DogPaddle
I was hoping a couple knowledgable dog folks would do some of the breed selectors and tell me if they think they work. I like doing them but some seem better than others. If anyone has time, try one of the ones below and let me know what you think. I like the ones that ask about excercise, activity level, suitability with children/dogs/strangers and make some attempt to match using more than dog size, yard size and have you ever had a dog before. ShatteringGlass
That first link isnt a good one, I just did it. I said I want a short-haired dog with low grooming maintenance, and they suggest Golden, Portuguese Water Dog, English Cocker, Keeshond, and Standard Poodle in the first 10 they list for me. Those dogs are not short-coated and have a high-maintence grooming need.
imported_nea
I've done them all, at one time or another. I like the animal planet one quite alot. My favorite would be the last on the list, eukanuba's. I really like how they ask how much training you're going to be doing- thats one thing thats missing on many others. Also, they ask what you want to do with your dog. I found that very helpful too. The breeds I got were mostly breeds that I am very fond of, and actually will have someday. What I didn't like about it (and many other breed selectors) is that they ask about the "Outdoor Space". I always find that hard to answer. I live in an appartment, so I don't have a yard of my own. But I do have big fields and a woods right across the street. So I answered "Acreage", but I'm not sure thats what they mean or not.
DogPaddle
Thanks Mei Mei, Nea and Shattering Glass. I appreciate your feedback. Anyone who has time is welcome as well. We have a bit of a problem with dog owners in my neighbourhood so I may be working with one of the animal groups in the city to make flyers about not chaining your dog, not leaving them in the yard all the time, excercise, training etc and we might if we are very lucky be able to do a proactive educational thing regarding choosing the right breed for your lifestyle etc.
pomeranians
Well, I've taken all those tests before, and like them all. I don't really get some tests though, like the ivillage one. It asks how much exercise you want to give your dog. I really have no prefrence on that, but "no prefrence" is not an option.
Rusty&Chip
I did the Eukanuba one and it worked very well. Another breed selector that is good (not as good as the Eukenuba one though) is this one: http://www.puppyfinder.com/selector/ They both gave me very similar results, I think they are probably some of the better tests for this that I have taken.
