What color is my poodle?

:fadein: Hi all - this is a question for poodle people. Attached is a photo of my new poodle (had her two weeks, got her from a client who could no longer take care of his dogs.) She's a small miniature, and yes she's obese but losing weight fast. Anyway, I'm having a hard time pinning down exactly what color she is. Is she apricot, red or cafe-au-lait? She's got a liver-colored nose, and amber toenails. Her ears and topknot are red-blonde but her body coat is deeper in color.

I really can't tell. It's hard to know by the shading (or lighting), but I'm guessing she's either an apricot or a brown. What's weird to me about that, though, is that I more often see the ears or "points" on those colors being darker than the rest, and not the other way around. She doesn't look much like a cafe-au-lait to me, at least not by the way my computer is presenting the photo to me. The thing is there are so many shades even among the solid colors that it's sometimes just a matter of perception. What is she registered as, or do you know?

Whatever she is, she's lovely. I see you're in Atlanta. I'm in southern GA. Do you ever go to the Atlanta Pet Fair? It's where I usually go to get my Poodle fix (like I don't have them at home... I have two Standards and a Toy). 8)

Hi Horsefeathers -

Taking into consideration the color variations on computer monitors, the whole thing with the shading is part of what is throwing me as well. Also, apricots are supposed to have black noses and nails (I'm told), and this girl has a liver nose and amber nails. Her former owner called her a "red" which I can't see, really. He didn't have - or wouldn't give me - her papers, and I don't even know what her registered name is. Oh well - she's pretty, whatever she is -

and yes, I do go to the Atlanta Pet Fair! and I hope to compete in the first-timers' class next year. Actually, I hope to compete with this little girl - she's fantastic for grooming, has nice thick fluffy hair, and she only needs to lose some weight and learn to stack. That's do-able in a years' time I think!

Apricots can have lighter noses, eyes and such; it is allowable, but just not desirable. So it brings me back to... not knowing, lol.

We may be competing against each other next year at APF! Every year, I say I'm going to compete in the first timers,' but then I always think I'm not ready yet and that I need to study it just a little bit more (basically chicken out). If I do, it will likely be with one of my Standards. I thought about competing with my Toy, too, but she's not built very well and I hate to go into competition having to do a lot of corrective grooming and camouflaging for my first attempt at competing. I dunno... then again, they say the judges take into consideration the degree of difficulty.

Your little dog looks like she'd be a great competition dog. She has the opposite problem as my Standard when she stacks... I see she roaches her back. My Standard, left to stand on his own, dips his back like he's sway-backed and wants to stand cow-hocked. He's a gorgeous dog who just stands "lazy" like an old broken down mule. Silly dog.

Are you a professional groomer, HF?

I was a graphic designer for years and decided to quit and learn to groom about a year ago. At this past APF I entered the Oster Career Start comp with a cute chubby schnauzer, didn't place but had a great time and got a taste of what it's like to groom with a hundred people watching you.

Next year for the first timers' I do hope to use my new little poodle - she does roach her back but I'm starting to work on her stacking now. If for some reason I can't use her, there are a couple of other minipoos and bichons belonging to clients that I should be able to use. For the large non-sporting there's a fantastic light cream std poodle whose owner keeps in great shape and he's wonderful for grooming. We have a deal with her that this fall she'll let his coat grow out, and we'll groom him for free for a few months so we can put him in a Dutch clip for practice. I don't doubt she'd let me use him for competition - she's one of those rare owners who digs the cool poodle clips and she's rightly proud of her handsome boy.

I want to compete less to win than to have fun and to work on targeted grooming skills. It was fascinating watching the contestants this year. They got some mad scissoring skillz. ;)

I say she is a red. And how lucky you are. How old is she? She to me seems to be maybe 6ish. If so her color has really stayed well. Apricot is more of an orangy tint. Tell me more. If she is older as I said she was probably even darker than she is now. If young than I'd say apricot and will lighten. The podles usually lighten with age. If she's older and born red, she was alot darker when younger I'd say. But she has alot of good color now. I have two poodles, my pup has some light apricot colorings but is considered a cream. Here are some pictures I just happened to take yesterday of her day of grooming, I hope. Lets see.

Here she is prebath,

I know not perfection, but she's not too bad.

  • 4 weeks later...

I agree, Mine is a cream color. Even though one can have some apricot color on it its still considered cream. Sure they can and do get fat, if you over feed them. Don't give into them with their begging. If you are giving a high quality kibble, more than likeley you will need to cut back. When I had bought Innova brand kibble, I fed the recommended amount and she gained. So I cut back.
