1. YES Dogs are Awesome for security! There are a couple places that I will not go without Kaleb. One is a family members house.....the family member has a ongoing history of being physically abusive....Hitting, slapping, using physical force to make his point and get his way, etc. He has done this recently (once when Kaleb was not there). Last night I was visiting them (they are close family) and the man said, "You know, ain't noone going to get near you with that dog around." I said, "Yep, unless they want to get bitten." The really weird thing is that Kaleb always lays between me and this man. And once the man stood up really quickly out of his chair.....Kaleb jumped up and voiced a large snarl-growl....a big toothy akita snarl.....the man quietly set back down. Every since the most recent hitting thing, Kaleb does not act like he trusts the man at all...with good reason. But Kaleb was not present during the latest abuse....Is he reading my body language or does Kaleb know something that I don't? Wierd!
  2. Thanks!! That was what I was looking for!
  3. I have recently started showing Kaleb in AKC Obedience trials. He has done REALLY well getting his CD in only 3 shows. :o Needless to say, I was shocked. But now I have a little problem....I NEVER in my wildest dreams expected him to get his CD so quickly. In fact, I never had begun training for Open level competition because I thought we would eventually get his CD and then think about Open. So, now I am kind of in a pickle because of my lack of preparation. My question is, are their forums online that are dedicated to competition obedience training. I have searched and have not found anything. I am looking for a place that I can lurk :-? and read ...and read...and read. Does any one have ideas? Thanks!
  4. I agree completely with what everyone has said. The dog was definitely defending itself. This attack was provoked in the worst way! That is what angers me so much when some say to put the dog to sleep! Rehome possibly, PTS no, not yet anyway. I feel super bad for the dog. I cannot imagine it's confusion.

    Akita Mania!

Yes, I am good to go. And unfortunately, my allergies came back in full force and I am sneezing several times daily. (Right after the surgery my allergies were GONE. I was hopeful that they were gone for good, but no luck. )

    Akita Mania!

Sinus surgery to remove diseased sinus tissue, reduction of "concha bollossae" (sp), septoplasty, and something else that I cannot remember. Now I know that the doc meant by packing your nose. :o

    Akita Mania!

WOW things sure changed around here over Christmas!!! ....I had surgery and was down and out for nearly a month. But I AM BACK!! I am also a fellow Akita owner. I have owned Akitas for 14 years. They are my ABSOLUTE favorite breed.
  8.
Kaleb- It's nice to see someone else on the board with a keeter. I was starting to feel a little lonely  LOL, I am just kidding.
WOW what a beaut!!! In the face it (he/she?) looks like my first Akita. She was solid white but had a black hood. Welcome. FYI -- I lurk a lot, but post a little. 8)
  9. They did not get it from a pet store, but they did say that the breeder was a "BYB" after all. They did not know it when the dog was purchased. I have seen a Newfandland for sale at a petstore in Nashville....She was approx 3 months old and attacked the glass partition she was behind everytime someone walked up. VERY SCARY. Of course the hick-a-billies and their kids throught it was funny and kept harrassing her.
  10. They feed a complete raw (barf) diet since he was 3 months old. They did have a vet check done (he is healthy), but a thyriod panel was not completed.
