1. Over many years I have had a number of different breeds but now only have 2 Miniature Pinschers, recently lost my lovely Border Terrier, Ben, so these laws don't effect me AT THE MOMENT but where is it going to stop? Keep your eyes and ears open for any hint of BSL over there, it tends to be brought in quietly and suddenly there it is!
2. I believe a number of the prohibited breeds have been PTS. even although they may be pets with no reason for this except they are identified as a particular breed, even this id. can be questionable as some of the bully breeds can be hard to put a positive breed name to and there aren't really any experts here in this field, so can be a bit hit and miss. I am waiting for our Ranger to call here as he often does for a cuppa when down this way and I've got that "Pick the Pit" ready to show him. Then there are severe guidelines for fencing, notices to be erected and muzzle and leash laws. Brat, BK just checked my bank balance, just a bit short, have to wait till next pension day!

Lovely pics. Couldn't find any Miniature Pinschers, are there any on there? Not being able to read the descriptions made it a bit harder
4. BJ I think my days of fighting for causes is over. There is just so much stupidity in the world, one wonders what the coming years hold. There's no loyalty in the workplace, promises are broken, the 'Look after yourself, brother, I'm alright' attitude disgusts me. Can you tell I'm on a downer :( It's Anzac day here with the services, marches, etc. and our soldiers in Iraq. A day for remembrance of a lot of places, people and happenings. TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY :drinking: I think all us dog folk should just buy a big island and go there! Anyone want to buy Australia?
5. Crazy, isn't it! The EDBA (Endangered Dog Breeds Assoc) are trying to fight these stupid laws but it's an uphill battle. I am probably one of those complacant ones having only small dogs but it's even starting to scare me. Our Government is bringing in all these new laws and apparently giving individual Councils the power to interrupt them in their own way. Queensalnd have gone overboard and apparently Western Aussie are also getting on the band wagon. I believe some Councils in Melbourne area are bringing in some bans as well. My last Dog Reg. account from my local shire had a new attachment - "Restricted Breeds Declaration" Am. Pit Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brassiliero, Japanese Tosa. You have to sign a declaration stating you do not own or have these breeds on your property. Queried the local ranger and he said there weren't any Fila or Tosa in Aussie. Just shows what they know!!! Some Q'land owners have had dogs PTS after the supposedly expert identification just because of breed, others have sent their dogs interstate to escape this ridiculous situation. I don't know how anyone can keep up with what's going on apart from attending every Gov. sitting and Council meeting to hear what is being done without consultation with people who know. Again our Kennel Assoc's appear to be sitting on their butts. BK it's a bit like the dingo situation, there doesn't appear to be anyone who knows better or cares in high places. PS - New Zealand is also bring in 'Banned Breeds' legislation.
6. The following (it's long!) is the list of Councils in one State here, Queensland, which have brought in these stupid dog breed laws. Other States are gradually sneaking in bans on various breeds, never mind the deed, just ban the breed  Our Kennel Control Assoc. appears to be a toothless tiger, allowing all sorts of restrictions being made legal and the main ones penalised are those who try to do the right thing. A bit more attention to puppy farms and 'designer' dog breeders would probably do more good....................................................................................... All councils listed here..that have restrictions, bans or have breeds classed as DD Type of declaration whether it be Dangerous or Prohibited or Restricted Key = DD (Dangerous Dog) P (Prohibited) R (Restricted) *Mount Morgan Shire Council has also classed any dog as dangerous that is 60 or more kilos in weight - A height of more than 1100mm ((44 inches) it does not state where measurement to be taken from) - Any dog used for hunting of wild game (again not stated as currently or originally bred to) They have also misspelt Maremma. **Mackay City Council has misspelt Fila Brasiliero & Only classed the Tosa as DD ***Burnett Shire has misspelt Dogo Argentino in their law. ****Chinchilla Shire has misspelt the Fila and Dogo in its law. 7. Please sign the Canadian Petition against BSL. http://www.petitiononline.com/dakota/petition.html I was told by Loraine, who is a Rottweiler Breeder in Canada that the proposed legislation, St. Johns Newfoundland, Canada, is aimed at the following dog breeds: Bull Breeds; Rottweilers; Shepherds; Akitas; Dogos; Chows; Dobermans; Wolf hybrids; and Huskies. This is from another site.
8. This topic may have come up before, I've not been keeping up with all the goings on here, so apologise if I'm going over old ground! In Aussie there are some States who are going overboard with their Breed Specific Legislation and cause an awful lot of heartache. I have just read that Canada is going to add to their allready banned breeds list - Dalmations, Chows, German Shepherds, Huskies. Is this true? Is there any lobbying being done on behalf of owners? And MOST importantly, where is it going to end?
9. Guilty too! I always save them a bit of whatever and they sit and watch each mouthful I take. If I am a bit slow, Sam will give a jump in the air and a bark to tell me to hurry up. Whenever I go out and as this nearly always consists of a fair journey (shopping is 150ks away) I always get a chicken for lunch and the dogs share. Last week the dogs and I had to go to my son's place, 500ks away, stayed overnight, got home 8pm. Got the dogs meal first, Sam wouldn't even look at his. 'Oh. oh he's sick!' Just laid on the floor looking sad. Got my meal and Sam came to life, couldn't eat his bit after fast enough. I think he was sulking because I didn't get our chicken when we were away. It is the first time in his nearly 7 years that we have gone on a long trip without getting our chicken treat. What do you think?
10. Many, many years ago a friend and I were way out in the bush on a dirt road (now don't ask what we were doing out there! sightseeing?) anyway we saw this big dog lying in the bush. When we went over we could see he was hurt, blood on the back legs. We could pat him but when we tried to move him he snapped at us. My friend said 'give me your pantyhose' 'What?'. So off came the pantyhose and he made a great muzzle out of them. We were able to take the dog to a Vet. who recognised the dog and notified the owner. Dog was fixed and returned. So if you're faced with trouble, remember the pantyhose, girls. It can be tied fairly tight but will still have enough give not to hurt the dog and sometimes these things have to be done for the dog's benefit.
11. Phew, lucky they don't have that sort of ruling here in Aussie. Me thinks there might be a few less dogs in the ring  I wouldn't think a throat op. would change the appearance but perhaps it is linked to a genetic problem. I like the idea of the rule as long as it is administered properly. Feel sorry for the owners, what a let down but if them's the rules! Please let us know what the result is.
12. Never mind Hobbit, when I come over to America I'll organise a Kelpie Show just for you, I'll even judge it too, so you had better be nice to me  This is my only comment on 'Conformation', been there, done that, eh Hobbit

