Very controversial issue and very complicated! When the AKC recognized Akitas they also allowed for some mixing of breeds (check out Akita History at [url]http://www.akitaclub.org[/url]), which has made the American Akita a little thicker. Also, I just read that in Japan a white mask is preferred over a black mask, as we prefer. There are those that wish to keep the breeds seperated and those that think there should be one breed. I can't remember, nor can I find, the website that I read a few months ago that got into this issue - I do remember that it was VERY complicated.