  11. On another dog forum there has been an ongoing conversation/debate about whether to rehabilitate a biting (one incident) newfie or to put the dog to sleep. I would love to hear your opinions and resoning behind those opinions. ----------------------------- The dog in question is 14 months old, 160 pound Male, and neutered 6 weeks ago. The dog has been through puppy kindergarden and .... (quoting from original post) "has some obedience for the average dog. He became testy ( would not come when called, drop- it type issues ) had him e-collar conditioned, but the trainer was not able to commit to weekly training with me and our dog.. If I could not be trained professionally, I wanted no part of it...so, I have an expensive e-collar collecting dust. He became testy ( would not come when called, drop- it type issues ) had him e-collar conditioned, but the trainer was not able to commit to weekly training with me and our dog.. If I could not be trained professionally, I wanted no part of it...so, I have an expensive e-collar collecting dust.. Our Newf now weighs 160 Lbs., willingly obeys basic commands, sits before eating, going out doors, down-stay, does them ALL well, has a beautiful, gentle personality with us, children, strangers, surroundings, etc. BUT, he has never would "drop-IT", if we wanted to take a bone from him, it would be a growl, sometimes he would snap at the air near our hands, then he would get sprayed with Bitter Apple, and he would drop-it... Bitter Apple became our crutch... he knows that I am not alfa, he knows hubby is... I never take things from the dog, I am the giver, hubby is the taker... A couple of nights ago, in the living room I witnessed the horror of my life... normal day, nothing unusual, dog was happy..Ted was eating cookies on the couch, dog goes and sits next to him, got no cokkies, went to go lay on the floor, but swiped a klennex of the table first, laid on the floor with his face on it.. Ted got up, stood in front of the dog and said leave-it, dog growled, Ted stepped back to get the bitter apple, and the dog LUNGED at Ted, biting his forearm, when Ted started to kick the dog, the dog LUNGED again and his sheer weight knocked Ted to the floor, and the dog was very focused in an attack mode... all that I could do was scream at the dog ""OFF"" and a lot of bitter apple... was over in 15 seconds, and the dog felt terrible and KNEW it had done something very wrong... Ted went to the hospital, got stitches in one of the bites, ER found 3 bites.... We are still in "SHOCK" to what happen.. the dog is in good health, well taken care of, and 95% a great companion that we thought we trusted well...as long as we didn't take a bone from him.. The reason the dog is still alive is because I beleive it is not a genetic problem, it is our lack of training, and making him know he is not ALFA in our house... I treat the dog like a human child, and realize now, how very wrong that is.. Three days have passed and the dog acts very withdrawn from us, he lays on the floor like he is totally worn out from the event, we are almost afraid to do anything other than feed him, and take him in the back yard. We have made an appointment with a renoun dog behaviorist in Boston to evaluate the dog in 2 days... if this is genetic, there is no hope for him... but I feel we made terrible mistakes, in allowing so many "Cute" things happen and in the dogs mind he was chalking it up to be ALFA.. We LOVE our dog more than words can say. I don't trust him now, but just hope that it can be corrected, I will do what-ever it takes... I just can not euthenize my dog.... he did something unexcuseable, but it may have been our lack of training him... I will have an expert tell us, we created the problem, or it was going to happen anyway, and if it is correctable... any thoughts would be greatly appreciated..." -------------------------- So my thoughts are that this dog can be rehabilitated....It the dog was (basically/acidentally) trained to act this way, it can be untrained. And the dog is only 14 months old. However, I do understand that this dog is a whopping 160 pounds and that is a huge issue. 12. Well, I guess that I am done too. To all of the different "guests" and KP...I have enjoyed talking with all of you. However, it seems that the "powers that be" here at Dog-O are getting tired of the conversation. So I suppose I will just go somewhere and lurk....as usual. :-? 8)
  13. KP -- Out of all that you have said the only thing that I really care about is that you are saying that I am a lier. I do not lie. Things change, situations change, I change my mind, but I do not lie. Now that is not to say that I have never mis-communicated, because (especially when using the written word) I will think that I am being clear and getting my point across, and the other person does not get the message that I entended. And no, I am not copping out and trying to say that it is the other persons fault that they do not understand what I really mean....and I am not using the word mis-communicate to soften what was really a lie. It is only my fault that I have not communicated cleary. But I don't expect you to just believe me for what I say either. You have made up your mind about me and only you can change your mind about me. Oh, and I would have never found your private forum (or even know that it existed) but for the fact that someone posted a link to my private website on your forum and someone else clicked that link to visit my site (and then to top it off, leave me a B/S message). All of those things together led me to your forum. Ano one of them would have just looked like a random visitor. My websites collect all that kind of data for stats and records. And no, that is not illegal. It had nothing to do with hacking. Someone from your forum who did not know better made an ignorant mistake by clicking the link that directed them to my site. Oh well, I wish you all the best.
