1. 1 hippo............ok, Shar-pei :D
2. Congratulations to Lily. And Congratulations for the new pup too! Like Carol said, take her to the vet--even if she's not sick anymore, she still needs to go for a check up and to start her vaccinations.... HAve fun with dad's pup
3. If the vet thinks he's ok, and he acts ok otherwise, then, yes, the sleeping is probably puppy sleeping. At that age my pup slept about 80% of the time (which hasn't changed that much  ), but when awake she was quite a devil (that hasn't changed much either  ). I'd say that if he is active when he is awake, and just sleeps a lot, then it's normal...
4. I've never even heard of a Carolina Dog :o Do you have any pictures?
5.
I also have never heard of a dog being "mad" and peeing somewhere in the house...dog's do not have minds like us humans and do not inflict revenge as we do...if so, can you imagine what the wild animals would be doing to us for ruining their environment! :o
Ok, point proven. I agree with you now :D
6.
(Ps. I dont think labs/retrievers are great pets for first time owners either, personally, they need lots of time, training, exercise and stimulation, almost as much as a collie, although they are lovely dogs!)
Sorry, what I meant is that any breed can be a great dog for first time owners--if they're willing to put in the time to research and train their dogs--but that only labs and goldens are immediately recommended by dog books as good for first time owners, mellow, good with kids and other pets, etc. Now, I don't believe in this kind of generalizations, but they are made all the same...
7.
Did you even RESEARCH the American Bulldog, which is NOT for first time owners? NEVER have I heard of a puppy getting MAD at it's owner and peeing on the carpet........ :-?
I just wanna say that "NOT for first time owners" doesn't mean much, unless you're looking for a dog that's easy to deal with, in which case you're pretty much left with Goldens and Labs (don't have anything against these breeds, I'm just saying that they are very very popular with first time owners). Now, on the other hand there are many breeds out there which anyone can own, but they're more troublesome--you need to do more research, spend time training and socializing them, be firm with them... But there is nothing wrong with a first time owner (well, sort of) owning a Pei, let's say  And the getting mad part, although I don't think it applies to puppies, I have heard it about mature dogs--who are upset when left alone (even for half an hour) and would go pee on the owner's bed/couch/carpet :o And one more thing... wildturkey's post sort of made me smile because that's how we felt about Hippo when we got her--especially after the first few days, when the pup got used to the house and everything, it's soooooo much work. Not to say it's not fun, but it's a lot of work, you sorta have to put everything else in your life on hold for weeks! But I can say that if you try to solve each one of teh proplems you're having (resaerch each one of them) and then also excercise your dog (somebody on this forum said "a tired dog is a good dog" and I couldn't agree more), the puppy becomes less of a handful... and you can then stop thinking about sending messages in abottle to teh outside world :evilbat:
8. The pulling on skins part is something she never gets to do--all the dogs who play with her pull on her skin and strech it out  And because she can never get grab of anything in return, she's now going for their collars, which she can use tu pull the dogs around :D But with Alza (the Shar-pei) it was just skin pulling on both parts.... Rowie, if you could only see how many goldens and labs are around here... Rowie and you would be in heaven... although my experience with them is that only very few play (Hippo has 2 golden friends, but most of them seem to want to retrieve balls for fun, not play with other dogs) and yes, everybody, we had LOTS of fun at the beach, and I bet by the end, Hippo even forgave me for keeping her on a leash and ruining her chance at licking the faces of all the easy targets laying on the beach, and her chance at finding any dead fish to eat and/or roll in :evilbat:
9. Congratulations, Chaos!
10. Forgot to mention, Holz, that there are 2 or 3 Irish Wolfhounds who come to our park, and my husband is now dreaming of owning one one day :D (and Hippo jumped once in the face of a wolfhound--to get him to play with her, and he was a very calm gent who looked at her like she's a lunatic!)
