:( story but dogs should not be left on there own with children or (should the child be left on his own).. no matter what the breed, even if the dogs are seperated from the child....there are ways a child can open doors and dogs can be provoked to such an attack, which in this case was a very :( one. There are so many cases like that where children awomen and even men are mauled, bitten and killed by untrained and unsocialized dogs. Its sad and horrible but more than anything it makes me mad. because it gives the media what they want sensational news and then it puts thoughts in the mind of the public becomes a case to back BSL. It is just all around bad. the dogs suffer both the one involved and everyone that looks anything like it. Shelters design mandatory euthanization based on breed or appearance. And to think it could be avoided by just letting people pet your puppy, teach your dog not to jump up, teach them to sit when they want attention, teach them not to mouth hands or feet. Because i am willing to bet that is how that incident happened. the dogs were excited to see the kid and wanted to play. one mouthed the kid and the kid may have screamed or ran and that triggered the dogs into a pack mentality. something that anyperson could have stopped. now the little boy and all three dogs are dead because of irresponsibility.

Rott'n'Pitt.

I also believe that is what could have happened. A scream from a child is like a squieky toy which is very high pitched to a dogs ears that can send them mad.
My Border Collie mix goes crazy at the noise and won't stop barking untill it stops, this barking isn't because she hates the noise....quite the opposite she loves it...but whether some dogs do or don't, they will see that noisy thing has there victim or plaything!

I Agree That For Something like this to happen, it must be the owner's fault...But since this incident that Snoop-Dog is talking about IS MY COUSIN, I have to say that my mind may be changed.....At One Minute, the dog was Happy, Next.... :-? :x :o

My Cousin May need plastic Surgery :-? But I guesss you can't blame the dog but it's still extremely upsetting...I am more mad at the Owner.....He was watching this happen and he was right there...And it was entirely the owner's fault...becuz She was doing him a favour cuz he asked her and a friend to come over and bring some doggy food cuz he didn't have enough money to buy some. SO That;s what you get for doing a favour??

I've heard (but don't have much knowledge on it) that they're thinking about stopping to breed Rotties...Anyone know much aboutthis? How Do You Feel? Should they? Or No Way?

EXACTLY!!! Attacking dogs dont bark, they might growl but they ont bark. in the article it says that dog barking is what drew them outside, dogs bark and bounce around when they are playing and a small child is much too ofragile to stand up to the roughhousing of three full grown rotties. I highly doubt that the dogs which are normally house dogs would have attacked the child in a menacing way but when the kid got going it excited them and the outcome was almost inevitable. more than likely the child was running from the dogs and ran to the backyard and was downed instead of being dragged like the article says. There are so many times when the media will reword a story leavinf out facts or adding in thier own opinion to swing the readers.

No way should they stop breeding Rotties. BAD breeding should be stopped or made illegal or something (don't know how this could be implemented though? licences??), people should not buy dogs on a whim but do their research properly and know exactly what they're getting themselves into and not get something totally unsuitable for their lifestyle. They should also know how to look after a dog- exercise, socialisation, obedience etc. so the dog has a chance to be well-adjusted and happy.
I would trust my big boofhead BK not to bite me more than I would trust my grandpa's little dachshund, because BK is well-socialised, not spoiled rotten, obedient (mostly  ), and because he HAS to be- otherwise a dog like him would be PTS first time he bit someone. A dachshund growling at or biting someone is not seen as terribly scary by most people- a blue heeler or similar "nasty" dog is.
Punish the deed, not the breed.

The media did not take this out of context...I really wish I could find the article in the local paper about this accident. The owner of the Rottweilers changed his story a few times. The child's jugular was ripped out of his throat....the child was really scared of these dogs also...in our local paper the attack was blamed on the fact there was a bitch in season in the house and the child was attacked/mauled/torn apart by the 3 male Rottweilers.

I'm beginning to think more and more that Snoop-Dogg is a troll... just here to shake up the place (note that their only two posts deal with both killing cats and killing humans). He/she is more than welcome to prove me otherwise, and I hope that they do ... I've just spent too much time on Usenet.

BOY !! This is the kind of post that gets everybody in an uproar.....
#1- I do not think that Rottweilers are the Devils Dog, and they should not outlaw producing the breed.
#2- You can't say there are'nt dogs out there that aren't bred right and may have problems in the brain. But you also can't blame a whole breed for a bunch of bad ones. That's like saying all white people are bad or all black people are bad. There's always going to be bad apples in every group.
#3- There is definitely a stereotype about guard type dogs being vicious, for this express reason I don't tell everyone that my Rott/Lab is part Rott, I just refer to her as a Lab mix .
#4- I do daycare in my home, and my dogs are raised in an enviroment with many children around of all ages. It is part of my duty to make sure these kids in my care, learn to respect and treat the dogs nicely. It is also my duty to make sure that I never leave any child alone with my dogs.
I don't think they would bite, but they are dogs and you never know what may set them off. I have 2 Jacks and Rott/Lab. As well as I don't let them manhandle my cat. He can cause damage with his teeth as well.
#5- Yes all dogs can bite, but there is a difference in the size of a Terrier bite from a Rott or a Pit bite. And I think this is why it makes the news.
You never see news coverage - Chihuahua bites boy, or Shih tzu mauls woman.
The eyes are definitely on the Rottweilers and the Bully breeds right now and responsible owners will take heed and train and treat their dogs right.
Whereas the idiots and irresponsible pet owners will continue to get into trouble with their dogs, and rightfully so. And yes in the end it is the owner not the dog. But who pays..... :(

