Subliminal "good" Pit Bull press

Recommended Posts

Does anyone watch "It Takes A Thief" (I think it comes on TLC)? It's basically where two former burglars talk people into letting them break into their homes to show them how slack their security is while the homeowners watch it on camera as it's happening. Then the host/former burglars totally revamp the homeowner's security with new locks, systems, whatever they need, and tell them what to do to make their homes more unattractive and inaccessible to housebreakers.

Anyway, I was watching one this weekend where the homeowners had a couple of dogs in the house. They were sure the "burglar" wouldn't be able or want to get in because they had the dogs there and were positive the dogs would be a deterrent. One looked to be a pure Pit Bull and the other was a mix, maybe Pit mix. The guy broke into the house and the dogs welcomed the burglar with open arms. Even the "vicious" Pit Bull was wagging and smiling as the burglar loaded up all sorts of loot.

I just thought it was kind of a neat subliminal "good" Pit press. That big ol' bad Pit Bull was just as friendly and glad as can be to have someone there, even if they were carrying off everything the family owned. I wonder how many of the anti-Pit people happened to see this and if they were just a little surprised. :)

I meant to watch that but forgot. I heard, though, that they didn't mention the dog was a Pit Bull. So I'd bet that a lot of anti-pit people won't even recognize it as a pit bull, kind of like the people who pet pit bulls out in public, find out what breed they're petting, and leap back in fear. Who knows, though, maybe some will recognize them for what they are :)

I saw that episode and lauged how the homeowners were so shocked that the dogs didn't attack or anything. I also loved it when the theif gave the dogs the rawhide bones and the dogs were like "Food! Yum!"

I totally agree. Hot! That is a great show. I didn't see the pit bulls, but I did see one where there was a house of guys and when they did all the "makeover" stuff and came back to check to see if they could get in, lthe owner had left the front door unlocked!

My husband and I watched that show. He was very surprised that the dogs just followed the guy around tails wagging. We kinda sat there mouths wide open in total disbelief that the dogs were letting this guy toss stuff around. I thought it was pretty funny though.

well, using dogs as a deterrent depends on a couple of things. what in your house does the burglar want? Now these burglars are breaking in because they're being paid for it, but in a real scenario most burglars will avoid a house with a dog unless there is something specific inside they want, like original picasso's, or priceless antique jewelry...

then, no matter what kind of dog, it wont stop them. they'll just kill it with a silencer and be on their way. but the average home break in, where they plan to steal tv's and stereo's, a dog making a lot of noise will generally deter that. not every time, but more often than not.
the reason is not that the burglar is afraid of the dog, bit of the noise the dog makes. in some situations, the yappier the better. burglars dont like noise, its why alarms drive them off, because it alerts neighbors that something is going on and they may call the police. for an insignificant haul, its not worth the risk, especially if the house 4 doors down has no dogs, and their neighbors have no dogs.

did the Pits even bark? these tv burglars knew going in what kind of dogs these people had. and a good burglar knows what dogs are likely to bite and which ones arent, if there is something inside he is determined to have...

which makes me laugh because Free would throw them. if they could get past the nasty bark-and-bay fest these two go through, they would discover Laurel hiding under the desk, and Free, the Lab X that looks almost purebred Lab, standing there threatening to kill them if they moved. NOT Lab-like....she's an ace in the hole.

I really don't think the dogs even barked. They pretty much welcomed him like he was one of there own! It was odd. Maybe they could sense it wasn't real. Dogs can sense the way people feel, and since it was a fake breakin then maybe they didn't see him as "bad." Does that make any sense? It does in my head, but often it doesn't to everyone around me. My husband is usually looking at me like "WHAT." I can just see all of you doing it too.

No it makes perfect sense. I've had friends come over and walk in and my dog hasn't even barked and he dosn't even know some of my friends. I think it would be toally different if someone came in with an evil intent. I get what your saying.

That is really funny! I wish I would have watched that episode. I'll have to Tivo it :)

My pit mix is hardly a force to be reckoned with...

It would be either:

He'd bark his head off and try to escort them to the door by a pant leg (his standard routine when someone new comes over)

OR

If they brought him a treat (he's partial to squeaky balls and fruit snacks) he'd get a goofy grin on his face, escort them to the couch by the pant leg, and proceed to sit on their lap and lick them repeatedly.

Yep, there's a reason pits don't have the reputation of being good guard dogs! !
