For those of you who have owned or own these different breeds, could you tell me if there's any truth to rotties and akitas not being good with kids, other dogs, or other pets?
Rottweilers can be wonderful with children. Socialization is the key. My 3 adore children. Check out some pictures at www.rckrotts.com/rottsnkids.html. Obedience training is a must though. Rottweilers tend to be a bit overzealous in their desire to give affection to children, so one should be able to have verbal control over them to let them know when to back off or be able to put them in a down stay so the kid can get a break. Another important factor is adult supervision. No dog, regardless of breed, should be left alone with a small child. Children aren't able to pick up on dog body language, and that is when accidents happen.

Rottweilers do have a tendency to dog aggression. Again early socialization is essential for avoiding this problem. Group obedience classes are great for this, plus it's a double edged sword. One gets obedience training and socialization around other dogs of various sizes, breeds, and sexes all wrapped up in one tidy package. :)