by the post i meant that dogs bark when they are restrained or when they cant get to another dog or what it is that they want. Have you ever been unfortunated enough to see a dog fight? The dogs are actually pretty quiet when they size each other up and then once they go at each other and are pulled apart, then they start to bark. There might be a growl or scream during the tussle but not barking. when dogs are actually fighting or biting something there is no barking going on. But when dogs are playing (and some play pretty rough) they bark and yip and growl. Its in the nature of the dog though i am sure that there are exceptions to the rule, I just havent met any yet. I read in the link that the owner heard the barking and that was what drew him outside. From what i read in that article it didnt sound like an attack to me Just dog play that went wrong(although i have since been informed of additional information from other articles that put that theory to rest.)
Happy to explain myself, and thank you for asking clarification.

My 2 cents: I helped a friend pick out 3 pups from a BYB, before i knew better. the sire couldn't be registered due to him being an unapproved breeding stub, the original breeder would not give over his papers due to not being fixed. the brood bitch was a high strung, OVER protective papered female. My friend bought 3. Gordon, went to his mom, ws an inside dog or correctly the youngest child of 4. he is the hugest angel in vermont. Molsten started outinside but started showing sever human aggression which got worse when he was placed outside fulltime. He was PTS before his 2nd birthday. Mya, all you could ask for in a perfect german type rottie, but was incourged to be human aggressive. she made herself alpha of the pack and had to be rehomed due to this. My point is Genetics plays a big part in personalities and second is upbringing. The original brood bitch should never have been bred no matter how many CH are in her pedigree.

Yep, I agree 100% and that's basically what my post waaaay back on the first page said. Sorry folks, there are bad dogs. Dogs with bad or unstable temperaments should never be bred but, unfortunately, sometimes they are.

Rott is basically correct. Dogs that have squared off and intend to fight dont bark. Barking in a wolf/dog society indicates warning....if they dont agree and they are seperated, they will bark. If they are not seperated and they have decided to fight, they will snarl, which is different from a growl...the growl comes from low in the throat and is meant as a warning - leave me alone or I will attack/defend. The snarl appears with all teeth showing, lips back, nape hair raised high, and it means I AM GOING TO ATTACK. If the other dog doesnt back down, a fight will start.

This is true of any dog, big small or otherwise. I have heard that often the bully breeds give no warning, but that is a breed characteristic.
Most dogs warn first, and try to avoid the conflict.

That story was very sad - those children were considered of lesser rank
than the dog, which puppies are in a normal wolf/dog society. It's up to the owners to make sure that the dogs know their place, which in this
case is lower ranking than the children. In a pack, the puppies would not
ever challenge the leader. In a human household, the children dont understand pack rules. NEVER LEAVE A CHILD ALONE WITH A DOG!!!

Childern, especailly young ones, dont understand that the dog is a dangerous creature under certain circumstances. That story upset me, because it was framed as "big bad rottie attacks child", but the same thing happened around here with a Golden, who attacked a childs face and permanently disfigured him, and the news said "HOW SHOCKING! beautiful family dog attacks child...." I hate the media....

Well, I have to admit that I was "attacked" by a Rottweiler puppy yesterday at the mall. As much as I know I shouldn't, I can't keep myself from stopping into the pet store, and they now have this adorable Rotti puppy in one of the cages on the floor. So I go in, start rubbing his head, he wakes up. Up pops his head, and his mouth heads right towards my fingers, and out comes this cute pink tongue. Wouldn't stop licking my hand, and when I pulled away after about a minute (I had an appt I had to start heading towards), he started growling, then whining pitifully, trying to squeeze his big head through the bars to get to my hand. I indulged him for about five minutes, then he sighed and fell asleep.

Total love bug, and if he goes to a good home with owners who understand the responsibility of owning the breed, I imagine with good training he'd make a great ambassador for the breed.

So many of the pet store puppies automatically nip, it was a very pleasant surprise to find one who just wanted to lick ;)

OMG Poor little mite.....Im not suprised he growled and whined, wouldn't anybody being locked in a cage 24 hours a day!
That is so cruel (Pet Shops should be banned from selling pets)
this is one of the reasons why so many dogs become aggressive, the way they are treated from the start!
For any animal, being kept in a cage is no life for a puppy as well has an adult dog. I pitty this puppy and others when and if they find homes...what life they will be leading.

These back yard breeders should be shot
No knowledgable breeder in there right mind would allow there puppies to be sold from Pet Shops....its bloody discusting :x
