Post the pics and tell the stories of how you found your rescue baby...

I adopted Magic in Novemeber of 2001 when she was 1 yrs old. She was transfered from another shelter because they couldn't adopt her out. She was at the shelter where I got her for over a month. She was on her last days.
She was treated for everything from mange to kennel cough. She hated other dogs too. She was a big dirty German Shepherd (cross?) but I had to have her!
I cherish everyday I have with her and I spoil her rotten because she deserves it!
I love her so much!
This is my rescue baby Magic -
I drew this picture of her from one of my favorite photos when we were at the cottage and she soaking wet from swimming in the lake.

Free was rescued as a puppy, from a "mis-mating" that wasnt supposed to happen. Her onwer wanted to sell her as a "purebred" German Shepherd (with FLOPPY ears?) and once I pointed that out, she gave her to me for free, Hence her name. I found out later that the ones that did not get adopted were given over to the shelter...(GRRRRR!!!!!!!)

Laurel was a field trialed Foxhound. Once retired, either the rescues adopt them, or they get put down (kinda like Greyhounds)

Freebee, the Lab Mix.

(and she's as mixed up as a Lab can be, believe me    )

*squealing with delight*
Oh, let me tell you about my rescue babies! :D

Simon was picked up as a stray. I used to see him darting about on a four lane major highway all the time on my way to and from work. I would stop, but he would disappear. One day when I stopped, he jumped right into my car as if he'd known me all his life. No one ever came forward to claim him and he's been here for about 3-4 years.

Tucker was adopted from our local shelter in '98. I had learned that adult black dogs were the most difficult to adopt out, so we went to the shelter and asked to see the large black dogs. Tucker chose us and has been with us since. He actually completed training and became certified as a therapy dog through Delta Society. Tucker rocks!

Peanut was given to us by a BYB who couldn't "get rid of" all of the puppies. It was some dramatic story about a daughter who bred the dogs, mom got stuck with the responsibility, yadda, blah and so forth, but she gave Peanut to us outright just to get rid of her. This is my little traveling buddy.

Chico was obtained when some guy threatened to dump the whole litter of puppies (Chico and his littermates) over a bridge if he didn't get rid of them. I was driving trucks at the time and stowed him away. Chico is actually the eldest of our dog bunch and was originally an only (dog) child.

Perry & Pauly were adopted through a Florida Poodle rescue group. They are believed to be littermates, they were for sure kennelmates, but I adopted them a year apart. They are absolutely inseparable.

Devin was originally a foster. He belonged to a groom client who gave him up at the age of eight months. I suspect it was because he was extremely aggressive and she didn't know how to handle it. She just simply said she didn't have time to "handle him right." Devin was neutered and discovered to have several health problems, one being severe hip dysplasia and bad knees. It is believed that some of his snappiness was due to being in constant pain. He still occasionally has "issues," but is a much nicer dog than he was before since we know how to handle him (making sure to support his rear end when picking him up, limiting any jumping, that sort of thing). He was placed in two other homes where it didn't work out, so Devin stayed on as a permanent resident here. Actually, I'm glad it worked out that way. We absolutely adore him and could never part with him now. He's my other traveling buddy.

Rocco is our most recent adoptee. He was found on a PetFinder ad by another member of this forum. When I read about Rocco's story, we couldn't help but offer him a home. Rocco had been active in competitive obedience, agility, and therapy work, but had become paraplegic and unable to use his rear legs. His former family ended up giving him up (I'm not questioning their intentions... from all I saw, they did love him very much) and he went into Dobe rescue which is who we went through to get him. Rocco is an absolute joy to have around and we love him dearly.

Two of my other dogs here, Fred & Missy, were pet store purchases. This was years before I knew any better and back when I thought a "registered" dog meant a "good" dog. Please don't stone me. I'm now very active in rescue and working hard to redeem myself for all the years of irresponsible dog ownership.

Aren't you glad you asked??

Oh this is going to be fun.

