Has my border collie had a stroke

Hi Hope someone can shed some light here.

We have three dogs and one a blue merle border collie (male) who is 8 this year had a problem start last October 2003.

We noticed that his right eye as you faced him was not right, he did not blink and when he slept it did not shut. Also on a couple of occasions he fell over as if drunk when turning quickly or from lying down.

We took him straight to the vet (french) who was very concerned and sent us straight to the huge vet clinic in Limoges to see a specialist.

They carried out a lumbar puncture to see if he had meningitis, tested his chloresterol and found nothing and came to the conclusion he had had a stroke. We had to take him back after a month and during that time massaged round his eye. He could then blink and still does but reaction time is slower than the other eye, he still does not shut it completely but almost, he does not fall over and he is very happy and playful all the time.

Then about 4 months ago we noticed that the left side of his face seemed to be drooping, his left ear was down and when you look at him face on his nose seems bent! The vet can find nothing wrong.

He is lively and very very happy.

He is a sensitive dog, hates loud noises, thunder storms terrify him, cars backfiring that sort of thing.

Anyone out there experienced this sort of thing before.

Sounds like he could have had a stroke. .. there is no way the dr can test for a stroke? I would call the vet and asks if there aretests to have done to see if he's having strokes, and then see if they can run tests to see what is causing them, old age etc. i'm not to sure about strokes in people, but i know that when my grandma had her stroke, the dr's new it right away and then they knew what caused it, clotting from a surgery she had. mabye they could put him on blood thiners to get rid of any clots that might be causing the stroke?
I'm sure there is someone else here that can answer you question better then me. sorry i'm not much help..
good luck!

Poppy had a stroke - it was a Saturday afternoon, she fell over side way about 6 times- Our normal vet was off duty for the weekend, we phoned the emergency vet We then took Poppy to see her ( Poppy was almost 11 years old) The vet was a young girl straight out of vet school. She checked Poppy over said her heart beat was erratic. She gave us tablets to stop her having another stroke. She took the tablets for the rest of her life. She died at the age of 13 which is very old for a shap-pei

Another (slim) possibility is Vestibular Syndrome. It does not sound as though your dog is exhibiting the full gamut of signs for this but just in case, here are a couple of links to more info:
