Guest Anonymous
My JRT has recently been diagnosed with colitis. My vet has recommended that he has a 100% natural diet and that he has a course of steroid tablets called prednisolone. Does anyone else have a dog suffering from colitis? If so, what do you feed them and has it improved the condition? Any advice you can offer would be greatly welcomed. Guest Anonymous
colitis just means that there is inflammation in the colon...it does not tell you why...vet may be trying to save you some $$ by handing out the pred to help the inflammation, but 'personally would want some more diagnostics to determine the actual cause, and treat that, rather than the symptoms...there are alot of "all-natural" products for canines and humans, but "natural" can include items from which neither would benefit...get something more specific from vet.............miami347
Guest Anonymous
We have a rough collie with colitis. Colitis can have a variety of causes, i.e. bacterial, viral, food intolerance or food allergy, or something else. We believe it is quite difficult to determine its origin and we agree with the poster who suggests further tests to reach an accurate diagnosis. There are now many specific scientific tests that can be performed with relative ease - it would be worth further investigation. Our rough - Amber did not have to go through all of this because she displayed other signs and symptoms which meant the diagnosis was conclusive - she has food intolerance or allergy - we are not quite sure which one, but the remedy is the same for both. Simplified, restricted diet. Amber has gone through many foods and she is not good on so many that the only safe way for Amber is James Wellbeloved Turkey and Rice (complete dried food) with a sprinkling of freshly cooked grade A chicken, topped with a handful of white rice. She is perfect on this diet. We cannot recommend the James Wellbeloved highly enough - if the conclusion with your pet is dietry management - which well it might be.
