1. I'm just wondering what is the most standard adoption fee?

I was looking at dogs downstate, and some shelter is charging 300$ for a pug/terrier mix.

In this town as far as I know the adoption fee is at most 75$, that I can remember.

  2. Yooper Mom. That's cute. I'm from the U.P too.

I didn't have time to read this all though.

I'd suggest a lab mix from the shelter. Of the toy breeds, a cavalier king charles spaniel, is my favorite. I hope to someday adopt one.

  3. I plan on talking with the housing commision. I'm not sure about Animal Control there, but I will call. I don't care if he has a baby on the way or not, and this is his mean's of extra cash. I'm almost positive they will do something about it if the dogs are allowed on the property, with the problems with dogs they have been having lately.

I won't go near his labs. At least the female. The female has always been really mean from what I've been told. People in his family are even afraid of her. So not only that- but he bred a dog with a bad temperment.

  4. I only used the term, because he plans on doing this again, and his brother plans on getting one of their puppies and breed it with his Chocolate lab. It's sick. I'm pretty sure that his male dog and his brothers came from the same litters.

I wish there was laws outlining this kind of stupidity.

And no, his bitch isn't a champion but his male dog is.

  5. Thanks AllAmericanPup, if you don't mind I'll C & P what you said.

She sure looks like a sweety, Sabine. I'll let you know what she ends up getting.

I wish I knew what Smokie was crossed with but seing as he was a stray, we'll never know. .lol

  6. Well Actually the same as I talked about last time.

My cousins bitch had her puppies 8 of them, full bred chocolate labs, and she is doing well.
Aparently, he doesn't think it's dangerous breeding her that young.

He has no idea what he's doing, and last I heard plans on selling the pups for 200-300$ each.

Ewww. I wish they had laws regarding it. I'm going to write the housing authority where he lives, and suggest dogs be spayed/neutured. Trust me, nobody has a legit practice in breeding animals there... It's just a small indian reservation.

Edited to add, his dog is 1 1/2 if that.

  7. Wow, I did not know that.

Luckily my mom buys a big breast (that doesn't sound right), and it's skinless. Smoke didn't have too much of it though.

Turkey is suppose to be real easy to digest for animals though (not the skin), isn't it? Or is that just for big cats.. oh nevermind, I think that's ground turkey.

  8. My friend is looking for a dog for her family.

She recently just moved to a place where she can have dogs. Her step daughter has a dog that visits often so it has to be a friendly type dog.

I think she plans on adopting from a shelter, but is researching a dominant breed. Her kids are aged, 3 and 6. She doesn't want a toy breed (I recommended a cavalier king charles spaniel) or a pitbull mix. The dog that comes over now is that.

She wants something not to large, because her daughter, but also not to small because her daughter may be a bit rough at times. She's looking for a breed that's good with children and animals.
Also, keep in mind, she lives in Michigan, so she needs a dog tolerant of cold weather.

    Any ideas?

  9. Nope, I've never attempted smilies but I should sometime. I've seen some pretty cute ones around.

I mainly make dolls too. Heres some of mine.

  10. You always have a way of putting things Alan.

I don't support banning. I support restrictions though- for all large breeds. Yes even labradors. Just that neighborhood areas should be required to keep proper care of their animals - -appropriate size leashes -- I guess I more support legal actions and fines.

Off topic, if somebody could answer .. via pm so I don't hijack the thread- I'd really appreciate it.
I want to know something about pitbulls. I was on the akc website earlier and I didn't see that breed on there. Did I just miss it or can someone tell me why they arent on there?

  11. I don't know if anyone here knows this, but I'm a pixel artist. A friend of mine was selling pixel art to benefit the england version of the ASPCA (RSPCA) I think.

Isn't it cute, I adore it. This is her site

I hope that it's ok to post stuff like this.

  12. I have no idea about the Genes thing, I think it's personally really stupid. It's like seeing 'labradoodles' promoted to me.

Although my friend Did have a beagle/pug mix she got from a shelter, and it didnt really look like Jakes. So it's weird. I hope the puggle howls.. lol !

I still think Jakes hot, though. I know bad me :( lol.

  13. You're pretty brave. I'd never walk up to a wild animal. I think I'd be more trustworthly of an elephant then a wolf, but hey that's me.

I personally don't think anyone should own wolves as a pet. Especially in a neighborhood area. That's just me.-- Last year they ate 2 dogs around my parents area. One was a St Benard on his owners porch. I think it was probably wildanimals people let lose though.

My lab is afraid of everything in the house - - but outside he's fearless. lol. Yeah I think they do still origionally have the pack behaivor. Back home. My dad is the alpha and my dog praises him... Very much like a pack behaivor. Smoke really only likes me, my mom, dad and brother.

And he's right about the wolves. Dogs are basically just domesicated wolves, in my opinion anyways. Because they produce fertile offspring and share over 98% of the same DNA. I assume wolves are a little different because of their wild nature. I'd love to study it more though.

  14. It's probably because Jake Gyllenhal is the 'IT' guy in Hollywood right now, and has one. He was on Ellen yesterday showing off pictures.

She asked why they mix the breeds. He said to take away the pugs breathing problems and the beagles howl.

But she also said I think that he rescued it. But she also said that it was the most popular dog - - - I'm sure that just added to the popularity.

  15.
there are lots of things you can do to desensitize your dog to thunder or loud noises. buy a thunder sounds cd and play it very low volume. chicken chicken chicken for calm behavior. do that every night for a week and if he stays calm the next week volume up one level start again.

if it actually storms let him get in the bathtub for goodness sake. if he feels safe there fine. what's the harm? soothing him during a storm especially if he is aroused/stressed actually encourages the stressed behavior. walk by the bathroom once in a while and throw a piece of chicken to him and then leave.

i have heard but not tried peppermint oil on the paw pads is supposed to help too. you could try any number of the natural remedies for stress (rescue remedy etc).
I will have to do that. I always see CDs like that at shopko. Thanks for the advice, I'll even try the peppermint oil too. Storm seasons over though. Oh trust me- he does stay in the bathtub. He wouldn't leave if you tried to make him leave when it's storming..

I feel bad now because I was doing the wrong thing but I'll defiently not try to sooth him- I could see how that could encourage that behavor.

Thanks so much for the advice. I just got to figure out where to get peppermint oil now? .

  16. Ohh I could see how my mom finds humour in it. Hmm, I wonder- what kinds of things do you do to keep your dog ok?

Usually when I'm home I keep telling him it's OK and play with him- and just snuggle with him. My parents are the opposites though- they get more annoyed by him most of the time but he sticks close with them. He isn't allowed on their bed but my mom will wake up next to him when it's storming lol.

I just read that constantly talking to him and reasuring him it was okay was a bad thing to do though. Usually he finds safety in the bathtub- so he usually likes to stay there. .

He doesn't take any food at all. which is unusal for him. But he will usually play most of the time.

He shakes really bad when it's storming so that's his usual behavor. I would love to hear any suggestions/commets you have. He has always been like this - and he's 10 this month. We've had him since he's been around 1/1/2.