I'll go in age order

CJ- 10 years old - Purchased from a BYB in March 1994 by my parents for my sister. My sister got married in 1999 and took CJ and her American Eskimo Dee at that time. In May of 2003 Dee was PTS due to congestive heart failure. After that my sister started having complications with her pregnancy and CJ started marking in her house and other unwanted behaviors. With my sisters complications she just couldn't emotionally handle his behaviors. So she called me thinking that a buddy is what he needed. Seems she was right because as I type this he's curled up with my Aussie/Lab mix Bobbie (He's known her all of her life).

<img src=http://img17.photobucket.com/albums/v51/JTDinger/Dogs/IM000268.jpg>

Bobbie-6 years old-Aussie/Lab mix. Recieved to family June 1998. Mom has a friend who works for a real estate title company. Well the friend's bosses son got Bobbie from a BYB to give to his girlfriend as a present. Well girlfriends mom took one look at her and said FORGET IT! He didn't realize she was going to be a "big dog". So mom's friend called her and well dad's birthday was coming up so mom took her. Mom and dad kept her until March of 2003 when she came to live with us and her Buddy Ariel (My parents purchased in Jan of 1998 and came with me because I wanted her so she won't be included here).
(Bobby is the one to the left watching everyone else)
<img src=http//img17.photobucket.com/albums/v51/JTDinger/IM000900.jpg>

Belle 3 year old Beagle- May 2001 (Thursday before mothers day)- I was waiting to drop my then 1st grade son off at school when I see this little flea bitten long bodied, long eared tri colored thing. When she reached the school gate kids started kcking her and chasing her into the street and into traffic. I was determined to stay out of it and let the teachers and crossing guard handle it. When the kids picked up a traffic cone and no one did anything I told my son to stay put and ran out to get her I picked her up between kicks and hits and fussed at the kids and then told off the teachers and crossing guard (Don't ya know they can't do a thing if it happens outside the school gates). I put her in my car and drove to the front of the school, carried her into the office and when asked to leave I told them to call the cops I wanted those kids punished for what they did. Their parents were called and I had words with each parent over how their kids treated animals. I tried for a month to find her owner (ads in papers, signs on light poles and in vet offices) by that time I had already gotten her all of her shots, started treatment for demodex and was DONE (Hear me I said I was DONE) with this little short legged mangy mutt who didn't fit into my family at all. I made the decision to take her to the shelter (didn't volunteer with rescue at this point). I bathed her up and got her stuff together to get her the heck out of dodge. She rolled on her back and just whined and cried as I picked her up and well instead of the shelter I went to petsmart and bought her a new crate, dog bowl, collar, leash and harness. Of course my husband who had DARED me to take her to the shelter was laughing at me. Mothers day every year I am thankful for her coming along. She is one of two travel buddies (CJ being the other) and is welcome at all family functions because everyone saw how bad off she was when she showed up and they see her now and can't believe the difference. From a mangy flea covered, skin and bones mutt to my barrel body garbage gut!

To make her story even longer I have to say that she has been a big help with the fosters. There have been some afraid of grass (Honestly he wouldn't walk on it) and she got him too, we have had some that seemed terminally afraid and I paired them up with her and she did wonders for them. Now that I work with LARGE dogs she isn't as inclined to spend time with them and you can see that she's not as happy. I am on the list for a puppy..she does well with them. (List meaning I'm willing to foster a puppy and when one can't find a foster home I'm notified.)
<img src=http://img17.photobucket.com/albums/v51/JTDinger/Dogs/belle_in_raincoat_2_28_02_3.jpg>