  14. KP -- Yes you are right, everyone who was banned was banned because of association. I am sorry, but that is exactly true. I (believe it or not) miss a lot of you guys because I loved reading your replies to people....that is when you were being serious and helpful. I see that a couple have made it back onto the board and look forward to reading their posts again. ...Not kissing up (not that you will believe me), but that is what I think.
He along with Katerina (Kaleb), hacked into another real PRIVATE (non-registered) website we were on, ...which by the way is illegal.
One thing that I for sure want to clear up....Adam had no park of my "information gathering". When all of that stuff started, I was just doing my job as Mod and someone (a couple of people) came to my private site to troll. The people who choose to post crap on my site made all of this very personal.....I fought fire with fire. I would HAVE LOVED to see the faces of you all when your user name flashed at the top of your screens when you visited my personal site. Oh, and I did not have to do any hacking....I am a computer geek, not a computer genius.....and I am sure not a hacker. You may think that you have proof that Adam read your PM's. However I don't believe you. (I could be wrong....have been wrong before) But, you might have circumstancial evidence to that fact....Adam may have been able to decipher what you were really talking about by that way that you toned your posts on the board. But I do not think (I do not believe) that Adam was reading anyone PM's. So, you say that Admin has that option on a PHPbb board..... Remember when Adam posted that he needed someone who wanted to trade services to change over to the new forum software? http://www.dogtraining.westhost.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1624&highlight=phpbb My husband did all of that programming. My husband has an Admin login....just like Adam. In fact, hubby has access to parts of that board that Adam does not have a tiny clue about. There is nothing that goes on (as far as the programming) on that board that he, my husband, is not aware of. There is no "hack" added to the Dog Problems board that allows ANYONE, not admin, not mods, not anyone, to read other people's PM's. If a hack such as you are describing exists, we (Adam, Hubby, and I) are not aware that it is available. Besides, why in the world would Adam turn of the PM feature if he could read them??? That I really do not understand. If it was my board (assuming that I could read PM's), and I was trying to squash a mutiny on it, I would NOT turn off the PM's but I would read them like crazy. Information is power. Oh well, You all will continue to think what ever you want. I know that I won't be able to change your minds. I am truely sorry to hear that Richards board is not working. I am sure that he had put a lot of work into setting it up. And even though you guys probably had loads of fun making cracks toward myself (as well as Adam) I always respected Richard. Your Favorite Nazi Moderator, Eva Braun.
  15.
Please answer my questions re do you belive Katz's way is the right way?. please also understand I do not ask people to pay for my knowledege.
I do use some of his methods, yes. But I do not only use his methods. I use a combination of methods depending on what dog I am working with (their temperment, previous training, age, etc).
Secondly stop prostituting yourself for money .........Life and dogs are far more important than that. As it happens I don't want his money but I do want his head.
At least your priorities are right...NOT.
  16.
It isn't advertised as a German Shepherd ar an Akita site so that analogy is absolute BS.
I really do not understand what you meant by this Doglistener.
  17.
This is in response to "Guest" who made reference to the Leerberg site. First I don't know where you got those quotes from, but I am sure many were taken out of context. That site is dedicated to training protection/police/military/shutzhund dogs, not Foo Foo the poodle.
Yes exactly.....what is someone supposed to do when a 100 pound GSD or mal decides to turn on YOU the HANDLER...???? Give it a cookie???? NOT!! :o
  18. From my (albeit tainted) point of view....I moderate that site to help prevent things like that from happening. I am there to enforce whatever rules Adam tells me to enforce, and (hopefully) try and keep the peace while doing that. But I have no sympathy for people who end up "trolling". I like to think that I will be able to 'help' someone who needs it....Maybe you will laugh at that, but that is what I think. I am not here to try and defend Adam as a human (well mostly). I don't even begin to know him well enough to try that. And the only personal dealings that I have had with Adam, he was very nice and very helpful. [And no I am not screwing him, contrary to what some think.] But I chimed in in the beginning just because some things were said that were just not true. And I wanted to set the story straight. And I think that it is outrageous to try to put someone out of business just because that person pissed you off. (talking specifically to Doglistener here.) It is like someone cutting you off in traffic so you decide to 1.) stalk them 2.) get the fired from their job and 3.) ruin their family/life.....basically try to take away every good thing that they have just because they are a crappy driver and they pissed you off. I just think that it is silly/dangerous.....people will end up reaping what they sow.
