1. The problem I have with fighting (errm, sorry, "rolling") is that you are essentially being cruel to be kind and it's unnecessary cruelty at that. Putting dogs at great risk of harm to produce what are seen in the eyes of many as "superior" specimens of the APBT for some reason I cannot for the life of me understand. Furthermore, it's illegal. There's a REASON why it's illegal. Just like there's a reason why animal cruelty is illegal. Hello?? If you have to be so cruel to a dog in order to get its "best" attributes, that dog breed should no longer exist.

Training a heeler to "heel" (and a well-trained cattledog can do the work of five people and that is a plus especially in Australia where many farmers can't afford to pay five people) is not cruel. I would imagine that training a Border Collie to herd isn't as cruel as fighting it against another dog either.

I don't give a stuff what "true fanciers" of the breed think. It is cruel to fight your dog. End of story. The "true fanciers" need to get their heads out of their arses and realise that the old ways don't always cut it anymore. Not that long ago it wasn't a crime to rape one's wife, either, as sex was seen as the man's right. Does that mean that any man who rapes his wife is just a little old-school and should be allowed to get away with it?

  2. I am sure this has been asked before, but anyway...why do we need "game" dogs? What is their purpose? Before you start rabbiting on about how there are lots of other dog breeds that have no particular purpose or are so far removed from their original purpose that it may as well not count, why do you need a dog-aggressive dog that you can't even keep legally in most parts of the world, or if you can keep them, are subject to so many restrictions it's not worth the effort? That if said dog makes one false move that may not be considered so bad in a different dog breed, it's curtains for that dog? That you have to keep separated from your other dogs, if you have them, most of the time? Why do you need a dog, if it is to be kept so true to the original intentions of the founders of the breed, needs to be *fought* to be considered worthy? Where is the allure in that?

I will reiterate that dog fighting, no matter how much you try to pretty it up and say, "awww, it's done as humanely as possible etc etc etc", is still dog fighting and it's still illegal. Just like rape. Rape is rape, no matter if it's because you're drunk or tired and can't be bothered fighting your boyfriend off or if some knife-wielding maniac grabs you down a dark alley.

  3. Having come into this debate at a late stage, I would vote for this to remain open. Call it whatever you want, rolling, whatever, Hmmm fights her dogs. Therefore she is a dog fighter and thus there is no problem for me personally to, as Kiwi put, call a spade a spade. I don't see any of you jumping on the fact that Hmmmm called Kiwi a BYBer?

  4.
Point. The woman has to make an agonizing decision, and you (and others) are ripping into her about past decisions, not helping advise constructively on what is to be done now.

    (edited to correct one typo)
It's a public forum. As CC said and I have said, you post about your life on here, it's open to criticism. Can't handle it? Don't post about it. This may never have happened if some forethought had gone into the decision; you never know. It may not be *especially* helpful top YOU or TX, but CC and I made a valid point that has much more scope than you seem to think. Perhaps it will help someone *else*, lurker or member, think twice about buying a dog totally inappropriate for his or her lifestyle.

  5.
As for the comment on me owning a dog my husband and i talked about having a pet and he suggested a german shepard because he had 15 years experience with that breed he is not by all means a trainer or a professional but he has had the training experience and my good friend who lives here is a akc certified trainer and she helps me out with star since my husband is away...
I find this pretty silly and irresponsible. Your husband is away, so you get a dog HE is familiar with to protect you while he, the one with all this experience with the breed, is not there? Why didn't you get a dog YOU were confident in handling seeing as you're the one who has day-to-day control over her?

I think r2's post had a lot of merit.

Good luck with what you decide.

  6.
I just happen to think hes an ok guy...if there were a ban on breeding he would not be one of the ones going against it...
Someone being an "ok guy" doesn't make his actions right. If I wanted to recreate a breed that had been out of action for 300 years what would you all think?
I dont think crossbreeding in this case for historical reasons is as stupid as breeding 17 litters of Malty Oodle Shi Doos a year for profit is no...and frankly thats a unreasonable comparison...
But why do we need a breed that is dead and buried? As I said, it's gone for a reason. How many dog breeds do we have already that can do the stuff this "historical" breed can do?

I don't think it's unreasonable to compare breeding poo mixes and breeding dead dog breeds- both of them are completely and utterly unnecessary and not done with anything but the selfishness of the owner as paramount. Whether that selfishness is fiscal or for another reason there's nothing that's really altruistic about breeding crossbred dogs, historical or not.

  7.
But hes not crossbreeding with no reason or simply money in mind as the maltypoo and goldendoodle people do...hes attempting to re-create an extinct breed....but I agree you are entitled to your opinion and its a valid point...
Surely the breed would be extinct for a reason? How much do you want to tamper with evolution any more than we already have? Are there not enough breeds in existence at the present time? Shall we recreate other dead and buried dog breeds just because we can and not because they serve any useful purpose? What are your thoughts on the Labradoodle, a dog apparently bred for the blind who were also allergic to dog hair? Shall we bring up how many homeless dogs are on Petfinder alone?

I don't know. Sorry to hijack your thread CE, but crossbreeding just for history's sake is just as stupid a reason as doing it for money. K, I really can't see how you can be so against breeding crossbred dogs and support this. Didn't you want a two-year moratorium on all breeding??

  8. Hey, well you know what, if you don't like the way we run things, you are quite free to leave at any time. Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. :)

Clearly you have zero understanding of the particular way this forum operates. We are not just a collection of nutjobs who bitch and carry on like we are now (and when we do it is not without good reason). We are like a family. Some of us have been here for years. Through trial and error we have found that allowing free speech is the best way of keeping things in check. There is no fun in an administration that constantly plays boring, bossy parent, deleting or locking threads randomly and banning people. The forum members have repeatedly endorsed this, something you would be well aware of if you had bothered to poke around rather than just let fly with your barrage of abuse.