Gretchen-ACD (mix?) 1.5 years old (guess)- Came to me as a foster in August of 2003. She was a foster dog (hence the guest the rescue was NO good at even getting close to the right age and would often fudge it younger than a dog was) who came to me because the "shelter director" didn't like barky-hyper dogs so she came to me for fostering. Not long after she got her the Shelter director and I had a HUGE falling out over my pulling an Anatolian for NASRN (Before I started fostering for them) because I should "Only work with ONE rescue at a time" (Thank you for telling me how to live my life idiots). I wasn't going to adoption days where she would even be making an appearance so Gretchen didn't go to adoption days from September to December. The one time in December a guy came in who fell in love with her and her book of tricks. I thought I made it clear to him that if he let her get the best of him even one time all bets were off and that she would run his house. Soon as she was adopted I told the rescue president I QUIT! I was tired of getting their "problem" dogs (just training issues really) and if they weren't willing to allow me to foster for another group who needed me also then I was done! GONE! FINISHED! So I left that day only to get a phone call two days later saying that either I take this one Lab pup who barked to much or he was going to be PTS. I couldn't take him. I had to much going on and REFUSED to have them place blame on me for the whole ordeal. (Not to mention I offered three months before to take him and they said NO)

Well after Gretchen was in her "new home" for a week and a half I got a frantic phone call from a crying adult male saying that he couldn't keep her and had called the rescue and they said they would take her and put her to sleep and refund his money. Seems that he treated her with "Kid gloves" and now she was taking advantage of that. She would get on the couch and when they "asked her to get off" she would growl. I tried to talk to him about how to handle it and NILIF and he said he couldn't do it and his wife no longer trusted her. He asked if I would PLEASE come get her and that he realized he would loose his adoption fee he didn't care he didn't want her to die. She's still here and doing well. Hyper as all get out but no growling at people or anything.

<img src=http://img17.photobucket.com/albums/v51/JTDinger/Dogs/gretchen_smile_crop.jpg>

Prissy-APBT (mix?) 1.5-2 years old. Found in Uptown New Orleans by a lady on the cat board who couldn't keep her so she brought her to me to foster until a "rescue could be found and she could be transported). Well needless to say a rescue was never found or a forever home so she's been here since July 2003! (All this on top of having a baby in Jan 2003) We decided in Feb of this year to keep her for ourselves. She's hubby's sweet girl and she's USUALLY good about avoiding the baby when she does her zoomies...then there are nights like tonight where AJ wanders into her path and takes a nose dive! He doesn't cry he just stands up and yells "BAD DOG NO!" She usually sulks off and lays in her cage because she hurt her boys feelings LOL!

<img src=http://img17.photobucket.com/albums/v51/JTDinger/IM000909.jpg>

Oh that doesn't include the 7 cats that all came from rescue or were found or the two birds that were found (by other people) and the various rodents that are petsmart rejects.

Just what I love....an open invitation to gush about my "kids" !

I have two Boxers....both rescues.

Loki is my big "mama's boy"....he thinks he was put here to keep my feet warm while I watch tv...and I don't mind one bit!
I grew up with Boxers....have always wanted one of my own, so when I stumbled across the Florida Boxer Rescue site( http://www.flbr.org ), I didn't hesitate to send in an application..
We fell in love with Loki the second we saw him on the site..we jumped in the car as soon as we could make arrangements and drove the 5 hr roundtrip to get him.
He had been picked up as a stray, wondering the streets...no tags....no chip. no one came to claim him at Animal Services and thankfully they contacted Boxer Rescue, who promptly picked him up and settled him in a foster home. He has been with us for 2 years, and I don't know how we lived without him...

Our new rescue baby is "Lyra"....also adopted thru Florida Boxer Rescue....we thought Loki needed a little sister
She was abandoned by her previous owner when she ran away from home.....she was "too much hassle" and they didn't want to bail her out of the shelter.
Once again the angels at Boxer rescue came thru, and the rest is (very recent) history. We have only had her for 2 days and she has already wormed her way into our hearts....she is such a cutie!

and Loki just ADORES her...

There's just something about rescue dogs....they seem to love you just that much more because you gave them a second chance... :fadein:

Alrighty, The Molster you can find here: www.geocities.com/coaly_moley/ it needs to be updated...

When Hazel was PTS I wanted a border collie + girl from the SPCA and mom wanted a purebred Lab male from a breeder   Since he would be my dog, she finally caved to check the SPCA first... which is where we found, believe it or not, a male Lab + BC  (from the SPCA  )
It was love at first sight, he had the little face to die for!!

