Guest Anonymous
Does anyone here have any knowledge of entropion? That's the turning in of the eyelids. With Bentley both of his lower lids turn in. I've already been told by my vet that he'll have to have surgery to correct the problem. I was wondering in anyone has knowledge of what the surgery entails, recovery time, etc. Any info would be helpful. I'm still looking for a specialist in my area because my vet doesn't do very many of these surgeries and I want to make sure he's well taken care of. Thanks! Guest Anonymous
The left eye is much worse than the right one. The left eye seems to cause him much irritation. He is always pawing at it or rubbing it against something to relieve the pain (I guess). My vet said that it could probably wait until we nuetered (sp?) him. That it could all be done at the same time. I'm still looking for a specialist for a second opinion. I just don't want it to affect his vision. I know that if left alone too long and if the condition is serious enough it could possibly lead to blindness. Goodness knows that I don't what that to happen. Thanks for all the information! Guest Anonymous
Recovery should be about 2 weeks. You can take his eyelid and wipe the lash down and out of his eye. This will give him some comfort. The result of entropion is the eyelashes scratch the eyeball causing corneal ulceration and possible perforation of the cornea. But surgery is usually not done while a dog is too young (before skull and eye growth is complete)(around 6 months). Majority of the time this is a genetic condition(congenital). sheesh
I was just going to start a post addressing this issue and there it was! My vet says my saint mix (1 1/2 yo) has entropion of right eye. I called the rescue organization from which I got him from (I just adopted him 3 weeks ago) and she said yes, he had mild entropion, but she discouraged surgery at this stage because it was not bothering him and it would be cosmetic only (at this mild stage). If it got to be where he was bothered and there was discharge and other symptoms, then the surgery is needed. I can see now, where his little lashes are on the inside and understand how irritating that could be. But i'm just going to wait till I notice symptoms of him being bothered, till getting the surgery. On the downside, she says the recovery process is a pain in the (#@* because he will need to wear an E-collar for 10 days or so as well as lots of eye medicines and ice packs to deal with the significant swelling. And if he pulls the stitches out - he'll have to have it redone. Ouch! Dealing with a 120lb dog with an e-collar is not something I look forward to, so I think I will just wait for a bit, maybe till winter. Does anyone have any stories of their dogs post-surgery and the recovery process? Thank you

RescuerAndVetTech
We do a bit of these surgeries at work. Lately we've done 3 cases. 2 adult English Bulldogs, and one young pug. All recoved wonderfully, and have had great results. The procedure doesn't take too too long, but that depends on many things. Usually within 2 weeks the sutures are dissolved. Another one of these surgeries is on the schedule for tomorrow also.