Dog Books

Hey, Newfiemom, perhaps you could start a lending library  One of the best basic books I have is 'Dogs and How to Breed Them' by Hilary Harmer. Not on training but as the title states 'breeding', it is in layman language and has been loaned to many friends having their first litters. It's an oldie, some bits might be behind the times but is still my 'bible on whelping'.
14. Still off topic, but thanks Koolie, am still looking for decent pics of others from over the years.
15. Perhaps the proposed rule about deleting people who dont post for a certain time is being a bit harsh unless perhaps you would be looking at a fairly long stretch, say, 12 months. I have not posted here for a while, finding it hard to work up the enthusiasim since losing Ben BUT I still like to visit the forums and would like to continue to think of myself as still a member.

floors

Great idea  I'll have to find something small enough for a Min Pin. One good thing is that it is one less set of paw prints on a freshly mopped floor
17. Good luck, Pumpkin. I'll think of you while taking my sedate half mile stroll...60 miles...sheesh

floors

This is probably a bit unusual but I have one girl who just wont go on a slippery floor. I have both carpet and wood floors and have to have rugs on the smooth floors for her. If a rug gets moved and she cant reach the next one she will stand at the edge and bark. When I take the rugs up to clean she is marooned in on the carpet. So perhaps you should check first that yours will even walk on the smooth stuff. She is the only one I have had like this, don't know why she does it, she has been like it from the first day I got her. If I put her down on the smooth area, she will panic and legs go in all directions. Just another quirky thing these dogs can come up with
19. Positive thoughts and good wishes coming your way. How is she?
20. My thoughts are with you. The pain just sits there.
21. Thanks all for the lovely thoughts. It's taken till now to be able to reply and I'm still crying, miss that cold nose on my foot. I have been reading some of the posts and there's a lot of heartache on the board at the moment. Think I'll raise cabbages from now on! My other two are very subdued and I know this is my fault, I try to be happier for them and they miss Ben as well. He always slept on my bed and Sam and Pebbles look there each morning. In a while they can sleep on the bed with me, I miss that doggy bump under the blanket. My thoughts are with everyone going through the heartbreak of losing a loved pet.
22. Over the last few days Ben had gotten worse, yesterday he couldn't stand up by himself, just laid flat in his bed. I nursed him right through the night and this morning had him PTS. Oh God, it hurts. Please let there be a heaven for these little people. Rest in Peace, Ben. Marvellous Memories.
23. A very cautious update - Last couple of days Ben has shown periods of improvement. He will sleep very heavily for a few hours then seems a bit stronger when I take him out. I think his eyesight or lack of, is affecting him quite a bit. Yesterday he went for a slow walk right around the yard by himself, (with me hovering a few feet behind). Veered around most things but did bump into others. Tonight he found his way from the lounge room to the kitchen when I was getting their meal ready, I neary cried when I turned around and there he was! At the moment he is sleeping his big adventure off. So for now I am having a few more "up" times and starting to hope for a good outcome.
24. That's great news Mei Mei. Know what you mean about the bills, I'm not looking forward to mine altho. my Vet. has the policy that all follow-up visits for the same condition he doesn't charge a consulation, just for any meds. tests, etc. Blood tests here aren't cheap and I'm surprized Ben has any blood left, he did so many. Prognosis is just a 'wait and see'. Lot of fluid behind his eyes is hopefully all that is affecting his sight. His hearing has improved and appears to be getting sense of smell back. As it is a 6 weeks course of meds. I am praying his sight will also improve.
25. Wednesday 10.30am. By Sunday lunchtime Ben was running a temp. still very lethargic, so off to the Vet. Ben is on anti-biotics for a week. Today he seems a bit brighter and stronger, he walked further up the yard on a lead with me trailing behind, first time he has gone past the grass outside the back door. His eyesight is still a puzzle, sometimes seems to have a little then later will walk into something. Where's Mei Mei? Or have I missed something?
