My beagle is only 5 months. We got him when he turned 2 months old. We were told that the earlier we get a second dog for dexter that the better he will feel unlonely. is this true? if so, what breeds are good companions for beagles?

I would suggest waiting actually. Especially if you are thinking of getting another puppy. One puppy/adolescent is hard enough, without adding a second to the mix. There are so many needs to address at this age - training, bonding, medical - that I have always prefered to see a dog through that before adding another baby or teenager to the house.

Good Luck! :D

I think it depends on the individual dog, by like most said.....dogs are pack animals.
I had Sassafrass my JRT for 4 months (she was 6mos. old) when we got Gretchen (Lab/Rott) at 8weeks old......
Sassy did fine with Gretchen and 3 months after that we added a wee kitten to the mix.
They were all fine with each other.... as a matter of fact little Sassy took over mothering the kitten even at her young age.
And finally 2 months after Kato Kat arrived we added another JRT puppy to the mix !!! And everyone gets along famously !!!
And all the dogs are female, the kat is the only male. All are spayed/neutered.