The weirdest thing was that on the way down mom told me to think of a name. I told her that for a boy, my fave name was Cole. She said that numberoligicaly (sp?) spelled "oa" would be better, so it was Coal.
When we got there, the puppy which had chosen me, which was my Molson, was named Cole :o On the pages on the cage had listed the names the people there gave them, by their markings discription, and the one I had chosen was Cole, which was later changed to... Coal

So it all turned out pretty good 8)

Jake is my 12 year old English Springer Spaniel.

I inquired about available ESS's through an online rescue site. Soon after, I had plans to visit Jake at his foster home. Jake looked miserable -- only partially covered in fur, he had warts, scabs, tumors, droopy eyes, a huge scar on his back, and a few medical 'conditions'. And he was (is) above the breed standard in height and weight, standing 25" tall and weighing 90lbs! I fell in love with him at once. At the end of my hour long visit, I went on my way to 'think it over', as suggested to me by the foster mom (apparently, he had been adopted out once before then returned; and, after many visits, nobody else wanted to take him). I had already decided he would be mine. As I walked to my car, Jake followed me off the porch and stood by my car door, waiting -- something he hadn't done for ANY other visitor. He hasn't left my side since then. He is my beloved; the kind of pet that comes along once in a lifetime. I truly believe we were meant to find eachother.

I got my pit bull Messina from a group of hitchikers...
well actually that's what i tell everybody so I don't have to say the whole story cuz its long...so I might as well tell you guys the REAL story now...

My father is a truck driver, and he goes to the states alot to drop and pick up loads...he was in California at a truck stop, and some hitchikers that travel around the country were asking people whether they wanted their dog...when they came to my dad, they asked if he was interested, because they said they couldn't keep taking her around everywhere with them..she belonged in a home..not on the road...

My whole family loves animals..and my dad didn't know what to do...so who does he call? :P Duh..me..the animal nut of the world..."Violet, should I bring her home so we can find someone who'd be interested in having her?"....we already had a dog at that time, and still do, my Chihuahua, Dudek... and he's extremely dog and people aggressive so I automatically thought no way this is gonna work...not to mention my mother would kill me if I even ASKED about getting another dog..

But..I took my chances and told my dad to bring her home and that i'd try my best to find her a home. The first person on my list was my boyfriend...he's quite an animal lover himself and at the time he didn't have any pets (now he has 2 rescued cats)...so I asked him..at the time he said he couldn't do it, because everyone in his house was working the whole day or was at school..fair enough...so the dog stayed at our house for awhile...eventually befriending my Chihuahua without much trouble :o

My mother was scared poopless of the pittie...she had never met one and knew the type of people around here that owned these dogs (they were no good..needless to say :-? )..so she didn't agree at first..but with some persuasive magic on my behalf, I managed to convince her to keep Messina :) (I didn't change her name by the way)... now..my mom is absolutely crazy about our pittie girl...as is everyone else in the family..yup..even the little guy can stand her hehehe...

After Koda my GSD got stolen and it was apparent that she wasn't coming back we went looking for another dog to adopt. We checked the Humane Society and animal control shelters arount here for a while but no dog seemed right. Again on my birthday we went back to look, and again no luck, when the shelter said they had a puppy in the back we could look at. They brought her out and as cute as she was I wasn't really looking for a puppy, especially such a hyper one but when they put her in my arms she calmed down right away and fell asleep nearly instantly. I knew I definately couldn't leave her when they told us she was due to be put down in a few days. So she came home. Her story as far as we know was that she was abandoned at around 3-4 weeks of age in the middle of december :o when she was picked up by animal control and bottle fed until she could be adopted.

Riley was adopted last October at about a year old after we found and fostered a dog until her home could be found. His last owner lived in a tiny little apartment and was almost never home. He wasn't trained, not well housetrained and was "unruly" so when his owner got tired of him he gave him up. He was in the humane society for about a month, very rare for a purebred but noone wanted to deal with his issues (seperation anxiety, marking in the house, no training at all, horrible leash manners, dominance) But he's much better now, can be left alone for 6 hours at a time, very well trained and has discovered his one true love, the tennis ball.