11. Marble, I know what you're saying about the "lunatic psycho dog "--Hippo has to be on a leash at the beach (except when she's playing) so that she doesn't run in circles and lick eveybody's faces :evilbat:
12. I'm so excited you guys, I've gotta tell! :P We never meet any Shar-pei (apparently they're out of fashion :D ), so it's a very big day for us when we meet one. So far, except for Hippo's parents we've only met three others, and none of them in the park, where they can play... But today we went to the beach in the evening, we had a picnic, and then walked about for about 4 hours  (imagine how Hippo collapsed when she got home!). And we met THREE SHAR-PEI at the beach!!!!! With different owners. One was a chocolate Pei, another one was fawn like Hippo, but much older (9 years old) and grumpy, and the third one was... 6 month and fawn!!! And we met on the beach, so the two of them could play together :jumpie: It was amazing... the first Pei Hippo played with, and they wrestled the same way, threw their bum at each other, pulled on each other's skins (for the first time, Hippo had something to grab on, too :D ) , made devil sounds, wrinkled thier noses, ran with their tails arched backwards... It was at times hard to distinguish which is which, and that's such an unusual feeling for us :shiny: So I'm very very happy, we had a wonderful day! And we took pictures too, which I'll post in the picture part of the forum when we develop them.

cane corso

I don't have a cane corso, but I'd sure like to see pictures of your guys/gals :D (hint to Klara and Galja25)
14. I don't know if this might have anything to do with Zebra's lips, but Hippo's tongue (which is bluish) turns lighter from the heat, so when she's outside running around her tongue's close to pink (a normal dog's tongue :D ) So I was thinking that the colour of Zebra's lips might be changing from heat, if it's not because he's growing up (don't know how old he is).
15. yep, i've seen that too :o "Puppy sale"!!!!!! Since people want anything they buy to be "on sale" (magical words), why can't puppies be? "We wanted a weimeraner, but it wasn't on sale today, so we bought a St. Bernard instead..."
16. One thing you can do before he can actually meet other dogs face to face is carry him around--and take him out in the town, so that he can see other dogs, people of all ages, cars, noises, sirens... everything that he has to know. This kind of outing would be really good for him also because everybody's gonna fawn all over him and want to pet the puppy--although, be warned, this might lead to having a dog who at 9 mo still thinks she should be petted by everybody and allowed to lick faces  and sorry to hear about the bastard breeder
17. We haven't had any big (monstrous) storms since we've had Hippo, but with a regular storm, she just goes to the window to look outside--all strange noises must be investigated :D We (just me and Hippo) were however caught up in a snow storm this past winter, and the wind was so strong that I could barely advance (and no place for shelter, 'cause we were taking a walk in a residential area), and lil Hippo was obviously very confused as to why she couldn't walk ahead anymore :o ... So I picked her up and tried to advance like that--slowly, but the wind was blowing against us and making a whirling sound, so she started howling-whining-barking in my arms... We had to advance with me walking backwards  Thta was quite a walk... luckily, we weren't very far from home.
18. Maybe he'd like other toys better--like a plush toy, or a rope, or a kong... I know it's kinda costly discovering what exactly it is that he likes, but... he's very cute, by the way :P
19. I looked at those too, mouse, and they're very very cute. And the right colour for our pei too :D
20. Hippo does that too sometimes: she poops and then moves over (because she's really disgusted by how poop smells--any dog's, including her own  ) and then she kicks the grass a little. It's quite cute :D
21. Hippo doesn't like the kong at all :o And if you put anything inside the kong, she starts pushing it with her nose, and then scartches at the carpet and tears at it, because she's convinced the food is somewhere under the carpet  But she likes stuffed squeaky toys, nylabones (I have to make sure I only get the extratuff ones, as she once destroyed a nylabone for teeth cleaning within 5 minutes!!!), and her orange ball. And, of course, the toys of the other dogs in the park that she steals and runs in circles with
22. We live in an apartment too, but our dog goes to the bathroom outside... and not to side with your mom (because she seems generally unreasonable), but when Hippo was in her first weeks with us and couldn't get through the night without going to the bathroom, I'd wake up and clean it because it smelled--I am a little obssessed, so maybe that's the reason  But if Cosmic is 6 months now he should be able to go through the night without going to teh bathroom--you might wanna teach him to go to the bathroom only outside? And about the older dogs--I noticed from the park that youngsters play together and older dogs tend not to play at all, they just walk about... So if you do end up getting a second dog, make sure their activity level (and age, I'd say) is close. Goog luck with trying to find somebody to walk Cosmic...
23. When my pup got bitten and had a few bite marks on her cheeks, the vet gave us a veterinary ointment called Hibitane--don't know if you can get from a petstore, or just from the vet. It works very well though...
