Guest Anonymous
Hey, I've been interested in maybe going into a field of work working with "Cop Dogs" or Guid Dogs, but I'm not quite sure how to go about that... I know there are a few or at least one (can't really remember) Guid Dog Serviouses (sp?) in BC... but that's to go GET the dogs right? So I'm not sure, anyone know how I could go abouts doing something like that? I know in Salmon Arm's CWCC you can learn to train dogs for police... I THINK, or else it was tracking for narcotics, I really can't remember  But I already made up my mind as to NOT go there... soo... yeah, any help would be awsome! Thanks! :D
kendalyn
There is a school called the Assistance Dog Institute. It offers an Associate of Science degree program if you want to get a degree in training and placing service dogs. Entry into the program requires 24 hours of transferable gen ed credits from another college with a grade C or better. There are requirements for what the transferrable Gen Ed classes are. The main website is http://www.assistancedog.org The link to the degree program page is: http://www.assistancedog.org/college/degree_programs.html It might be something to look into :-) I think it is in California

Black GSD
Working with Guide or Assistance dogs is MUCH safer! With Police K9s it isn't IF you get bitten, it is WHEN and HOW BAD!
courtnek
theres some at this link Shara http://www.k9trainers.com/canada_dog_training_schools.htm
Guest Anonymous
Thanks Court! :D  Yeah, Black GSD that's why I'm leaning more towards the guid dogs 8) Although I think doing tracking work for narcodics or something would be pretty cool! :D
courtnek
Not if you have to confront a seller who's been busted for a mil in drugs.... I'm not putting down your choice by any means, but Shara, could you shoot somebody? to kill? It could be required....then maybe it's different in Canada.....here, you would have to learn to use a gun, and use it if necessary. . unfortunately, there's a lot more to narcotic tracking then baggage in airports and border security.... Just make sure you know what you're getting in to.... :fadein:
Guest Mutts4Me
For Guide dogs, are you talking about being a puppy raiser? Where you have the dog for the first 1-2 years of its life and socialize it and give it basic training? I can't imagine doing that, lol. I admire the people who can, just like I admire people who foster dogs, but I can't see myself having a dog for months or a year and then giving it up. My friend still keeps in contact with her Guide Dog's puppy raisers, sending them pictures and stuff :)
Lokipups
If you are interested on a career working with guide dogs, I know the Mira Foundation is in Quebec and New Brunswick. http://www.mira.ca/contenta/ap1a.html I don't know how their program works, but I can tell you the Seeing Eye here in NJ requires a three year apprenticeship to become a full time trainer, but they are always looking for tech support. Best of luck to you!
Guest Anonymous
I duno guys... they were just things I thought would be interesting to do, to work with dogs and make a difference so to speak, and thought I'd look into it more and stuff which is why I asked on here. Not saying I've decided 100% that's what I'm going to do
zheelah
Have you thought about SAR???
Guest Anonymous
Yeah I have... but for some reason SAR doesn't really appeal to me... At first I just wanted to train, like obediance (not competitive) or whatever, then I was thinking of working with Aggressive dogs, or any other behavior problem, which I'd still love to do, but that's my long term goal... Right now I guess I should figure out what I wana do  But basiclly I wana do just about EVERYTHING with dogs! :D Just not sure where to start! The guid dog thing sounds much more appealing to me... but I think Mutts is right, I think it'd be pretty hard to work with a dog for that long and then let it go :( I'd like to move to Alberta... maybe to Taber, not really sure yet though. Not sure where I'm going to go at all!! I'd rather NOT move to the other side of Canada (I have more family on this side, and the ones that are on that side of Canada are people I've never even met)... hmmm... I looked for K9 things in Lethrbidge, it's very close to Taber, and they have a K9 Unit, but I think I've decided NOT to go that rout  ARrrg... Well thanks guys! I think I need to think about things a bit more
