  1. You guys are so smart... Really! Are you children? I wasn't going to respond at all. Actually who is being the troll here???? Crested, Katty and pollysmith... it seems. A troll is someone who tries to provoke an argument. When was I trying to argue. I even ignored direct attacks. I came on the site for advice. This has been mostly a waste of time. I have learned a few things but I came on the site to get helpful advice and not get in some argument with people that act like children and have too much extra time on their hands. I appreciate those who gave me sensible advice without attacking as I mentioned before. I have been using it for over 2 years.... but I will definately think twice before coming to this site again. I think you guys need to remember why this forum exists. I believe it exists to help people and discuss dog topics... not to attack people and have a few people "rule" the forum. I guess I could have just said "whatever  "
  2. Actually I just came back from the Vet before reading this post.... my DSL has been down since I did the first post. I took the female puppies in for spaying. I asked the Vet and they said that dogs have a first heat around 6 months which is "hidden", so they don't always have the visual signs... but anyway they checked the dogs and said they aren't in heat. I plan to get the others neutered to... so I'm not sure why everyone was thinking i wasn't getting my dogs fixed. Also it's not as bad as it seems only 2 of the dogs are mine (Great Dane and Shitzu). I also have home for all the puppies and I have been able to pick and choose who gets the dogs because I have a list of people who want them. I haven't breed for money... I'm not even going to break even after getting them all their shots and spaying/neutering them. I've kept them so long b/c I wanted to make sure they had all their shots. I was planning on spaying the female after she had the first set of puppies, however she went into to heat earlier than I was told she would go into heat. I was also out of town when she went into heat. The female is not my dog but my fiance's family's dog who I took in after she had the puppies so I could take care of them. This time I'm getting her spayed as soon as the vet says I can... they told me after 5 more weeks because she had puppies less than 2 weeks ago. I take very good care of my dogs. I even have someone that lives on the property to help me take care of them. I think there must be another female dog in the neighborhood that is in heat because the great dane is acting crazy. I realized after I posted this message that that must be the issue. Last time he was acting crazy like this it passed after a few days and they dogs became best friends again. I appreciate those who wrote me without attacking me. I will be back down to 2 dogs soon. I was just looking for some advice not a fight.
  3. I'm not sure what to do. I've had them both sense they were puppies. They have been best buddies. (both males) I have 9 dogs and one of the females went into heat and the great dane became very aggressive toward the other male shitzu... which made sense so I separated them. Now I have 4 puppies, the mother, great dane and shitzu the other two males (rottie and mix rottie) are kept separated in the other half of my yard. The female gave birth again about 1 week ago. Her other puppies are about 5 to 6 months. Could the female puppies be going into heat? I don't see any signs. What else could be causing this sudden agression... it's been going on for 1 day. Any ideas on how to handle this? Thanks for any advice.
  4. Well there is no rush. I just want to do the right thing. I am also working on the house breaking.
  5. A person I know has a Rottweiler and Corgi mix... it looks just like a Rott but has very short legs. He was very cute.
  6. thanks! Ok so I should wait until the mother is ready. They are already eating solid puppy food & drinking water.
  7. I actually have a poodle Shih tzu mix so the hair is a mix. I had it trimmed down short b/c I was told he still has his baby hair and that it will grow back thicker. He is 8 months old. Someone recommended to keep cutting it short for a while then give him a teddy bear cut. I don't know I think he looks best with the long wild hair but it takes a lot of combing. I would post a picture but I don't know how to do it quickly.
  8. I am taking care of a friend's female dog and puppies. The puppies are 5 weeks old. I heard the mother is suppose to stop them from breast feeding but this mother letting them continue. I can take the mother back to my friend's house but I wanted it to limit the trauma. They were separated one day and the mother was having a fit. What is the process and when should I do it? Thanks,
  9. I also used a trainer who uses the clicker. She is certified with Triple Crown Academy. Is this a well known & good certification?