And don't stone me either, but Lucky our border collie/golden retriever mix is a pet shop puppy. We thought we were saving him at the time, not helping the puppymill industry. In a way I guess we did save him, I just wish we didn't put another puppy in his place.

YEAH!! i get to talk about my babies!
lol
i'll start with Zoey since i had her first..
We had a Rottie/lab mix named Alizay who my husband and i LOVED to death, she ended up having some heart and lung disease and was PTS before she even turned a year old   very hard time for us...
After that we knew that Justin wanted a rottie. he loves them so i was constantly looking on petfinder for rotties, we were actually going to adopt a deaf Rottie named Mozart, but he got adopted before we could get down there ( good for him! ) So the search when on , when i found then named "bizzy" over in Yakima ( eastern washington ) and showed her to my husband he was a little iffy, i said i think she's cute lets so see her, she is your Anniver. present. So we drove 3 hours east throgh the snow and rain to go see this little 8 week old puppy named Bizzy.. well it was love at first site, she was scared of us ,. who wouldn't be at that young age .. i picked her up and she peed' all over me. and that is when justin said "YeP *LOL* She's comming home with us" we adopted her on 15 Feb 2003.. lol should have seen the signs when she pee'd on me..
here she is when we brougth her home.. ( 8 weeks 9 pounds)

And this is her now ( 65 pounds 18 months old )

Now Cody..
We decided that we wanted 2 dogs, zoey needed a playmate and justin and i would like to have a dog each. i was looking on the internet for Golden Retreivers and found one i emailed the resuce group and they said he'd already gone home, but they were getting a 11 week old Aussie pup ( i've ALWAYS wanted an aussie, never thought of it in all my searching ) and a 2 year odl GSD. well DH wanted a big dog, he got Zoey i was looking at malamutes but they got alittle TOO big for me, so i told her i wanted to see the aussie, it was then that she told me Cody was from a BYB who was goign to be put down becuase he was deaf, and he didn't look like normal Aussies, he was mostly white called a Double Blue merle. As soon as i heard his story, and that he was deaf i said i wanted him, before i even saw his pictures, and she had already approved me justin and i know ASL so we would teach him that. I checked my email eavery 5 mins waiting to see what this guy was going to look like, and when i got them i melted. we drove up to whidbey Island ( 2 hours north and a 20 min ferry ride ) the next day saw this little guy running around he came right up to us, dropped his ball gave us kisses and then picked up the tennis ball and dropped it, like... hello you gonna throw that thing?? ( should have seent hat as a sign too.. lol now he's ball obsessed )
and i knew i wanted him!!
Here he is at 11 weeks old and 14 pounds ( this is hte picture they sent me )

and here he is now 17 months old and 46.7 pounds

Kaedyn's my second dog but first rescue. In his last home, he was allowed to walk himself around the neighborhood. He would soil in the neighbors' yards and they got fed up. They called animal control but couldn't catch him after numerous attempts. One day, he walked into someone's backyard and was cornered. The person kept him there until animal control came to pick him up. Then he was held for a seven day waiting period. I think the first time I saw him was on his 5th day. I remember the exact moment I saw him. Two friends and I were there for our first day of dog walking (as volunteers). He was the second dog I saw. He was in the second kennel to the door. He immediately stole my heart. He had this sad look on his face and looked so terrified. I wasn't really looking for a dog at the time. We were talking about it but we weren't really set on it. After I saw him, I immediately called my mom and told her about him. I brought my mom to see him on his 6th day as an impound dog. Everyone (mom, brother and sister) immediately fell in love with him. He was still terrified but he had that look in his eyes. My mom and I immediately filled out the application and waited anxiously. We met another person who was trying to adopt him. Apparently, 6 other applications were filled for him. Then on the 7th day (September 17th, 2003), I called my mom right after school to see if there was any news. She told me they called and asked "Are you still interested in the Sheltie?" and I was shocked. I kept asking "Are you serious!??! Are you kidding me!??!" After school, we took him home and introduced him to my grandma then headed home.

