1. maybe she associates the bed with a higher rank position? maybe she's protecting her alpha's den? :D and since you and freebee are there with her, she probably feels like she has protection... I'm just saying, I don't know really... but I should be working, I have a deadline to meet, so I suddenly feel like resonding even to posts that I have no idea about  Hmmmm... maybe I should just go back to work
2. Yeah, sometime they won't eat because they're too tired--and you can imagine how much work he put in redecorating your house, he deserves the rest :evilbat: I think he'd be throwing up if there was something he ate... And since he hasn't done this before, I don't think it's separation anxiety... My Hippo will push things off the tabes and be bratty if we're late with our walk--and she only does it so you can see it :evilbat: and she steals my stuffed teddybears and slobbers them just to show all the bad things she could do if we keep keeping her in the house :evilbat: So I must say: sounds like you too have a little monster :evilbat:
3. I thought... I hope... this person was just trying to find out the breed of that dog in the movie, not that s/he actually wanted that kind of dog :o
4. yeah, she'll be ok, you'll see... keep up the courage!
5.
Are peis prone to dog aggression?
I have to say yes, IF not socialized extensively. they also tend to be very protective of their own (yard, house, people) if not taught otherwise. However, my Hippo is very, very dog-friendly, all and any dogs... in fact, she's really good with dogs who have problems: even though the said dog will try to snap at her or bite her, she'll just turn her head on the side and persist in saying hello  and here's Hippo getting beaten up by a schnoodle... and she plays like this with all kinds of dogs at our doggie park :D
6. yeah, Hippo is referred to as a "wrinkle dog" most of the time  and sure Jada looks like Hippo's identical twin  and they're both related to Horsefeather's standard poodles, and Mei-mei's great dane--all of them will eventually turn into vicious pitbulls :evilbat: Speaking of which, a lady at the dog park who has a very cute 2 year old rottie that Hippo plays with told me that somebody asked her "what's she gonna do when her rottie turns vicious?" I guess it's something to consider :evilbat: Some people...
7.
Great...god forbid she ever bite anyone. The media will be screaming, "Oh my god, it's a vicious pit bull!"
exactly! (not that she'd ever bite anyone--she's very friendly, but...) That's how most of the media stories on pitbull attacks get written--with this much knowledge about dog breeds  Yes, mouse, I get asked what breed she is, but that's ok, because some people don't know and wanna find out. I don't know all the breeds. But then I don't assume either :x
8. I was walking home from the park yesterday, when a lady on a bike stopped right beside me and Hippo and asked me--"is that a pitbull?" :o Now look at Hippo's face and tell me if this person could have been in her right mind  ok, I'm ready to admit that from a distance her body looks athletic, vaguely like a pit's, but, really, the wrinkles???!!!
9. actually, I think the computers do the censoring--that is, if you spell the name in a certain (unpermitted) way :D You wouldn't know that unless you tried to write using unpermitted words :evilbat:
10. I hear you, julie: I didn't take hippo to classes either for many reasons: I hate "organized" fun and classes, me and my husband had the time to read a lot about training and how to deal with different issues, so we didn't think it necessary to go to classes, and we live beside a park where Hippo gets to socialize with dogs every day twice a day (if anything, she's too well-sociaized and likes dogs a little too much :D ) And yes, I enjoy training her, and I think she's pretty well-trained. And I get pissed off when people ask me "did she go to obedience school?" as if that is the only reason she would be well-trained. To me that sounds a lot like "is your kid taking piano lessons? Mine is... and she's already publishing poetry at 5" :agrue: Anyway, as you can tell, I'm not the person for "activities" And I'm really happy that I can train and socialize Hippo on my own terms, and that these activities are just fun--not tainted in any way by going to school
11. I'm just gonna say the 5 good things and 5 not so good things about Hippo--they might not apply to the whole breed though... Breed: Chinese Shar-pei (plural: also Shar-pei) GOOD: 1. wrinkle face!!! :evilbat: 2. loves to wrestle with all dogs (she LOVES dogs)--it's soooo funny to watch her playing, she's a little clown  3. good off-leash, usually listens well 4. not afraid of anything, very forward with dogs and people 5. independent little monster 6. sleeps for the whole time when indoors (makes a great apartment dog for somebody willing to take her to the park for about 3 hours/day  If she gets 2 proper walks/wrestling, you can work at home in peace) Not so good 1. obssessed with kids and squeaky voices--will jump up on kids to lick their faces and knock them over--she gets VERY excited around them 2. will chase anything that moves, and probably terrorize any other kind of pet you'd have 3. thinks she HAS TO meet and play with all the dogs, even if they're on the other side of the street--and she'll pull on the leash to get to them 4. doesn't care if she's scolded and she'll only obey commands for FOOD--obssessed with food to the point that she'll go investigate strangers' pockets  5. doesn't care much for petting--she'll go to strangers to see if they have food, but she won't stay for any of the petting stuff. Looks cuddly, but she's not :evilbat: mouse, and sharpei girl, I'm sure you can add to or disagree with my review :D
12.
