Lord_Pik
Tyr seems to be drinking more than is dogly possible. He can drink two bowls of water in one sitting (and he does) multiple times a day. He drinks more than five times the amount the other dogs do. Could this be diabetes or some other health problem? Or do some dogs just consider water more important than breathing? Lord_Pik
Luckily we live in a townhouse with gas heat, and two heat obsessed tenants on either side of us, so we rarely have the furnace on. Also saves lots of cash on the bill :)
Luka-pop
Does his food contain more sodium than he can handle?
Lord_Pik
I can't find a sodium amount listed on our dog food.. :hmmmm: we feed them MMillenia Solid Gold..
DogPaddle
No sodium (or salt) listed, here are the first few ingredients: Beef Meal, Ground Barley, Ground Brown Rice, Menhaden Fish Meal, Flax Seed Oil, Salmon Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Garlic, Parsley, Thyme, Seaweed Meal, Cranberries, Sweet Potatoes, Apples, Carrots I have made ingedients that may have higher sodium contents in them. Luka-pop
I'm sure they don't actually put sodium into the foods, but are there a lot of ingredients that are salty? Is your dog easily excitable, as if he exercised a over nothing?
Luka-pop
I was thinking if your dog breed comes from somewhere that's cold, and maybe you live somewhere that's hot? But Canada's not hot!
Lord_Pik
The red and orange items in the ingredients list posted by DP are the high sodium content items. Tyr is laid back and doesn't get excited unless you work him up to it.
Luka-pop
So you think that could be it? Those specific ingredients?
Guest roo
How old is the dog now? Is he peeing alot too? first signs of sugar diabetes. FREQUENT URINATION DRINKING LOTS OF WATER LARGE APPETITE UNEXPLAINED WEIGHT LOSS There are two different types of diabetes in dogs. I reccomend a check up at the vets taking a urine sample with you. DogPaddle
He drinks, he pees, he drinks, he pees . . . No weight loss though, fairly healthy as well. But who wants to take a chance, so on next vet visit its: snip, hips check and drinking problem discussion.

DogPaddle
Probably be fine - I find pet owners (me included) worry about every little thing but mostly dogs are fine. No harm in checking though.
Lord_Pik
Luckily I haven't noticed him limping lately. :)
Malamum
I know I worry about every little thing too. When we first bought Indy home we thought we had got a baby camel instead of a puppy :o however as he has gotten older he doesn't seem to drink as much in one go. Guest Anonymous
It depends on how old your pup is, see my shih-tzu, Candy has been drinking about 4 cups of water in two hours, and she was recently diagnosed with Cushings disease. But that mainly only affects older dogs, so i don't know how old your dog is.
DogPaddle
doc - I am sorry to hear about Candy, what is Cushings? Oh and Tyr is 8-9months we think.
RescuerAndVetTech
If your dog is overly active or in a warm climate, then possibly it could be normal. However, excessive drinking, or drinking more than normal, is one of the main warning signs of diabetes. I wouldn't suggest anything less than at least getting him tested. Bring a urine sample to your vet and have them check it, and go from there. In the least, at least you can rule out diabetes for now. If the problem persists and diabetes has been ruled out, it's a amart idea to get bloodowrk done to see if there is aynthing else internally that could be causing the problem. Good luck. SheltieGal
I don't know how to help, but when my dog was on Prednizone(spelling?) he drank LOTS of water.
