jonesyluv
I'm hoping someone can help me out here. A couple of weeks ago I was at someone's house and they had this gorgeous dog. I asked what the breed was, but of course I forgot - twice. Anyway, the dog was still a puppy, but he was already a large dog. The owner said he was only going to get even bigger. Her friend told me that every week when they first got the dog he would grow a one-third bigger than he was the week before, so he grew pretty quickly. The first thought I had when I saw this dog was that he looked like a bear. He had puffy dark grey hair, very large, and was very quiet. His owner said that he is a quiet dog and very good with kids, completely even-tempered. She also said that he was a kind of Belgian Sheperd, but he didn't look like any that I had ever seen. If anyone knows of any breed this could be please help me out. This has been driving me crazy for weeks. I fell in love with him and would love to research them more! DogPaddle
There are three dogs that come to mind immediately when you say Belgian Sheepdog. Belgian Malinois Belgian Sheepdog - Groenendael Belgian Tervuren Unfortunately none of them are grey and fluffy and they are only slightly larger than middles sized dogs, they are high energy and drive (not quiet) and not paticularly good with kids although they wouldn't be bad for dog savy children over say 9 years of age approximately. Anyone else have a guess. Post some pics it may help us.
jonesyluv
I've seen pictures of those sheperds, but the dog doesn't look anything like those. I wish I had a picture, but I was just around for about 15 minutes so I wasn't able to get to know the dog more. I've found some dogs online that kind of looked like it. It looked kind of like a Bouvier des Flandres, but a lot bigger. This dog didn't really have a shape to it, more like a gigantic, quiet ball of frizzy fur. I couldn't even see its face. He was not excitable at all and didn't even care that I was there. [/img]
rotten_two
the grey is throwing me. could it be a giant schnauzer? if a puppy and ungroomed he could be a fluff ball but they are not so aloof. i dunno will have to think on it a bit. do you know if it was a purebred or a mix? jonesyluv
Maybe I should be more clear on the color. It was a dark grey, nearly black. Sorry, should have said that. I'm pretty sure it was pure-blood because I was told what its breed was, they didn't say it was a mix of anything. All I can remember it that I think the breed was one word - blast my memory, lol. I know it was not a common breed because I had never heard of it before. The dog definently looked like it was not a show dog just a pet, so it could weigh a little more than it should and they might have let the hair grow out. Oh dear, I think this makes everything more confusing.

jonesyluv
After some more research, I'm pretty sure the dog was a bouvier des flandres. He was just a little unkept, but gorgeous. Anyone know any that are being given away in NJ, lol?
DogPaddle
Bouviers are nice dogs. You should do some research if you are interested in one. They are not all calm and docile - although adequate excercise and training go a very long way to making them so. Here is a link to start with. Of course no dogs are free, even when there is no cost to adopt them, vet bills, emergencies, food, collars, toys etc add up fast but adopting costs some less than buying from a breeder and you have the satisfaction of providing a much needed home to a dog whose temperment is already known. Check out Petfinder. There are no bouviers in NJ but there are a couple close. They aren't common dogs so you could just keep checking back with petfinder until a suitable one occurs within a few hours of you.
jonesyluv
I'll be sure to research more about these dogs. I'm still debating whether to get another dog or not, either way its not going to be anytime soon. Adoption is definitely for more, puppies are cute, but older dogs need love too. Thanks everyone!
