mommacat
I have a friend with a almost 3 year old black lab male. Every fall, after the first couple of times he has been out hunting, he starts pooping blood. The vet says it is coccydiosus (spelling??) and gives him some antibiotics. It seems to be getting worse each year - does anyone have any idea why this happens or what he could do to help prevent it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. When the vet told my friend that some dogs have to be put down for this, it really upset him. Thanks in advance for any help.
Aroura
Ah, I thought the name rang a bell but wasn't sure so I did a search on it. Here's a link to a page: http://www.cm-d.com/buckeye/tech_manual/8_27.html
mommacat
Thanks, Aurora!! You are a sweetie! I will give him the info - we were worried that the other dogs that hunt with him (mainly ours!) could get it to, now we know how to prevent that. imported_Kat
Coccidiosis is an infection caused by a parasite that uses birds as its host. It is extremely prevalent at this time of year when birds are starting to increase their movements by migrating and the pathology of the infection usually causes colitis, which is where the blood is coming from that your friend sees. Antibiotics like Oxytetracycline or Ampicillin with Sulphasalazine to coat the bowel are all effective treatments. In older dogs it isn't as serious as it is with puppies, but the dogs contract the infection by licking the bird droppings containing the parasite off their feet. Suggest to your friend that he/she could wash the dogs feet after they are finished hunting, as this will minimise chances of infection.