  19. I have only been a member for a little over a year. I cannot attest to what happened before I joined obiviously. But, in the summer, many people were posting on the board just to stir up trouble. Maybe it was because Adam had stepped on their toes and that was their way of getting back at him, I don't know. [And for all I know, the "guests" that I am talking to could be one or some of those people.] I know that at that time 14 plus people were banned. A couple...more than a couple..... of those people I looked up to. I enjoyed reading their input about training. AND I got a lot of good advice (and some well needed chastisement) from many of them. I digress. Anywho, maybe Adam banned Ken and the others (most recently) to try to avoid that same thing that happened this summer. I don't really know. The only thing that I remember that might have had attributed to Ken's being banned is that he and Adam have had words before. This might have been the preverbial last straw. I did like Ken and enjoyed reading his posts. I had even corresponded with him when I was trying to decide about changing Kaleb's diet. He was a big help to me.
  20.
oh hey, BTW Kat. I was wondering since you are the moderator of DogProblems maybe you can enlighten me on why GSD Ken was banned? I just noticed this today, much to my surprise...someone must have itchy fingers over there.
I have no idea why Ken was banned. I was out of town from Wednesday before Thanksgiving until Wednesday of this week....I was SHOCKED to see that there was more drama. Thursday I had an e-mail saying that Ken had been banned. I do not know why. I like moderating the board. I don't moderate because I have a great knowledge of dogs, but because I have computer knowledge. I am learning about dogs. I am also not there to make friends. It is not that I am a unfriendly person or unsocialable, but I prefer to get to know people in person. And I began coming to the forum to learn about dogs. I have learned a lot.
  21.
I think he does have a great book and I don't feel that people should judge training they don't know anything about. I feel you should learn as much about the training (not necissarily using it) before you dismiss it...but thats my opinion.
Sounds like we are very close to being on the same page...about that anyway. Anywho, we all have a great deal of room for improvement. Adam's may be PR. Mine is being .....well I have more need for improvement than I care to publicize. I just got my feathers ruffled when Doglistener went on this "we have to stop this man" kick. I have enjoyed talking with you.....I just wish I knew who I was talking to.
  22. Say what you will about the forum and the way that it is run. It is Adam's forum, Adam's money pays for the forum, so Adam makes the rules for the forum. So, if you don't like the way that the Dog Problems forum is administrated/moderated, etc. go elsewhere. That is a no brainer. However, I have a problem with people who would make it their "life's goal" to destroy a man just because they do not agree with his methods. Adam is not a dog abuser. He does not teach people to abuse dogs. His book is not about ripping a dogs head off with a prong collars nor shocking them into submission with an e-collar.
OH! And they are not all trainers..In fact one regular poster who is not a trainer, pushes his product just admitted that she has no dogs and has never even read his book.
I saw that too....troubling. However, all of the information that she posts is (at least) a regurgatation of parts of Adam's book....I guess she just restates what others (who have read the book) have said.
his rediculous rules. no email's, no pm's
This started back in June during another upset. I have to go for now. Hubby's here to take me to dinner.
