1. I just noticed I have 497 posts and I think at 500 I'm getting another paw, so I figured I'd make the rest of the posts here and get it over with :evilbat:
2. congratulations. I need to see pictures, because I can never figure how to read the tv guide (not a big tv fan), so I don't have any hope of watching you on tv
3. Thank you. Reading all this makes me realize how lucky I am :evilbat: Hippo is shedding a little now, and in the fall--but that's all. I have an easy life
4. "Is that a pit bull?" With all them wrinkles and that meaty mouth sure looks like one. "That's a shi tzu, right?" Yep, starts with "sh", might as well be shi tzu  "this isn't a pure bred, right?" Me: "yes, she's a shar-pei." "But she doesn't have any wrinkles on her body--is she gonna grow more?" Me: "They're not supposed to have wrinkles all over--what you saw in pictures are probably puppies." "Are you sure?" "You have to clean her wrinkles with q-tips, you know" Foolish me, I've just been bathing her like any other dog! To her: "why do you look so worried?" And they think they're being original when I'm hearing this for the 100th time!
5. Cleo, here's a wonderful shar-pei rescue site, and I know that sometime they get shar-pei mixes too (or they hear of mixes being in shelters in need of rescue)--why don't you contact them and let them know you'd be interested in a shar-pei mix? http://www.californiasharpeirescue.com/ Word of caution: I know of one person who has a shar-pei mix and her dog is still fevering. So you can never be 100% sure. But I resolved that the risk comes with this wonderful breed, and I could never have any other dog.
6. I agree with everybody--around 8 hours is fine for a dog, as long as they're getting enough exercise. I work at home too, but once in a while I have a day when I have to be out for 8-9 hours, and Hippo is fine. She has full run of the house, and never touched anything--not even her toys  --when we're out. She just sleeps for the whole time...
7. I wouldn't gte rid of my dog for something like that... I think most dogs would get scared if something (people or object) suddenly fell over them. Also it is instinctual for dogs to "attack" (some will bark, some will pull on your clothes) if you've suddenly fallen down--I'm not sure about that, but I believe it has to do with the pack rules: if alpha is suddenly hurt, they need to assume control... Why I wouldn't get rid of Zoey is because I think she just bit out of fear--if she was really aggressive, she could have done a lot more damage to your husband's face... And the fact that she plays taough with Cody doesn't mean anything.. many dogs do, it's just doggie behaviour.
8. We were walking in the park, and Hippo wsa play-wrestling with a German Shepard mix (friend of hers)... Now we, the owners, were a little ahead of the two dogs, and were turned back looking at them and calling them to come along and continue our walk together, when two women who were just passing by (with no dogs) said to us: "These dogs are killing each other, do something!" They were genuinely concerned--though the two dogs weren't making any noise at all... We told them they were just playing, but they stopped and continued to stare at the two of them until the dogs came running and got in front of us so we could continue walking... This is one of the funniest things that ever happenned to me
9. your photos aren't huge at all and they're hilarious
10. I wouldn't give her any yoghurt until her stomach is ok--I know from myself that yoghurt is diuretic
11. yeah, right--"leave your pet elsewhere"... like what? What idiots, as if any apartment, no matter how much I liked it, would be worth my getting rid of my pet!!!!!
12. I saw the pictures, thanks--it does look like a lot of trails in your backyard, but how can you tell it's not just from the dogs? And Freebee does look like she's on a hunt
13.
Sad to say, but science is my life...........that's the life of a Ph.D. student
I'm a Ph.D. student too--just not a very serious one  No, seriously, I do like dogs far better than working
14. sooo... the word has got around and all the dogs know now how the dishwashers work
15. 1. 2 times for walks (and 3-4 more times to go potty--we live in an apartment) 2. between 150 and 180 minutes--and more in summer. 3. Train basic obedience (Come when called, heel, sit, lie down, etc.) + talk to her (that definitely requires her to use her head, right? ) 4. dogs are my life :D
16. that's very scary... I'm glad they're both ok
17. courtnek, why don't you try "come, eh?" in a weird accent--I'm sure that will work
18. that is sooo cool... I love your new ava and the other animation thingy :D
19. My Hippo, who doesn't try to bury anything else, wsa obssessed with burying her marrow bone too--she got one for Xmas, and she never showed any interest in eating it, but she was obssessed with burying it in her bed evrytime we'd take it out of there and hand it back to her  The bone had to be burried in her bed! So maybe it's something about the bones that they want to bury them... who know, dogs are just weird
20. courtnek, if you go to the link kendalyn put up, you'll see that these numbers represent the number of pure breds registered last year :D AKC makes a list of "most popular breeds" based on how many new dogs have been registered with them that year.
21. and yes, you can get her spayed--either right now, or when her heat is over (I think it might be cheaper to get her spayed when she's not in heat, but check with your vet).
