Daisysmom
Last night, Daisy was out in the yard and a little too quiet. Chelsea kept looking to go out with her, but I wanted to give Dais a little peace. So, I finally got up (you know, I was watching American Idol!!) and she had a baby bunny in her mouth :o I yelled at her to drop it and she just ran. I called my hubby, Joe and he ran out to try and get her to drop it. Well, she took off with it in her mouth and just ran away from him!!! She went behind this big gazebo we have in our yard (under where the bunnies live) and when she came back around, she was licking her lips :o :o :o The poor little thing. It was so young and small :( I feel so bad!!! I guess it is the way of nature.... the circle of life, but a poor little bunny :( Can't wait to see what that looks like when she poops that out :o
behle
:o Daisy - YARD HUNTRESS! :o I would have freaked out too, but you are right about the "circle of life" thing. I read somewhere about the average life expectancy of a rabbit - can't remember the exact days - but it was pretty short! Do you think Daisy is now going to lurk around the gazebo for "seconds"?
ellieangel
Daisysmom Well it won't look much like a bunny that's for sure !!! :-? Yep circle of life-out of our hands !!!
Marble
at least she took care of it all the way, my old lab once found a really cute baby possum and seriously injured it and i was so upset my dad had to take care of it, it was horrible, it was having spasms and convulsions and it was just ghastly. whodoesthat
When I was 11 or so, our family had this black lab. Once I was out in the yard with her, and she was poking around in some wood. I heard this terrible squeaking, so I went to check it out. She had found a nest of baby bunnies ... AND SHE WAS LICKING THEM! She seemed so pleased with herself to have found these little baby animals to kiss on. :o She always did love babies - at one time we had some ducklings that would follow her around.
jen
daisysmom- poor bunny  , but like you said "circle of life", at least she didn`t let it suffer, that would have been even worse :o whodoesthat- that`s sooooooo cute. I have a dog that`s like that, he`s my jackrussel terrier, we have pet rabbits and he washes them and lays down with them  I think he`s a bit confused, i think he thinks he`s their mum  , bless him :D
huskys4life
Yeah, Tasha snatched a bird out of the air when I first got her and she tried to swollow it whole when I tried to get it away from her. I grabbed her mouth and my hubby had to pull it out. it was dead. I think it had a heart attack because it wasn't bleeding anywhere. (I think I would have had a heart attack too!) I was crying I was so upset. :(
Nancy B
Don't you just hate it when that happens! Yeah, my male snacks on chipmonks when he can catch them. Keep an eye on her, she may need to be wormed. Eating wild animals really isn't a great idea simply because of the parasites and/or diseases that may be present. courtnek
yea, it is circle of life, but you might want to evict the rabbits (sometimes animal control will come get them) It is true that once they taste blood, they will continue to "hunt"....natural instincts are coming to the fore, but as was mentioned they dont have all the natural defenses that wild animals have against virus', worms, etc.... Alex's favorite target was squirrels....
Beautiful Border Collie
My border collie once got ahold of a toad! Boy was he foaming at the mouth! (my dog not the toad) Wonder if he got a buzz out of it
athenix
Ick. Ick. Ick. I think that the worst Maggie ever ate were a few bugs here and there, but then, that's understandable (although, I suppose, even that is questionable!). My parents trap mice in their house: the practice started out of the fear that Maggie would one day have a nice "midnight snack" - it's actually quite cute... my father takes them out to Titusville's claim to fame (Drake Well: first oil well) and lets them go... There were a few tense moments when I had gerbils: we would let them run loose in the bathroom (accompanied and entirely blocked off/gerbil-proofed, of course!), but they were jumpers and sometimes one would jump over the cardboard we used to "close the door" (easy in/out for humans). No harm ever came to them (they were caught quickly), but once we got Maggie, the first thing when that happened was that the gerbil watcher called out to ensure that Maggie came nowhere near :)
bk_blue
BK used to catch rats, I think they are native rats as opposed to the domestic ones that live in your house- these rats run along the shrub-covered fence at nights and he used to go insane barking at them. He bailed up a possum one night, and he's caught a few birds, but he's too lazy now to chase them. :) BBC lucky your dog didn't catch a cane toad- I think they are poisonous and here in Aust they are classified as pests, they only live up north though, too cold where I live for them thankfully. :o
luckychaos
First time we went to the cottage with Lucky, The first thing he did was to catch and kill (have no clue how he did it) a frog and a fish. He ate them both then threw them up in the house later.
StarFox
Zebra hasn't eaten anything live. the only thing he eats is cat poo :o . But he does try and catch birds when they land on our lawn but he's not a very good bird dog and dosn't sneak up to them he runs and tries to jump on them.. :) Zebra would never hert any small animal..at least I hope not. we have a rabbit and we socalized them when zebra was only a few months old, so they don't mind eachother to much. Daisysmom
I hear ya!! Not only does Daisy eat the bunny, but the poo too!! Yep, their all the same :o I have caught Chelsea eating Daisy's poo here and there and the rabbit poo too and they both eat chicken once a day, so no one can say that they aren't getting the proper nutrients! I feed them raw chicken and fresh veggies in the morning and for dinner they get dry dog food with natural yogurt. They really eat better than we do, but still want the poo :o
