__crazy_canine__
Grrr.... my mom has bought into that bullshit the media is spewing out about pits. She thinks they are dangerous and is worried about our cat. Plus she said if any kids ever come over she doesnt want to worry about them getting mauled.  Bottom line is I cant have a pit.  ..... I cant even think of what kind of dog I would want besides that. Help? I know I want the same short, glossy coat. Preferablly medium to extra large in size. I dont want an independent dog... I want a snuggler and a playful dog but yet laid back. I was thinking Great Dane or boxer. Of course mixes are always an option but Im just getting an idea for type of dog. ..... GRRR IM STILL SO MAD I CANT HAVE A PIT BULL
Lucky Chaos
Pit Bulls arn't really great first dogs anyway. They take a lot of work and don't forget you'll always be dealing with people putting down your breed and your dog. Plus if the dogs turns out dog/animal aggressive you have a whole new issue to deal with, and a big one at that. Don't forget you have the rest of your life to own pits. AllAmericanPUP
American Bulldog!!! :D
BuddysMom
From my experience the most cuddly and laid back are mutts.
abker17
Wow, that seems like it was a quick turn around. Doesn't your mom know you work with pit bulls almost constantly at straydog? :-? I dunno, it just seems odd and frustrating to me that your mom would turn around and say you can't have a pittie so quickly, when you obviously have such a passion for the breed. But LC is correct in saying pitties aren't the best first time dog. I'd say go for a mutt (maybe a pittie mix?) but I might be a bit biased.

Maybe a Boxer type dog would be a good fit?
__crazy_canine__
Yes my mom knows I work with them so I guess its just the idea of a pit fulltime that scares her? :x Kendalyn, those dogs are really cute but my mom would take one look and think "pit" for the ones I like. I would like to have an AmBull, or mix of one, but its probably to pit-like. No matter what im adopting, not buying but who knows my mom might change her mind again. Ill be checking petfinder all the time. :)
Guest Anonymous
Thats too bad. I have found that a well bred APBT is absolutely the best dog with children!! Would some pictures of an APBT playing with kids (2,3,6,9,11,12) help her see the light?
__crazy_canine__
I explained that to her, Hmmmm. I dont want to bug her about it anymore though... I guess I should just be happy I might get a dog at all.

Or is pit bull / cat really not a good combo and therefore CC's mom has a valid concern? I am not being critical I'm really curious. There is tons of evidence that they can be great with children but I have never heard one way or the other about felines.
Guest Anonymous
about 5 years ago I had my GrCh in the house and he wouldnt mess with the cats at all... Im sure I have a pic of them lying around somewhere. I think if you get a pup and raise it around him it'll be okay. Of course, you couldnt leave them alone (but you cant leave a pit running around with any animals).
imported_Kat
What about a staffordshire bull terrier or would that be lumped as a pit bull in america? :-? I think a boxer would indeed be a super idea

pomeranians
Boxers are wonderful. If your mom is OK with them then that is what I would suggest. Or a mix, I'm sure theres one out there that fits your crtieria. :)

Ash
If it's a first dog and your looking for a larger breed, I'd highly recommend a lab (i know over popular), or a boxer. I think a american bulldog is a great option though next to a pitbull... If you wanted to go smaller *which it doesn't sound like* you could get a Boston Terrier, or a Pug.. Those are cute! :D
Rowie-the-Pooh
It can happen. This is from another forum. A lot of people say their pits get along great with the family cats, but not outside cats.
My heart! :iloveyou: That sucks that you can't get a Pit, CC. But I'm sure good things are coming your way. You totally deserve the best dog in the world. :D
Cairn6
I say just keep on visiting shelters and rescues and see which dog that your mother will allow interests you. I have never ever gone to pick out a dog with a breed in mind. Not ever. A lot of times you get an idea of what you want but the one you fall in love with is completely different. If your mom is going back and forth than it really isn't fair to her to keep asking.
__crazy_canine__
Oh I just LOVE Great Danes!! They're SOOOO big!! (I LOVE big dogs  )
Oh I know!!! Ive always said my first dog is going to be either a pit or a Dane.
You totally deserve the best dog in the world.
Aw, thanks! :D
Has your mom spent any time where you work?
Yeah she has but I dont think she ever pays attention to which dogs I always favor, which is the huge lap dogs or pitties. I dont think she understands that I cant just have ANY kind of dog and be satisfied... it has to be a dog with the characteristics I like, in both looks and personality.
I have known several people though whose Pit got along fine with the cat for years and then one day sh*t hits the fan.
Thats the biggest reason I would reconsider a pit. As much as I want one Id hate to witness my cat being ripped up like a doll. :(
A lot of times you get an idea of what you want but the one you fall in love with is completely different.
Youre completely right :) And I plan on just going to shelters and going with whoever my heart chooses but I just want to keep in mind what I most want. Ash, I really dont want a lab. Even though in personality a lot of them are the sweetest dogs, I like to be different and having a lab is like you said very common. I wouldnt mind having a small dog I guess but since they go so quick Id much rather get a big dog.
kendalyn
You are young and will have lots of years to own whatever kind of dog you want. I think it would be a very good idea to be happy with whatever your mom allows. If it were a choice between a lab or no dog at all, would you really choose not to have a dog?
