Copying texts from books to internet?

Hi!
Little question crazy me is back with a question of books this time.
Is it ok to put a piece of a text from a book to the internet (to f.ex. your homepage) if you make it practicly impossible to copy the text and allso name the author and the book from wich that particular piece of text is from?
I've been tryeing to find info of Legg-Calve-Perthes and Pathella Luxation to put on my homepage, but I can't find it anywhere. I have a finnish book that has a little (very, very, VERY good) chapter about them. (not a long text)
Do you think I could use it on my homepage? I've sent an e-mail to the publisher of the book a couple months ago, but I haven't got any kind of an anwser, so... I'm turning to you guys.

It is usually not a good idea but if you do just make sure you follow all of the appropriate citation rules.

Here is a good page on Legg-Perthes :

Here is one on Luxating Patella:

Good luck.

It's the citation rules I'm interested in. I'm not planning on copying the entire book! I'm not that mad!
Just about the common health issues with Chinese Cresteds (not a Chinese Crested book) f.ex. Luxating Patella and Legg-Perthes.

Thanks for thoose links. I'll copy the texts and pics just to be on the safe side. If someone takes thoose pages off the net somethimes then I will still have the text and the pics left. (will put the source page visible though)

Thanks Marysmomma! :)

Poofy: I'll make the page in PDF format wich makes it practicly impossible to copy it unless you have a programme that you can make PDF files with. I will have the author and the year the book was published and allso have a warning text with the "Do not copy..." thingy. :) How does that sound?

yeah, on my website I rewrote some stuff on aggression from a book but put it in my own words, but I also gave credit to the book, listing the authors and title, just to be on the safe side.

You'll want to check this, but I believe if you list the title, author and publishing company beforehand; ex: <TITLE> <AUTHOR> <PUBLISHER>
(Like Simon and Schuster or whatever) and the date of publication, you can then put it in there word for word, IN QUOTES. As long as the quotation marks are there, it is considered a quote and not plagerism.

:D

Courtnek: I haven't put it on the net yet, but I made it ready now. I put the quotations and I have mentioned the source (Author and Title of the book), publisher, when it first was published and when it was reprinted. :)

How is it with pictures then? Can you put pictures in texts from books the same way?
Question I was looking for training tips on herding on the web for our clubs newsletter is it still the same deal??
Personally, Shady -- if it said do not reproduce, copy, etc...without prior permission > I'd ask before I copied anything. I have seen instances where the author gives permission as long as he/she is acknowledged as the author.

Agh, Perthes Disease.... I've got that.
As for how to reference, title, date, author, publisher, place of publication and also page number of the book if its only a few pages or whatever.
I've got a link for you, its a university link but it'll probably answer all of your questions: http://www.une.edu.au/offsect/plagiarism_avoidance.htm
good luck
