1. I wish I knew more about computers! I tried to get at the list too, but no luck. I imagine they need all the standard items that shelters and rescues need only more, AND RIGHT NOW! Probably most needed is a stream of cash donations so the volunteers caring for these needy animals can purchase exactly what is needed. Oops! Just check the topic review box as I was typing this. I'll take a look at the list now!
2. Egg - He's adorable! Surely someone must want him. Is there any chance of Dad and Grandmother changing their minds? :(
3. Thanks K for posting the information about donations and supplies. You are always on top of things!
4. Poor dogs! I cannot imagine being one of the rescue workers whose responsibility it was to go into that mess and find all these dogs in those horrible conditions. It's probably a good thing that the "owners" were in custody by that time. Hopefully animal lovers will pitch in to help care for and place all these deserving dogs. I agree with Jan when she writes....."why did it get to 500 dogs in terrible conditions?" Surely action could have been taken before now! Were these people mentally unbalanced?
5. I've had to give my rottie buffered aspirin for joint pain. He doesn't tolerate it very well - it irritates his stomach. That is one experience. On the other hand my husband had a chow/lab mix that had it every day for a year or so and he tolerated it very well. He passed away of old age like your boy. Jarvis must have been a great dog! :)
6. Poofy-You are so lucky you have small piles of vomit!!! Ben hacked up his supper one night on the kitchen floor. We live in a 120 year old farmhouse, so the floor is not quite level. The disgusting mess had formed a huge flat pile the size of a cow patty and the thinner stuff had run across the floor and under the counter. I don't know where it all came from! He ate a normal size evening meal; I had a hard time keeping myself together while I cleaned it up! :o :ices_blah: So, you see, small piles are truly a blessing in disguise! And as for dog hair....There's not a square inch in my house, car, or clothing from which dog hairs don't lurk and spring out at the most inconvenient times. Just last Saturday while pulling on my red fuzzy gloves at the grocery store checkout, I noticed the checker staring at my hands. White dog hairs were everywhere, sticking straight out of the material. I guess I must have given Ben a good tousle before leaving for the store. I grabbed my receipt and headed back to the safety of my dog hair filled car!
7. :o What's the big attraction in owning an aggressive dog and breeding for that trait? My rottie is a sweetheart even though his breed gets plenty of bad press. I got him after I did a lot of reading and talking with rottie owners. The attraction for me was personality, coloring, and build. They are handsome loyal dogs. If he had a mean bone in his body I wouldn't have him. He can be a little willful, but with just a little refresher course about his manners, via voice and rewards, he remembers his job. Oh, he is an inside dog all the time! No chains...he spent the first 8 months of his life on a chain in his former owner's yard. The guy we purchased him from trained dogs for a local sheriff department! Hmmm.... :-? When we pulled up an saw the deep groove all the way around the old car I knew we would take him home regardless of what he looked like! Couldn't leave him there! Again I pose this question: What is the attraction people feel toward aggressive dogs? Is it a p****** contest?
8. Poor Jake! Dogs are absolutely the most forgiving creatures on the planet. It's a miracle that he allows any human near him at all. Best hope for his recovery. As for the disgusting slimebags who tortured him, lets hunt them up and give them a dose of their own medicine. Pull their teeth out, break their bones, and sick vicious dogs on them time after time! As far as my husband and I are concerned they are not even members of the human race. Foul people!
9. Grab the tissues! Your story made me think about an experience that Ben, my saint, had at school. About 3 years ago he first visited in my urban classroom and latched onto one of my students who lived in absolutely horrible circumstances and hadn't had much success in the traditional classroom. This fourth grader was smart as a whip with a huge vocabulary, but was very different in appearance and manner from the average kid. He had reached the age where he had really begun to notice that his differences set him apart. We had independent work time for language arts during which I meet with small groups for writing and guided reading, etc. I happened to glance up from my work to see "Logan" sitting on the floor with Ben sprawled over his legs. Logan was tenderly stroking Ben's head and crooning to him. That is where they stayed for quite a while. For the rest of the day Ben hung around his desk, leaning on his legs, and sticking like velcro to him. At the end of the day as we were lined up to go out with Ben on his lead, Logan leaned in close to me and whispered with a delighted grin, "Did you notice how Ben likes me? Can he come to school again?" Rest assured, he did! Dogs are fantastic! Unconditional love on four legs. I believe every classroom should have a dog full time.
10. I'm so happy to hear your encouraging post about Ben. :D I'll keep him in my prayers!
11. Poor Haley! Things like this happen due to carelessness or evil intentions. :x Responsible hunters would never shoot a dog like that. We live in a rural county in Michigan that is mostly farming country. We have to keep our dogs on our property, because farmers can legally shoot dogs that wander their property and "harrass" their livestock. So our dogs are never outside without direct supervision (even though we have a lot of woods they could wander through).