Wow...that is quite pricy for neutering! Around here, I don't think a female is even $100.
WHAT? :o :o :o Now I'm really mad! Do you have any idea how much Hippo was? Almost 400$!!!! Just blood tests and desexing female 10-20 kg (she was 14 kg at the time, I think). I actually heard people from Toronto that they went to country vets for the desexing because it's so darn expensive here! Well, if I didn't alreday think vets were gauging us, now I'd think it....
13. ooooohh, I hope sassy's gonna be ok  any news yet?
14. try this website: http://www.itsfortheanimals.com/BLUE.HTM I think that's what K was talking about--I've never used the blue powder myself, but I've heard it works wonders.
15.
It's actually been proposed as well that Columbus didnt "discover" America..... That Lief Erikkson did, a few hundred years before....
And that America wasn't in much need to be "discovered" as the "Indians"/aboriginal people knew it was there already
16.
You Hippo sounds like a happy little fellow who is eager to please...you would have fun with him in obedience trials.
compete? us??????????!!!!! Hippo isn't that eager to please actually, as much as she loves food  So if there are a lot of treats involved in obedience trials, she might do ok :evilbat: Otherwise, slim chance :D
17. like you said, sushi, she's only offering behaviours when she really wants a treat. it doesn't bother me at all, I think it's funny. I guess I was just curious why she did it :D
18. Hippo wishes happy thanksgiving to all canadian doggies on dogomania. She was very spoiled today: she got her own thanksgiving meal, with boiled chicken, potatoes, carrots, and peas :D Got herself stuffed and fell asleep in the middle of begging from our table  how did your (spoilt) dogs spend thanksgiving?
19. ok, I'm curious about something, guys... Whenever one of us is preparing Hippo's liver treats, or getting her bowl on the counter to mix some kind of unusual food (she usually gets kibble), she wil start showing us all the tricks she knows--she lays down, sits, shakes a paw... We don't give in to that--that is, we always wait for her to get up before asking that she lays down to get the treat  But I'm curious: is she showing submission (begging us to feed her), or trying to manipulate us?
20. Holz, I agree with the others that it's a dominance issue... A way to make him stop that right away is using a spray bottle (you know, the kind that you use to water the plant leaves): whenever he tries to hump anyone's leg, the person shpould say "no" and spray him in the face. He won't like the water, and he'll learn the meaning of the word "no", which he needs to know anyway. Now, I'm not an expert in canine behaviour, and maybe it has something to do with the puppy being taken from his mom too young, but I just wanted to say that the fact somebody has a degree doesn't absolve her of being a moron. I'm now doing my Ph.D.--do you think that I can't say idiotic things sometime? Let's be serious :evilbat:
21.
why would they call a Pug an "Ori"?
that I have no idea :D maybe pug-pei is to hard to say :o
22. That's right, DogPaddle! and, like the cockapoo for example, they also think that by crossing a pei with a pug, you're gonna get rid of the potential health problems of both breeds  Also, it is relatively common with the Shar-pei to get entropion (rolling in of the eye lids) and need an operation for that. With the bulgy eyes of pugs, that problem could be countered--except it doesn't always work like that, that is, we can't choose the good traits of one breed and good traits of the other one and then mix them together. So, what I'd say to somebody looking for an ori-pei is: get a pug if you want a really small dog, or look for a mini shar-pei. There are shar-pei breeders who also breed 15-17 inches shar-pei and they can give you a size guarantee that you won't end up with a 20 inch tall shar-pei. With Ori-pei there is no guarantee regarding their size, as puppies from the same litter can vary quite a lot in size...
23. Prairie Nature's variety--and I'm really happy with it. I fed Innova (also a health food) for a very short time (2 months), as Hippo hated it :D And I've given her a sample of wellness, which she loved, bur I can't stand the fishy smell so she's not getting it (I don't eat fish and the smell of it makes me sick--for somebody who hates fish less than I do, Wellness might be a good choice too).
24.
What is the ori half of the mix?
pug
25. Hippo had a pocket with fluid in it--and it staid like that for about 2 weeks before it started going back. Vet said that he could draw the fluid out with a syringe, but it would most likely come back. So don't worry, it will go back on its own. And her energy level will come back too in a few days--and believe me, you won't like that :D Because she wasn't allowed to run mad off-leash, Hippo will run in circles in the house, and destroy all her toys, and generally be a nuisance  Thta's what in store for you
