ever comes first. lmao broward county shelter NEVER has any tiny dogs :( lots of pitbulls tho, i hate the bad hype people make over them. some of them are soooooooooo sweet that it hurts to walk away from the shelter and leave them there.. what big lumps of love they can be. ok, im babbling.. sorry... took some cold meds and now my brain is spacy..lol ~mel~
10.
I've heard that the key word here is sweat. Ben does this too, so I've been asking around and I've got the same anwser over and over again... Dogs like the smell and taste of sweat... :o (Gross!!) /Crest
.....and gas..lol mimi never passes on a whiff of hubbys "afterglow" in the bathroom.. lmao
11. ok, here is that pic i was just talking about ....lololol
12.
HOW OLD IS MIMI? GLADIS USED TO LICK THE CARPET LIKE SHE WAS DEMEMTED AS GREW OLDER SHE OUTGREW IT. SHE DID IT UPTO ABOUT 9 MONTHS :D
mimi will be one year in june. and she just started this about a month ago, my mothers bichon does it too, but not to this extent.... she chewing the crotch out of underware still but not as much, she has many toys and outside playtime, i dont think its about pent up energy, i know this may sound funny, but she has this look on her face when shes licking the pillows ...almost like shes in love with it.... like its a baby. her eyes roll into her head and then she closes them and just keeps licking..... a few times i caught her on hubbys chest while he was in the recliner sleeping, she was licking his chest hair... i cracked up so bad.. i have a picture of that someplace on my puter, i should post it here...lmao she has "that" look in her eye. other then hating a wet pillow, i dont really care that she does it, i just thought maybe her tummy hurts or she needs something ???
13. hi all... sorry i have not been around, im still trying to deal with joe dying, its tough... but i have a question about mimi, for a few weeks now she just sits on our pillows and closes her eyes and licks them till they are soaking wet.. YICK..lol when it was nappy time she was on on the sofa with hubby under the blanket, she was doing the same thing and when i walked past, i seen that she had chewed the the edge of the blanket to bits! what is this new habbit about???? is it some type of comfot thing? or is something bothering her? im lost with this one. :o :o :o (and for those of you who dont know, shes not doing it b/c joe is gone, we have moved away from joe and parents last year, she doesnt even know joe is gone)
14. Mimi seems to be itchy all the time, i give her a flea bath once a month and normally get one or two fleas off, not really any eggs. this month i gave her a bath with just warm water and baby shampoo for sensitive skin.... shes still itching..... i changed foods a few months ago and she likes the food more but shes still itching. there is no redness or "wounds" i dont even see any dry skin patches so im lost here ... i want my little baby to relax and stop scratching all the time, do you know of any creams or shampoos that i can try that dont have chemicals in them? some of the stuff on the market scares me and i wont use it. one bottle i was reading said it might give the dog/puppy mild seizures, ataxia ,excess salivaton, agitation or make the dog seem dizzy!.. um no thinks i will pass. :o think an oatmeal bath would work? TIA~mell
15. Do any of you have rescued, retired racing greyhounds? what was the adoption process like? and was it expensive? ~pawpaw~
16. my moms Lab/mix Kiko (female) is like that, she will come up to you and stick her big sloppy mouth in your ear your eye your mouth (better known as the suprise doggy french kiss.lol) if your crying in bed she will lay right ontop of you anyway she can and she will go to sleep or stare at you untill you let her know your better. The other 2 dogs are the same, if you have a bruise, cut, back ache, whatever! they want to kiss it and make it better and they will follow you all over the house like a baby sitter.. its just that unconditional love. :P
17.
Because they smell like YOU and the people she loves. I had a dog that used to steal stuff, and wouldnt give it up without showing teeth.... She is insecure, and steals stuff that smells like the people she loves. Maybe take something that smells like you, a towel, a tee-shirt, and put it in her bed. Make sure she has a bed of her own, and then give her something to keep in it that smells like you.... She just wants to know that you're there... She may be feeling insecure when you're gone.... A doggie bed with a "smell" will help her. She wont feel so alone...
Her bed is right next to mine and she has about 20 of my hair scrunchies in it..lol    shes very skiddish but i guess thats just the chihuahua in her. i give her 100 % love, but if she wants 100% more then thats what she gets! i will see what happens. every day she makes me laugh at something else. I just dont want other people laughing and wondering why 6 pairs of mah draws are on the couch! lmao
18. Why does MiMi keep stealing worn underware from the laundry basket? she steals them, brings them onto the sofa and chews/ licks them at first i laughed at it, but now.. god forbid someone comes over and sees this... I WOULD DIE  and its not just underware, its worn socks, used tissues and toilet paper, she likes to shred tissue all over the floor when no one is looking, and i swear i watch her like she was a 2 year old baby, but as soon as my head is turned ITS PARTY TIME for her! what the heck is that all about? its getting kinda gross.. lol ~pawpaw~ anyone ever deal with this?
19.

You can't tell anyone how to grieve. When my dog passed, our newer dog really helped us through that time. And a friend of mine recently got a new dog right after hers died, and has found it to be very helpful for her grieving process.