Spiked Collars

Spiked collars are to "tough dogs" as fringed leather saddlebags are to "Harley Riders"? 8)

Puppy Poem

Found this poem on DogQuotes.com: The Life of a Puppy This morning, I woke up & kissed my dad's head. I peed on the carpet, then went back to bed. "The life of a puppy, oh my, this is great." Then I thought about breakfast," I hope it's not late." Mom took me outside, we walked for a while. This never fails to make Mama smile. I sniffed of everything, that we did pass, I ate something weird - it gave me gas. I'm sure God loves me, I know that is true. He gave me so many great things to chew. Rugs, plants or rocks, I really don't care. What I truly like best, is Dad's underwear. That obedience book, was sort of yummy. Though it didn't sit well on my poor puppy tummy. I threw up a bit, but that was all right, When Mom found it later, I was well out of sight. I made streamers of T. P., while running at full speed. Mom is pretty quick -- but I was still in the lead. I flew under the bed, and Mom flew past, She stopped-shook her head, and breathed, "You're too fast." Mama later phoned Daddy, and said, "It was frightening!" That afternoon, she was sure I'd pooped lightning. She'd sat at the computer, while I chewed the cord, She thought I was mad, but I was just bored. When Mama had enough, couldn't take anymore, That's when my tushy got shoved out the door. I love it inside, but outside is best. Lay in the cool grass, and had a good rest. That didn't last long, there was too much to do-- Can't quite remember where I hid Daddy's shoe. I found an old bone, and scratched at a flea, I watched the dumb squirrels as they jumped in a tree. I barked at the kids, when they got off the bus. I can't figure out why this makes Mama fuss. I barked at the neighbor, I barked at the wind. I barked and barked, till Mom yelled, "COME IN." The sun dipped in the west-soon Daddy would come! I sure love my daddy: we always have fun. I barked at my daddy, then turned on my charms, I woo-wooed, "Hello," then jumped in his arms. Sitting under the table -- it's sooo hard to wait. Daddy slipped me a goodie right off his plate. I raced through the house, and scattered my toys, Ricocheted off the furniture, and made lots of noise. Mom found her purse - the one I abused. Daddy let loose a chuckle. Mom asked "Amused??" I cowered down low, I must be in trouble. Dad said, "Wasn't MY boy, it must be his double!" Mom turned off the TV, and said,"Time for bed." Dad said "Let's go boy," and patted my head. I got in my spot, between Mom and Dad, I thought 'bout my day and what fun I had. Mama kicked out my bone from the covers below, Then let loose a sigh -- a sigh deep and low. She gave me a kiss, and snuggled me tight, And whispered so softly, 'My darling goodnight'. Unknown Gotta love puppies! I once had a puppy named Peppermint who was the spitting "image" of the puppy in this poem. I envy all of you who now have new puppies!

Food!

My dogs get a mixture of kibble and homemade "stew" made from ground beef, diced potatoes, and chopped celery and carrots. I cook the beef, add a little water, then toss in the cut vegetables and simmer till tender. The boys like it and it has reduced flatulence! Max's coat has really improved since adding this to his diet. The cost is more than canned food would be, but the boys eat much better with the stew. I can make a week's supply at a time saved in glad bowls and put in the freezer. Then it's simple to microwave and mix with the dry food. Max would eat his meat raw, but Ben prefers it cooked. The boys also get meat scraps-not gristle or anything gross-from the table. :eating:

Foster Homes

No, sadly we don't foster dogs. We have picked up strays and returned them to their homes, that sort of thing. Luckily we have not had to take any dog to the humane society's shelter! We donate to our local shelter as well, now that they are a no-kill shelter. A welcome change! I think people who foster dogs are fantastic, altruistic folks. My husband and I have always adopted adult or young adult dogs who need a home. It's wonderful to be able to learn about your prospective new dog from it's foster family. We have always found their insight valuable when adopting. My husband and I both work full-time in demanding jobs. We have two large dogs, and two cats in our rather small farmhouse and feel that fostering at this point in time would upset the balance among our four-legged family. Sigh! Maybe when I retire we could foster! People who foster are GREAT! :Dog_run:
17. Petition signed. I agree that the worst part of the entire incident was when the officers showed utter disregard for the grief of the family and considered the whole thing a joke. It wouldn't be a joke if they or their families were on the receiving end! Good way to Protect and Serve! Maybe dealing with the worst side of the public has made them believe that everyone they stop is guilty until proved innocent. Police are people and they make mistakes just like the rest of us, but these mistakes shouldn't happen on the job when they have the power of life and death over us. :o

Training Problems

 What a MORON!! Any intelligent person would just have purchased a trash container with a dog proof lid (if they didn't want to take the time to train properly), instead of abusing the dog! You are right. Some people do not deserve a dog OR an animal of ANY kind. :x
19. So funny! So true!!! But don't tell my cats I think so!
20. It's just criminal. Many people think that dogs, cats, and other pets have no feelings. My sister works with a person (or two) that says, "Well, you know they don't feel things the same way we do"...as an excuse for kicking or otherwise abusing a dog. :x Maybe this woman was one of those kind (ignorant) or perhaps she's not quite "all there"!
21. My saint is a chow hound; eating anything and everything (his regular feeding twice daily plus any treat he can beg off us)! But my rottie is particular about his food. If he is not hungry he doesn't eat his meal, but always gobbles up the next one. In my experience (unless the dog is ill or upset) dogs eat when they are hungry. Unlike myself, who can eat anytime unfortunately!!
22. Welcome GreatDaneLover! It's great to read the post of another dog lover from Michigan! Hope to see pics of your spoiled danes! See pictures of my boys Ben and Max at: http://groups.msn.com/Dogomania/shoebox.msnw