Then we went through problems with his dominancy. He started gaining confidence in obedience and started getting way too dominant with me and Kai. But now, he's all fine and dandy. :D

Here he is on the first day I saw him:

His first day home; he was horribly thin

Oh yeah, what a great post! :P

Ok Zebra is my 2 year old Golden/GSD mix. I first saw him at the Petsmart adoption one early Saturday morning. See the only reason my mom and I went to petsmart that morning was because we forgot to the day before and our rabbit needed some hay. So I realy wanted to look at what dogs they had there. There were 3 adult dogs and a big penned area with 5 or 6 puppies. Well of course I HAD to look at the puppies and I saw this little brindle boy in the back all by himself. One of the AC officers came over and asked me if I wanted to see any. Well I said yes that I wanted to look at the brindle dog. All the while my mom standing next to me saying "Melanie don't do it, your going to get attached and your going to want to bring him home. You know we can't take a dog home, we don't have the room and we have a rabbit.". So I promised I wouldn't get attached (HAHA!). The AC officer took him out and he sat down right next to me and acted like he didn't have a care in the world. The officer told me that they had had him for two weeks and that they picked him up off the streets of L.A. :( She told us that he was her favourite and the best behaved but she felt bad because he had been there for two weeks already and no one wanted him. :( I felt bad but I knew we couldn't adopt him. So my mom and I went inside to get what we needed for our rabbit.

When we came out of Petsmart I had to look at him one last time. I went over to his little pen and he was sitting down looking at me with is big sad eyes. I KNEW then that I had to have him. I must have argued with my mom for 15 mins before she finally gave up and said she would call my dad to ask him. My dad was NOT happy and did NOT NOT NOT want a dog. He was sure that any dog in our house would kill our rabbit  . Somehow, and I have no idea how, my mom convinced him that we were getting a dog. I signed and payed for the adoption myself (I had saved up 100 bucks for a tattoo that I was planning on getting but used it to adopt instead). So after the papers were all signed we walked right back into Petsmart and bought everything you would ever possible need for a puppy. A $5 dollar trip for rabbit hay turned into a $200+ shopping trip for a new dog.

When I got home my dad and brother were furious at me for getting a dog. My dad didn't want one and my brother was afraid of dogs. Oh well too bad for them. I had to wait a week to get him while they did his neutering. I remember exactly how the nurse brought him out holding him and handed him to me. He was bearly bigger then the full grown chihuahua that was in the vets office. He was only 12 lbs at the time. Now he is 80!!!!! :o I also remember the first thing he did when he got into my dads car was pee in it.

Woo anyways that's the story of Zebra and how I got him. Now the little bugger is as happy as can be. :P

I was not so sure about getting a dog when my hubby suggested it. We went to the local humain soceity and found a lab/pointer mix at first, but the dog was reserve by another person and eventually he adopted the dog. So we went back a few days later and saw my princess. When every other dog was barking like crazy, she glue herself to the gates and let me pet her, and I could have done that for hours. After some hesitation, we decided to take her home. She's been with us ever since, and we love & spoil her to death!

She almost poop in our new townhouse the first day coming home. We got her outside in time to do her business. I remember how she was afriad of going up the stairs the first day also.

We have her now for 4 years, and can't imagine not having her all these times. Although next time I believe I'll probably go thru dobie rescue since that are such good dogs.

I lived in apartments for a long time and always told my self I'd get a dog if I ever owned a house. So, when I bought my house, off I went to the Humane Society. I had the following ideas in mind for the kind of dog I'd get:

1) Short fur
2) Medium size
3) 2 yrs of age or under
4) Absolutely no pit bulls or anything with pit bull in it!