  23. I was going to post this as "guest" but I just got a new flame suit. :o DogListener -- You are taking many different bits of information out of context, twisting them, and making Adam look like a two-headed monster. There are many ways to "skin a cat"....There are many different ways to train dogs. Not all training methods work well with all dogs. The Dog Problem forum is there to promote Adam's training methodologies. He has created it for the express purpose of helping people (dog owners) that no one else could help. When Adam was personally training dogs for customers, people (from all over the world) brought their dogs to him because they had no where else to turn. It was Adam or have their dog put to sleep. Do you think that it is wrong for him to promote his own training methodologies on a website that he pays for with his own money? Do you think that it is wrong for him to stipulate, dictate even, what kinds of conversations he deems acceptable for the very website that his money pays for? Does he not have ownership of that very forum? Dog Problems Forum is NOT a PUBLIC forum. http://www.dogproblems.com/dogtalk/ "2. THIS IS NOT A PUBLIC FORUM. WHILE EVERYONE IS ALLOWED TO POST, DOGPROBLEMS.COM STAFF MODERATORS RESERVE THE RIGHT TO BAN ANY MEMBER WHO IS DEEMED RUDE, OFFENSIVE, CRUEL, OR ADVOCATES A TRAINING APPROACH WHICH DIRECTLY CONTRADICTS WHAT WE'VE FOUND TO BE "REAL WORLD" TECHNIQUES. IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN OPEN MIND ABOUT THE HUMANE USE OF CHOKE CHAINS, PINCH COLLARS, OR ELECTRONIC REMOTE TRAINING COLLARS... GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. " You are not required to agree with his training methods. But the fact that you would go elsewhere and publically criticize his person with the intention of putting him out of business borders on the edge of slander. Prong/pinch collars, choke collars, e-collars (and many other dog training items) are only tools. Any training tool can be misused and even abused. I have seen perfectly healthy dogs hung over a fence dead in a regular flat nylon collar. I have seen owners take a normal leash and make a slip noose so that they had a way to choke their own dog. The training tools are not the problem, lack of owner education is. People often purchase a cute little puppy without even beginning to think about the responsiblity of dog ownership. Many dog owners are uneducated, irresponsible, and just down right abusive or neglectful. Once the cute puppy phase is over, the problems set in. Then people dump the innocent, untrained, ill-mannered dog in rural areas, or tie it to a tree in the yard. The dog's life is but a shadow of what it could have been with some education. But you say the type of education that Adam gives people is bad/cruel/worthless, etc. That is your opinion. You prefer gentler methods and that is fine. I personally started my pup with purely positive methods. When I began to have problems that my positive trainer could not help with, I began to search. I found Adam website and book. By combining the methods taught to me by my personal trainer (PP methods) and the correction methods taught by Adam through his books and videos, I have a well behaved, obedient 1 year old male Akita. Adam does not encourage people to abuse their dogs. He does urge them, however, to learn to communicate with their dogs in a way that they instinctively understand. If you feel so very strongly about this, why did you choose to go to another dog forum to bad-mouth Adam? Why not just openly tell him how you feel? IN FACT why not take Adam up on his $10,000 challenge??? http://www.dogproblems.com/challenge.htm ...and yes I know that this says that it is expired, but you never know. And I will be back. I think that you have misquoted some information and I want to set the record straight.
  24. I know that I have not been around for a while, but I figured that I would put in my 2cents anyway. :) An alternative to graining the chicken pieces is taking a hammer to them to crush them up. The bones are very soft when uncooked and the dog will be able to chew them up. However, by smashing them with a hammer first, you know for sure that *at least the bone pieces are small*. When I first started feeding Raw, I noticed bone pieces in my dog's poop. HOWEVER, once his body adjusted to the new diet, the bone pieces were no more...they were digested just like everything else. Also, keep in mind that grinding or breaking up the bones with a hammer will not provide the dentle help that whole bones would provide. When the dog eats whole bones, the crunching will stimulate the gums, clean the teeth, and also satisfy the dogs urge to chew. Also, if you add a little apple cider vinegar to the dogs food, it will help break down the bones....anyone else remember putting a chicken bone in vinegar in elementary school? After being left for a while, the bone breaks down the the point of feeling rubbery, not hard or bone like at all. Something to consider.
  25. I am very leary of chows too. AND I HATE IT when people ask me, "Where did you get Kaleb?" I just ignore them or put them off. The Akita is NOT for the average dog owner.....Lately, some days anyway, I have been wondering if I am going to get through his adolescence without shaking the snot out of him or having a nervous breakdown. Other days, he is AWESOME and I remember exactly WHY I love the breed.