There is no way i would even think about telling someone how to or when to grieve, I dont think there is anyone who would try. thats not even the idea of this post. I just wanted ppl's ideas and thoughts on "me getting involved", I really dont want them to get a dog "just because". These 2 dogs are their first real pets, the never really knew what it was like to live with a dog, (or any animal) over the years with Joe and puffy, they learned to realize that animals DO have personalities...etc. i think in a way he thinks he gonna find another Joe, and i told him there will never be another Joe because every animal is just like a person, different. I did talk to him tonight and he decided to get an older dog, and he said he wont rush it, he said hes gonna just look around, and i told him that he will know when he has found the right one. ~pawpaw~
OH I am sooo SORRY!! I should be more careful with my wording, I did not mean to say that you were trying to tell anyone that. That was just my way of saying different people grieve differently. I am really sorry about how it came across and hope you'll accept my humble apologies! I'm a dummy sometimes and forget to read my posts and see how they might be interpreted by others. I think they should get another dog. As you say they learned a lot of dogs and loving dogs. Maybe he is looking for another Joe, but he will soon learn that while there is no other Joe, that the new dog has a special personality too, and dogs can let you cry to them without it being embarassing. Again, sorry for my poor wording.
Its ok, I thought you might have gotten the wrong idea about my post but i know what you mean. even if it was ment in "that" way, every one has an oppinion or differnt way of saying things and thats what i wanted to hear/read . So no need for apologies :) but thank you. ~pawpaw~
20.
How are you feeling today? It is almost a week. Just wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you. I was wondering if you feel better or worse now?
i cant say that i feel any better, but i am ok. It just takes time to get used to the fact that hes gone but i know thats nothing new to any of you we all deal with it... i just feel so guilty for not being able to take him to the vet, he didnt look or act sick NOTHING, he just went to sleep and didnt feel like waking up. I am glad it was like that tho, I like to think that he was having a nice dream and in that dream he was called to the other side... there are worse ways to die in fact i hope i go in my sleep and not at the hands of anyone or anything. i know hes having fun where ever he is... im sure hes digging a hole and hiding stuff in it, or being silly somehow. i just wish i could see it as far as my dad (father in law) goes, i think hes going to have joe creamated, because the ground is frozen and full of snow, I dont think he knows how to deal with Joe being gone he never loved an animal before, i guess in his family "back in the day" it was too "girly" to show you care for an animal or what ever his reason was for never having a pet. i got him to try having a pet because i know down inside he was a big softy, and he turned out to be a great dad for joe and puffy, i think hes sorry he didnt live his whole life with pets... anyway overall everyone is ok, but still very sad. ~pawpaw~ Thanks for thinking about us. :)
21. i had that problem with MiMi if i sneezed, she ran away like i was mad at her, and she wasnt even a shelter dog/didnt have a history, i got her from people that let the dog run lose and it got pregnant .. anyway we play alot and if i can, i make some of the weird noises she affraid of so they become regular. the only ones she has a problem with now is the vacuum and someone knocking on the door ( but i think that gets all dogs excited in some way good or bad) plus i got one of those little doggy back packs so she could be near my chest while i was walking around, cleaning or what ever, so when those "bad" things happend she was right there and i could instantly comfort her and avoid chasing her. i think running after her started to scare her more when i was only trying to comfort her. (i dont know how big your puppy is so the backpack thing might not work..lol but just sharing) :)
22.
will someone be around constantly to look after a puppy? Also bear in mind that a rescue dog will need people around for a little bit to help him/her settle in... I
There is always someone at home, My mother in law, had a stroke years and years ago so she doesnt work and thats why they picked Chihuahuas in the first place, a larger dog would drag her and make her fall. They are very patient with the shelter dogs, and the rug already has old poop stains on it :p and they have had the same routine for 45 years so its the perfect enviroment for a abused/shelter dog. (puppy or not) I just thought he might be jumping into something to quickly. But it is true that everyone grieves differntly so maybe this will help them all, puffy included.
23. Well, i think puffy would like another friend, he does have issues from being abused, aparently he was kicked around allot and left in a crate all the time, i guesss thats why he got so fat. but none of his issues go twords other animals, only people. we have the scars to prove it (ouchy) he has gotten allot better, after 3 years of having him, he knows this is his home now so i think allot of his anger went away. i told his father how hard it is for older dogs to get adopted and he would be doing a really good thing, and thats just what puffy needs if they got another dog. someone at his own pace, old and lazy. but i also told him he should bring puffy with to kinda let him pick his new friend, he just laughed at me on that one and said i watch the animal planet too much. i just dont want him to rush and get the first dog he sees and with him being very emotional from Joe passing it looks like thats what hes gonna do. you know what im saying? I guess i will tell him that i want to search for the dog, at least this way i know he wont get a puppy :p I just E-mailed a Chihuahua rescue group that has allot of older dogs to be placed... maybe we will get lucky. ~pawpaw~
24. My father is already looking for another dog. I told him he should wait a little bit, but he says he NEEDS to fill the empty space. ( Joe passed on the 14th) And puffy the other dog wont eat because hes depressed, and that is VERY strange/ different for him, when they got puffy from the pound, he was WAY fat! and his favorite thing to do is eat. I can totaly understand him needing to feel regular again, and worrying about puffy, but its only been 6 days! Plus, they thought about getting a puppy... i told him he shouldnt for 2 reasons, 1- they are in their mid 60's and a puppy is allot of work for them, plus being that age, it leaves the door open for a pet that no one can take care of if they should happen to depart this earth... 2- puffy is old and has arthritis, he barely tolerated MiMi jumping all over him, i definatly think a puppy is a no-no for them What do you guys think? should i help him start looking? or try and talk to him some more? ( ihave been looking online at some older shelter Chihuahuas and there are sooo many waiting for a family) tell me what you think...please. * and no i dont mean "that age" as beeing old :p ... but you never know what can happen..just thought i would clear that up before i got yellet at...lol ~pawpaw~
25. Sorry about that, ... i dont know why but i wasnt logged in.