Well, there was Mollie in her kennel, a 4yr old Pit/Beagle mix making goo-goo eyes at me. I took her out to the area where they let you hang out with the dog. She was sooooo sweet and playful and would roll over on her back so I'd pet her tummy and she made me laugh rolling around on the grass and making funny noises.

Well, at least I stuck to the short fur, and medium size.

And as far as the "no pit bull" thing, Mollie and the dogs of one of my neighbors convinced me otherwise and less than a year later I ended up with Desmond my American Pit Bull Terrier and am now a total "Pit Bull slut"!

Here is our gorgeous little girl Kira. We adopted her in March and she was 8 months old at the time.

I had been thinking for ages that I wanted a second dog but weren't in the best position to get another puppy so thought we should look for an older fairly submissive female that would get along with Indy. Since what we were looking for was quite specific I expected to have a fairly long search, however somone was watching over us because the first day I even mentioned on another board that I was looking for another dog a lady that runs a rescue organisation got in touch with me to say that as she was reading my post she actually received a phone call from a lady wanting to find a home for an eight month old female Malamute. We fell in love with her straight away and the rest is history. I really think it was meant to be.

I got Jackie on February 9, 2002. I had moved back home to take care of my dad while he was dying of cancer. My dad had always been a huge dog lover, and they had a huge back yard. I wanted a Golden Retriever or Golden/mix dog, so I started looking through Petfinder.com. I saw Jackie's picture on there and immediately fell in love. As she had been rescued from the pound, and there was no background on her, they guessed her to be a 1-1/2 year old Golden Retriever/German Shepherd/Collie mix. Jackie is one of those once-in-a-lifetime dogs. My dad was very depressed toward the end, and Jackie made him laugh out loud just being a silly dog. My dad passed away on April 5, 2002, so he got to enjoy Jackie's company. Two months before my dad passed away, we put my mom in a nursing home with advavnced Alzheimer's (she doesn't know any of us any more). And I was recovering from a major knee injury from the end of December where I had been in a wheelchair for over a month. I was still on crutches when my dad and I went to meet Jackie. I don't know how I could have gotten through losing my mom and dad without having Jackie there.

Here's the picture of Jackie that was in Petfinder.com that made me fall in love with her. Look at that tongue!

This is what Jackie looked like when I got her. She was thin, had a bad coat, and was shy.

And here is Jackie now (still wet from playing in the pool). She'll be 4 years old around August, and she's a happy, healthy puppygirl who loves everyone!

Then in October of 2002, I decided that Jackie needed a sister. I found Maya's picture on Petfinder.com and fell in love with her. Maya was a 1-1/2 year old Golden Retriever/Husky mix who had been an owner-surrender. I took Jackie to Maya's foster home so they could meet, and they hit it off immediately. They fell asleep together on the sofa their first night together, and they've been best friends ever since. Maya is a wonderful dog, happy, goofy and affectionate. Her only two issues (which her owners couldn't handle) was that she's a fence jumper and a barker. When she and Jackie go in the back yard, I attach a 40-foot cable to Maya's harness, and the two girls can play and run and wrestle and have fun. Maya can use most of the yard, and she's happy as a clam. I work until midnight, and I don't want Maya barking that time of night, so I put a citronella bark collar on her at night, and she doesn't bark AT ALL with that on.

Here are Maya's two Petfinder.com pictures:

Rescue was the best thing that ever happened to me because it introduced me to my baby girl, Kyra. I was interested in getting a dog and I thought a mutt would be perfect. I was orginally looking at getting a husky/samoyed mix (Imagine the hair on that one!) but when I got to the rescue they had all been adopted. The owner kept asking me if I would see the "lab mixes" and finally I just said "yes" because I loooove puppies - as you all probably know my this point in our relationships.

When I went over, there were only 3 puppies left in this litter. The woman began to thrust the oldest female of the bunch at me named Sasha. I didn't take to her and I didn't like her brother Stu much either. I was about to leave when some one little and adorable started to bark like a fool. It was the cutest little puppy bark. He he! So I turned around and this is what I show (it wasn't a dog, it was an otter! :o...just joking):