  10. I was looking for the diff types of poodle hair cuts. Do you guys know of where I can find a list of the types of hair cuts with pictures of each? Thanks,
  11. I'm open to hear people thoughts which is why I posted to the board. I'm just trying to explain why I even thought of breeding. When I was in the US I would have never thought of breeding any dog. All my dog's were neutered or spayed and came from the pound. Here there are not so many options. In Europe you can get any breed you want.
  12. Even though he is mixed breed his mother was a great dane and my dog is a very large dog which is valued in Jamaica. I've never seen another dog his size in Jamaica. People have even tried to steal him. The puppies could be worth close to $300 US each. If you realize the island is small and there are very limited breeds (mainly shitzus, poodles, Rotweillers, dobermans, German Shepards). So some mixed breeds are in demand. I would like a full Great Dane but they are close to $1000 US from the one breeder on the island. I would want to breed him with a full Great Dane. I love the Great Dane's personality in general. Even though he is "mixed" he is a big teddy bear. Many people even prefer the mixed breeds b/c they are known to not have as many health problems as the pure breed dogs on the island.... which could be a myth.

    electronic fences

i've thought about using a combination of fence and electric fence. I am having problems with my dog going over my wall around my yard. I thought he was only going over the 6 feet wall but I found out today he is also going over an even higher fence (it's atleast 7 feet wall - cement and chain link on top). What do you guys think about that?
  14. well i thought about neutering but I heard that it will take 6 to 8 months and it might not even help. He is about 2 and 1/2 years. I've seen very agressive neutered dogs. People are always asking me to breed him which I haven't already. I haven't done it yet b/c I have mixed feelings about it. The dog breeds are very limited in Jamaica. There is only 1 breeder on the island. I had started him doing agility when he was a puppy but someone thought it would actually increast his abilities to get over and under fences. I will discuss with the other trainer who does positive training. Thanks for your advice.
  15. I need your help... I have 2 serious problems. I moved so that my dog (Great Dane/Catahoula mix - intact male) would have a bigger yard to run around and more freedom. I was renting and had no control of the gate being openned... my dog runs out through the gate. I moved to my own house... but it came with 2 dogs (a rotwieller and mix breed - both intact adult males). I wanted to keep the dogs for security. I live in Kingston which can be dangerous. Anyway, the person that owned the house before me had many dogs... so there are 3 kennels, 1 fenced in area and the main yard that is walled by a cement wall with a chain link fence above that and razor wire around most of the yard.... Problem #1: I say all this b/c my great Dane mix is getting out of the yard but whereever I put him he gets out. I say him go over the over 5 foot wall along the front of the yard. He puts in front legs up on the top of the wall and pulls his body over the wall! I couldn't believe it until I saw it myself. I have thought of diff ways to deal with the situation which have been suggested to me. BTW i still have the problem when I open the gate that he runs out. I have to chain him before driving in the yard. I need to get in a quick as possible b/c it can be dangerous to be too long at the gate. a. Make the wall higher b. use an electric fence c. use one of those corrective collars to try to train him not to go over the fence. Problem #2: he is trying to kill the other 2 dogs. He bites there necks and won't let go. Pouring water to get them to separate for a second is the only way I have been able to stop them. I had to learn the hard way that even when I thought they were separated he got out. Now I know where I can keep the dogs separate. But Kingston (my dog's name) has even grabbed one of the dog's noses through the metal bars on the windows. I had Kingston in the house and the other dogs in the yard. I was horrible. I have a training that has come a few times and it seems to be improving. The trainer has even been able to get the rot and my dog to sit next to each other while on a leash. I still haven't been able to keep them in the same area together. The fighting at the fence has decreased since the training. The current trainer uses a choke chain for correction. In the paste I have used a trainer that uses the clicker, but with this type of issue I wasn't sure if that would work. My dogs gets so agressive I don't think any kind of reward would work... am I wrong. I prefer the reward based training. What type of training would you suggest? Can I stop the fighting? Thanks!
