Guest Anonymous Posted June 7, 2002 Share Posted June 7, 2002 GSD's are a great breed but it depends what you want them for and how you are going to socialise them. A GSD would not be a good breed if you are concerned about money because they will cost you a whold lot more than that per year to look after. Vet prices are atronomical and a GSD eats loads of food. They are intelligent so can't be left alone for long, they need loads of toys and at leat 1hr and 1/2 walking a day. Then there is the training and socialising. You have to take your dog to lessons this costs a lot of money every week but if you dont do it you will end up with an aggressive dog who you won't be able to control. They shed and are large, they can be wary of strangers and can destroy your house or yard in minutes, they are large yet agile and can jump out of most gardens so you would need a 6ft fence which costs a fortune and if the dog is male then higher otherwise everytime a female is on heat he will be out of the yard before you know it. If you dont want this then you have to pay for them to be spayed. A bitch must also be spayed cos if she gets pregnant it will cost you a fortune to pay for the upkeep of all the puppys. If you are concerned about money then they are not the breed for you. If you are willing to do all the forementioned then if you have bought it froma reputable breeder then you should have a lovely dog. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Vet care and training and food will far out weigh the price of the GDS itself. GDS are likely to have the same problems as most large breeds do..hip and elbow dysplasia,bloat, and etc.. They are natural defenders and unless socialized aloof with strangers. They do get big and like stated above they SHED ALOT. But they are a magnificent breed and amazing to watch perform what they are trained such at SCHz. or agility or herding or etc.. Guest Anonymous Posted June 7, 2002 Share Posted June 7, 2002 They are also 1st or 2nd [Im not sure which] most likely to bite although I must say, I had a sheppard/husky mix that was the best dog I ever had. Are they saying what type of temperment the parents carry? I know where I am from most people for that price will give those things and parents have all health clearances. Some even carry titles!! GSDmom Posted June 9, 2002 Share Posted June 9, 2002 GSD is my breed of choice also! That sounds like a good price for a pup. Make sure that you are getting a pup that is outgoing. Also ask the breeder if the parents or grandparents have any titles such as obedience, tracking, herding, sch or some feild they work in such as SAR, or a CGC. If the parents have these titles, the breeder has a better idea of temperment and nerves and you are more likely to get a pup with solid nerves and temperment. Another thing to make sure of is ofa certifications and other health guarantees in your contract. Yes, they do need a job to do. They are not couch potatoes. Without proper exercise, they can be destructive. Any pup needs proper socialization, but if you have a pup that is a fearful dog that is genetic and socialization will help immensly but it will not fix genetics. That's why you have to do your research. Tell the breeder exactly what you want in your dog and if you have any plans for work or sport. Maybe it would be ok and maybe not. I think hip surgery for example is running as much as $2000 per hip for dogs with displasia. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

GSDmom Posted June 22, 2002 Share Posted June 22, 2002 They lots of times do run in the 2 or 3 thousand dollar range, but if you look hard enough you can find breeders out there who have great dogs but they are just starting out and their name may not be out there yet so they can not charge the big bucks.
